Should our signatures be in a more noticeable area?

I was reading the post of another thread, and it made me think how much I [i]don't[/i] use the drop down to read other user's signatures. I feel like we could incorporate them in a more noticeable area, though I'm not a designer by any degree. Where would you put it, if you had to change it? Edit: reading through the post, I'm getting the feeling that people here really don't like sigs at all. Would you mind having them removed from any post, and only found on a user's profile page? • Most of the signatures aren't that exciting anyways... theyd just be a waste of space.

  • [quote][b]Posted by:[/b] dazarobbo There's an interesting article Jeff Atwood [url=http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/2011/10/the-gamification.html]posted[/url] about actual content on web pages. It's a good read if you're interested and definitely related to this.[/quote] The examples at the start of the article are exactly what I don't want to have happen, the whole clutter of signatures and such. I just feel like on B.net, signatures have no real purpose, so is there a way to give them a reason, or should we discard them overall?

  • I'd be okay with a one-line signature separated from the main post with a horizontal separator. No BBCode in that line, so you could put in your name (e.g. Arby) or a short one-liner. It could go next to the timestamp so the overall length of the page isn't increased just by the addition of the signature. [Edited on 04.27.2012 8:42 AM PDT]

  • [quote][b]Posted by:[/b] xReconAssassinX I like them how they are, however, the drop-down arrow could be elaborated a bit more.[/quote] I think the arrow should be removed and the Title Bar should turn into a button which serves the same purpose as the arrow (No changes to the appearance of the bar, Just a function added to it). Not a huge change, But it would make it [i]that[/i] much easier to see the signature.

  • I would keep it where it's at; it's noticeable enough.

  • [quote][b]Posted by:[/b] R3ACTlON It doesn't do anything for me or anyone else, so no.[/quote] This, I don't give a damn about anybody else's signature, what I care is to read a nice thread.

  • It would be nice if it was only like, a line or two but when people have those silly banners or stories as their 'signature', then it gets a bit annoying. So I would like it in small doses is basically what I'm saying.

  • I've been here for nearly five years and I've never noticed that drop down button until now. OT: I really don't like signatures that much. They're not usually very interesting and sometimes slightly crude or lengthy.

  • My memory may be a bit fuzzy, but I think signatures used to be at the bottom of every post back in 2005 (like I said, I [i]think[/i]) until it was swapped out for the current set up.

  • I don't think sigs are any more necessary than people 'signing' their posts. I actually find that to be totally egotistical and self serving. Other forums I see where people have custom signatures that have a grocery list of all things that make them [i]'special'[/i], I find very annoying. How you post should be your 'signature'. That's what people recognize about you anyhow. [Edited on 04.27.2012 4:59 AM PDT]

  • Oh my gosh. I forgot that we actually had signatures.... I would rather they place our sigs right below our post but should give a maximum height so it wouldn't take up much room. It would look really cluttered if people had GIGANTIC sigs. That's what I like about the Bungie forums. It looks really clean and simple.

  • How about re-purposing (by that, I mean more characters) the location of the current signatures into an "About Me" section?

  • How would that even work as you're scrolling down past all those users? [quote][b]Posted by:[/b] gnome13 [quote][b]Posted by:[/b] xNUMBERx1xGUNx [quote][b]Posted by:[/b] gnome13 Why not to the right of posts where all that wasted space is?[/quote] You mean this wasted space ---->[/quote]The one with the ad and the redundant "Forum Topics link" and the other two buttons that could easily be put just above the OP. They could even make the text in the sigs a little darker so as not to distract from the thread so much.[/quote]

Most people know where it is for the most part. And the few that don't, well, they aren't missing out. I've found signatures at the bottoms of posts work on sites where the traffic is high. Then again, most signatures were banners that users felt best "expressed" them. On a site like this, though, no. Please, no.[/quote] I mean, it's not really a big deal. Just nobody knows what to expect when they hit that un-labled arrow.

  • [quote][b]Posted by:[/b] edableshoe [quote][b]Posted by:[/b] CrazzySnipe55 Having them under every post would be obnoxious considering the majority of them contain advertisements for one thing or another.[/quote] So keep them hidden, or would you even venture so far as to say you would like them removed from post and to only be found on a user's profile page?[/quote]Drop down is fine, because then you're clicking it with the "risk" in your head already that there might be ads, etc. there. It's fine how it is, in my opinion.
