• When I was a senior in high school, some girl in my Chem II class asked if a platypus could perform photosynthesis. My teacher was so shocked that she didn't even answer her. So I told her no because they do not have chloroplasts. About five minutes goes by and the same girl blurts out, "You guys are screwing with me. A platypus can do photosynthesis. Chloroplasts make things green. Well, there's a green platypus on TV." My teacher then grabbed a brown paper bag, cut holes in it for eyes, wrote Bag of Shame on it, and made her wear it for the rest of the class. Keep in mind this was just one of many outbursts like that. This girl is now going to medical school. Oh my.

 •
Posted by: Twisted Balls Chernobyl was taught to me in my physics class. And that was just for fun. Titanic was probably mentioned once in my American History class and it was off subject.
That still doesn't disprove my point the OP's examples are not relevant to the topic.

The Chernobyl disaster is only known by most younger people because of the disaster in Japan. •
Posted by: Dark Elation Duh, that is what he is saying. The majority don't know this, that is why the education system is a fail. My school taught every single nuclear disaster in history. Well before Fukushima. We also learned about the Titanic as it was a historical event. Besides, the educational system does suck. Trying to defend it is useless. If it didn't the United States would be higher in Math and Science among the world rankings.
Each school only has so much time to teach a certain amount of material. That is why a lot of schools teach some things while others do not. The only real difference in that is AP courses in which there is a list given regarding material covered on the exam. Even then all that material might not be covered because of time. As for our standings compared to other countries that really only applies to schooling before college. Though the OP has not made this thread to talk about the education system he made it to insult people over knowledge he views that everyone should know. That is something I don't promote and will call out since this isn't a place to insult others.

But still tho
Titanic is a meaningless historical event. If a history teacher actually wastes time to talk about it, they shouldn't be teaching history.

But still tho
I never said anything about myself. I am just inputting my observation. This thread is obviously about you insulting people's lack of general knowledge not about the education system. Though since you decided to talk about me I will give you a word of advice. You shouldn't insult others when your spelling and grammar is poor it makes you look like a hypocrite. [Edited on 08.10.2012 7:40 PM PDT]

 • The fact that college tuition rises more each year due to greed rather than educating kids. So glad I got my degree and no longer have to worry about becoming a slave to loans, debt, and a degree that may not get you the job you wanted.

 • In middle school, a girl in one of my classes decided to ask the question: "Was Hitler bad?" This past year a different girl asked something along the lines of: "Why can't America just become a capitalistic country instead of a communistic one and why we couldn't just erase the national debt?" -That was all in one breath

 • The first time I read the Flood. I was scarred horribly from that event. Doctor says I may never get all the way better again. In all seriousness, I don't know. I have had such little faith in my peers since such a little age. It's ridiculous. One example. The teacher asked a dude, why are late? The guy was off his ass on some particular substances. We all knew this from the slur and the fact that HE TOLD THE TEACHER HE WAS GETTING HIGH IN THE RESTROOM IN THE SCHOOL. And the teacher didn't do a damn thing about it. Their's a reason I decided to go to college two years early. My highschool was full of idiots.
