Ok I am a mexican and I don't think I want to live in Japan nor am I an anime nut.But...
There is an amazing course of japanese online on youtube by a person that lives there and it really is an amazing opportunity. Do you think it is worth it?

If you're never going to use it what's the point in learning it? Use the time to study a language you can actually use or one that ties into your own language (one of the romance language) to gain a better understanding of your own.

Learn latin, spanish, chinese etc that are more wide spread. I love Japan and want to return after spending a week there but I wouldn't learn a language I'm not going to use long term. Maybe trial a few lessons and see how you feel about it. The main thing about the other languages I mention is if you speak chinese you can often understand many other dialects, japanese included. If you speak latin you can understand spanish or italian etc. So maybe learn something more usual if you're going to invest in a second language.
Posted by: Grammar_PoIice Foreigners will sometimes create accounts on sites just to spam or advertise.
I doubt that is the main reason if anything I imagine it is so you can't say things that are against the rules without the mods knowing.

I'd do it. Heck, I was bored for a couple weeks so I learned Russian. I'm nowhere near fluent, but I understand it pretty well, can read and write in it, and speak enough to get by.
Posted by: What Is This1
Posted by: Bryanesie I never said that didn't I? Being able to watch all Japanese anime or manga is a plus, but it shouldn't be your primary reason as to learning the language. I've seen most people do this in both my Japanese classes only to end up failing halfway through, because they don't have a drive other than that.
Meh you really don't need a drive to learn a language, but I see your point.
You can learn a language sure, but putting that skill to use is a whole other thing. And in a sense you're right; you really don't need a drive to learn a language. A great example would be I took four years of French in high school, went to France, and after that never used it again. I honestly remember nothing from it. I think a lot of people go through the motions of learning a language, but never really use it to any great extent. Which really, is quite said. I'm actually finding out more and more job opportunities are readily going to be available to me once I graduate with a Bachelors in Japanese. Teaching, translating, business opportunities, government work. It's pretty open in terms of where I want to go. Hell, my advisor was trying to steer me towards applying for a position working for the CIA simply because of having that fluency in another language. So granted, I have a drive to learn the language, since I want to live in Japan. However learning the language and being fully prepared to use it, also provides a lot of opportunities for me once I graduate. And honestly it's the same with anyone willing to learn the language, and build a career around using it.

-
Posted by: Teh_Zoid Usually if you're learning the language of your own free will, you do.
What exactly do you mean? You can pass language classes without really caring much about the language. As for something like by yourself in your own free time I agree.
Posted by: BestSpartan117 Ok I am a mexican and I don't think I want to live in Japan nor am I an anime nut.But...
No. Just because something is free doesn't mean it's worth your time. In your case the fact you're probably never going to go there means it isn't worth your time. I wouldn't learn Japanese just because I like Kurosawa, subtitles are good enough for me.
