"On My Own"

Thanks to Cortland_Brewer, Dozen Plague and Scoopicus for being awesome. Click this link for the weapon thread. Click this link for the multiplayer thread. "On My Own" would be a first-person survival video game that has shooting and role-playing elements. It would revolve around one Raven, a war journalist who is separated from the unnamed "good guys" on a unidentified alien world. Raven is forced to survive in the jungle, conflicting with the anonymous "bad guys" and the dangerous wildlife. Nothing more than a simple civilian with a camera, Raven must learn to kill or be killed on a planet populated by monstrous animals and hostile soldiers. AI free-roam the sandbox world of On My Own, producing random encounters. The entire game would run on a single time-cell; AI would interact with each other even if the player is absent from the area. A platoon of "good guys" and a platoon of "bad guys" are out running around and they run into each other. Raven could run into a group on the eve of the attack, Raven could run into the aftermath of the fight and scavenge for weapons and supplies or Raven might even get randomly caught in a hail of gunfire and mortarfire as the two opposing forces clash around him. The game would play alot into the environment and how you would handle it; say you have to cross a canyon. You could either go down into the canyon and venture forth on foot, risking running into dangers along the way or you could try to find a "bad guy" base and steal an aerial vehicle (that'll eventually run out of fuel), pushing all potential danger into one specific encounter. The environment and world would play against you and make you rethink your strategy. Players would decide the name and gender of Raven when starting a new game. Raven would usually wear a military-grade helmet due to the safety it provides, preventing the player to remove it and see Raven's face. However, players can interchange helmets if any are found. The helmets in the game would be very Quarian-esque. The plot is kept on a need-to-know basis, leaving most players in the dark in terms of story... but going further into the storyline and completing certain sidequests, players can learn more about the universe of On My Own, explained by Raven in a self-conversation. The only available plot players can make out at first is that in the untold future, war-journalist Raven is riding with several "good guy" marines on a "good guy" helicopter, high above the jungles of an anonymous planet. The helicopter is then shot down by the "bad guys". During the crash, the corpse of a large soldier lands on Raven, knocking out the journalist's breath; then the "bad guys" show up, everyone seems dead and moves on. Later, Raven awakens, forces the dead man off and starts walking. This planet is vast and unknown to Raven and the "enemy" aren't the only predators... Raven's only hope is move through the jungle and find a way back to "friendly" ground. - - - - - - - Gameplay would be about survival. Platforming, patience, using the senses, and attacking are key to the formula. Raven starts out as weak but by the end of the game, Raven'll be little more than an equal to an actual soldier. Raven wasn't a soldier secretly before... Raven is just a citizen down inside. Extreme actions like running, climbing or jumping would drain stamina; health is shown as red (but not bloody) vision. Sound, vision would be key to surviving. Rocks and sticks can be picked up; any branch or nook can be scaled; any plant and hunk of meat can be eaten. Diseases can be caught, wounds can be infected. Night and day would change how you would play; brightness cannot be adjusted (see below). While the game would have guns, it wouldn't revolve around gunfights. In fact, rifles and ammunition would be treasured weapons that would be risky -but very useful- to acquire. Most weapons would be simple branches, rocks, stones that you picked up from the ground. Experience wouldn't be earned through just killing animals or completing tasks; actually, experience would be earned from doing just about anything. Merely existing would increase into your experience pool, albeit slowly. Eating new things, using a certain weapon more, discovering a new animal, finding your bearings atop of a tree, all these kind of things would coin the player experience. Experience could be distributed into skills and talents which can be accessed by the pause menu. Like the other options at said menu, the Skills Menu can be pulled up by the player. These talents would provide little but can help in the long run; one would increase how well you can see in the dark, one can increase your resistance to disease while another can pull up relevant tips and notes when you hover your cursor over an object. Skills would be classified into different trees. Each skill would help benefit you and nothing would be useless. - - - - - - - One more thing. There would be a special story-plot that revolves a secret third-party in On My Own; the members of 'faction' would watch over Raven as the journalist advances in the campaign. These anonymous fellows are only active at night, are pitch-black and possess neon-green eyes. Only some hints are available beyond sight (these guys run away when seen and are impossible to track), completing certain sidequests can reveal more on these mysterious stalkers. - - - - - - - Share your opinion. •
Posted by: Ronaldinho 2010 -blam!- epic man! are you actually planning on making this game? idea here; how about you can gather like virtually anything from the environment and create anything you want? Like crafting almost instead you get a bendable branch, some stringy vine and a sharp stick with a rock and turn it into a bow and arrow? just and example maybe you can create anything even something more passive like camouflage.
I wish I had the skills but I still got time to learn.

 •
Posted by: Dragonzzilla
Posted by: thegreekboy250 Great idea....in theory. You would never be able to make this unless you had a gazillion dollar budget and had a huge team of the best game designers imaginable.
Most likely. Alot of things are great in theory.
That... or 20 guys using UDK... and 10 years.

 • I agree whole-heartedly, but I would enjoy two "evil" factions vying for control over the mass of land, as opposed to a "good and evil" theme. That would make the hunting and survival more intense.

 •
Posted by: Dragonzzilla
Posted by: Scoopicus
Posted by: Dragonzzilla Should there be MP?
Perhaps something like Journey's MP system could be initiated. Like, at random times, other players may just drop into your game without realizing it themselves. Neither of you can voice communicate with each other, but have to find alternative means of doing so. Implementing hand gestures and such into the game comes to mind. From there, you decide what to do. You can ignore the other player, try to kill them and/or take their supplies, or cooperate with them to some end.
Liken to Dark Souls or whatever? Perhaps. But I'm thinking the multiplayer shouldn't be involved in the single-player.
Not really. More like Journey for the PS3, where neither character can voice communicate with each other.

 • Hooray! You acknowledged Raven and you put my name in the OP! Thank you for recognizing it :) Also, I love the Stalkers idea. It would be cool if at most parts during the night in the game, you could see neon green eyes in the shadow, and staring at them for too long/ walking towards them causes the eyes to move and disappear(there is no actual mob, just an animation of a silhouetted head. Will these people have cloaks? I was thinking something like so. Except without so many weapons, spikes, or much thickness. As you can tell by my big WoW craze, I love using their ideas. I'm not sure if I understood you, but if this is an entirely new planet, something like the Old Gods could be placed. The Old Gods are known to corrupt the most important characters in the game (some) only by whispering to them. You fight Yog Saron (1,000 mouths) and C'Thun's eye. It would be cool if you could sort of make their appearance blend into some terrain. Something to massive that you would only notice an arm from far away, for example. These things whisper to Raven in very rare occasions, with an increase at night. The Old Gods say things such as: "Don't move, don't breathe, it's right behind you." "They will abandon you in the end" "Only death is eternal" Stuff like that.

 •
Posted by: Dragonzzilla
Posted by: MadSpooning Sounds pretty good to me. Character though should remain anonymous in my opinion. The players could put themselves in the the game rather then playing a predetermined character. A little role-playing can make a big difference.
Uh-uh.
Good? Bad? By anonymous, I mean faceless, not user generated.
