First I've heard of this.
Thoughts? Will you be participating...? Will it flop or be awesome?
As a side note, I was totally not surprised Rage Against the Machine is going to be tagging along:
Planned events include New York's "Occupy Guitarmy," in which Rage Against the Machine's Tom Morello will lead musicians from midtown's Bryant Park to downtown's Union Square
As another side note, I wish I had tomorrow off. Lucky Europeans.
EDIT: Its May Day!. Protest time.
Posted by: Lloyd Blankfein
Posted by: CamCamm There are at least 100 protesters outside of my boyfriend's work right now.
Where does he work out of curiosity? I know you're in upstate NY aren't you?
He's an Army recruiter and yes, I am.
Posted by: ColdEmbrace Had I heard of this sooner, I wouldn't be at work right now.
I love how the Occupy movement is so irrelevant that its own supporters don't even know that it's still going on.
-
Wait... Today? Lol, I didn't g to school because of a massive headache, hope they don't get the wrong idea...
-
Occupy a job.

Meanwhile, on Cape Cod... ...Absolutely no protests are happening.

Though one thing i believe is necessary in the education system is a way to help students smoothly transition from highschool to university, and at the same time get a career going.
-
i have stopped caring about the Occupy movement. good luck to them, but peaceful protest won't work this late in the game.
-
Well,I'm neither against them or with them,so i guess well. Good for them..?
Posted by: MadMax888
Posted by: Potato Joe
Posted by: MadMax888
Posted by: Tama
Posted by: MadMax888 The problem is that we did everything they [parents, counselors, teachers, etc] told us to do - go to school, study for your tests, get good grades, go to college, get a degree - and we'd have a bright future. Well, spoiler alert - we did well in school, went to college, and got degrees - and now we're screwed. How do we get ahead when we played by the rules?
Here's another spoiler alert: Following everything people tell you is a terrible idea. And whether you realize it or not, you're still blaming other people.
What was our option? The people that told us to do that were supposed to be trustworthy. They're advisers. That's like a doctor saying "here, take this medicine for your illness" and not trusting them with their professional diagnosis.
How about you take responsibility for your own actions. You are the one who makes your own decisions in the end, not some counselor or teacher. You were not forced to get a degree and go into debt. You made the decision to. Quit trying to find someone else to blame for your own stupid mistakes.
I didn't make any stupid mistakes. I worked two full time jobs to pay for college since I didn't get any loans, financial aid, or scholarships. High school counselors and teachers are supposed to be guides for students. If we can't trust them for their advice, who can we trust?
Yourself. The economy is a dynamic thing, containing the nation, it's people and point of time among other factors isn't easy. It's not like, "Oh, take some medicine of that cough", it's not explainable.

I won't be taking a day off for some silly occupy crap. But I will be taking a day off for Halo 4 =)
Posted by: iTz Hermione No I'm not skipping work for a silly 'movement'.
I fail to see how hundreds of thousands of people who want a less corrupt and more accurately-represented government is "silly".

I like to get paid, I like my job, I like the people at my job. No I'm not skipping work for a silly 'movement'.
Posted by: MadMax888
Posted by: Potato Joe
Posted by: MadMax888
Posted by: Potato Joe That's the thing. They are just there to provide you with their advice. You can do what you want with it. They are not forcing you to do anything. In the end, people need to take responsibility for their own actions. You can not blame anyone for any decisions you made.
So how do we make the best decisions without the guidance of professionals?
Let me first begin with saying that a guidance counselor is far from a professional, but that is a whole other topic.
Then why are they there giving students advice on post-secondary education?
You make decisions based on what you want in life. If you want to attend school for four years then you should weigh what is important to you. Do you want to take out loans? If so, then you must think about how you will pay them back. Is there work in the field you are going into? What if I don't get hired after I get my degree? These are just some examples of things you should think about. You should do what you want to do. You should think of all the outcomes and weigh the consequences with the benefits. Do your own research. You could even ask a guidance counselor, but do what you want with their advice and realize that they are there to provide cookie-cutter advice and answers.
Yes, we are ultimately responsible for our decisions; I'm not saying we're not. The problem lies in that we were told that if we did x, y, and z, we would lead a fruitful life. Upon graduation, we're faced with the harsh reality that is quite the contrary to what we were told.
I agree with you there. These kids are taught in school that they can get a degree and be set for the rest of their lives. This is not true and students should be told about the consequences of different choices like I said earlier. They need to be taught that it is ultimately their decision and that they will have to take responsibility for it. The counselors should also let them know that what they say is not best for everyone. They are there to provide the cookie-cutter advice to everyone. [Edited on 04.30.2012 4:07 PM PDT]
