The Feasability of The Mech-A Work in Progress Essay

I am Writeing a Short Essay about the Feasability of the Mech.Right now i have goten the First 2 Parts of it done and i would like to know what the Flood thingks of it and give me some suggjestions and opinions on it.
The Feasability of the "Mech" Foreword This Document is to study and to bring to light any possible usefull Aplications of a "Mech" in reality. This document will bring up several Topics includeing "The Mech in general" "Potential uses and applications of a Mech" and "Limitations and benefits of the Mech Compaired to Wheeled or tracked Vehicle's".Please also note the mech is mainly a Science Fiction device however many time's Science Fiction become's Science Fact. Also keep in mind that the Person Writeing this report is entitled to insert joke's at any time he feels compelled to do so.Now on to the First Chapter. Chapter 1 The Mech in general. The Mech,A Word that Conjurs up image's of gigantic robots dukeing it out in futureistic Battlegrounds useing Fantastic weaponry,But for Clarity i will Classify What a Mech is.First to be considerd a "Mech" it must at least A:Use "Legs" as its main form of Transport,And B:Be driven by a Human inside a Cockpit on the Device. The Line Between Mech and Mobile Armor is a Fluid one,For Clarity Power Armor is usualy a Exoskeleton that the User "Wear's" as opposed to the cockpit of a Mech.Power Armor is usualy portrayed as augmenting the user's ability's and enhanceing there survivability in harsh enviroments. The Mech is often portrayed in Science Fiction as a Walking War Machine and to lesser Degry a Construction and logistical device. For the most part they are right on those Aplications(i will Further Eleborate in later Chapter's).the Portrail of Mech's can be divided into two Catagory's Eastern and Western. The Eastern Mech is most often Portrayed in Anime or Manga.Eastern Mech's tend to be more humanoid in shape with sleeker designs, opposable thumbs and kung fu grip. The most Popular Eastern mech/s can be seen in the multiple Gundum Series. These mechs often are capable of Dificult Arobatic Manuver's and most often are piloted by prepubecent teenage boys and the occasional Busty Female suppourting charechter with a overly annoyingly skweaky voice. So it is safe to say Eastern Mechs are not Placed in reality but gosh darn dont they look cool. On the other Side of the Coin are Western Mechs wich tend to be more rugged than Eastern Mechs.A common Theme of Western Mechs is that the Mechs themselves are unweildy Leviathins wich if thrown to the ground would have trouble geting up.Also most Western Mechs have Ditched Arms and opposable Thumbs for Permanantly Fixed Weapons Platforms. It is Safe to say that Western Mechs are more Rooted in Reality than Eastern mech's.A Good example of the Generic Western Mech is the Battletech Series of Boardgame/books/vidiogame's. • I can actually picture the world using mechs eventually, especially after playing the mechwarrior series. As the essay said, western mechs seem more implemented into the real world.

 •
Posted by: MinkOWar By "Exosing itself to fire from below," I meant that the mech would be straddling building of which It has no idea of the contents.
Ah yes well like i said in there a mech would be more defensive than anything else in a combat role.Thogh you are right it would be more of a firemagnet than anything else on a battlefeild. But you never know what kind of materals we will enegeneir. And yea Spelling aint my strong suit... • I think the next thing the military should focus on is the human mind and nano technology. (they are working with nano tech as I type) Imagine the possibilities nano technology will have in store for us! Unfortunately, not all of the possibilities are good... I remember seeing a special on the Discovery channel about the "top ten next military achievements" or something along the lines. Number one was this nano suit able to be like a bullet proof vest (yet it was light and like a regular shirt), self medic (if you were poisoned or something, an antidote (if in the suit) would be administered to you immediately), and a whole bunch of other things. The funny thing was that they looked very similar to the ODST. lol. also, they had a demonstration of what the nano tech armor would do if the wearer was hit by a .50cal sniper. It was all CG. It showed the bullet hit the armor, and all of the nano machines absorbing the power of the bullet, not letting it penetrate. The guy wearing the armor was knocked back and in pain (the guys pain was actually shown, lol), but that little bit of nano armor was able to stop a .50cal sniper bullet from penetrating skin! Now that is amazing. Did anyone else see that show? I'd like to see that again. lol

 • Yes it would havea better use in a urban situation that is what i am saying.Plus i am not saying that the Mech Cant See Below it,that would be just silly wouldent it.However you Bring up a good point.Mechs would be Relegated to more peacefull tasks other than the one's i have listed i should put them on there. Also the essay is meant to spark discussion on the subject. • Personally, I think mechs are pretty cool in books and video games, but I don't see a practical need to develope mechs. What advantages do mechs have over tanks? Mechs are both more fragile and less mobile. Sure, they are better suited to very rough terrain, but that advantage cannot make up for its other handicapps. Mechs are slow, meandering giants found only in vertual reality, not the real world.

 • One problem, Tracked or wheeled vehicles will always be able to carry heavier armor and weapons, not having to support the weight on legs. The only time it might be true that a mech would mount heavier weapons would be in an urban situation, where the mech may straddle several buildings (of restricted height) while the Tanks would need to be small enough to traverse the streets. This would seriously expose the mech to fire from below though, and it would have to make its way very carefully. A "mech" might be practical for fighting Forest fires, construction, and infantry manouvers, though. In a flood zone, though, helicopters and boats are usually better. The Mech can't see what it's stepping on, and is thus far more prone to needing rescue itself. [Edited on 9/7/2005]

 • I love the idea of having mechs, but it doesn't seem practical. I believe we really have everything we need. We've got jets and bombers for the sky, we've got boats, subs and gunships on water, and we've got ground troops, tanks, and other vehicles on the ground. If we did find use for mechs, it would be incredibly expensive for the equipment needed to make an effective mech for battle. If a mech were to be used in battle, it wouldn't really be able to work in harsh envirenments either. If it's trying to climb over a mountain, balance would be lost and the mech would tumble. Expensive equipment would need to be applied to the mech in order to keep balance. The legs would be able to maintain some balance, but really only on somewhat stable ground. Mechs just don't seem like they'll ever come to pass. I know that there are people trying to make mechs as I type, but only for their own purposes.

 • Allright here is the Second Part of my essay
Chapter 2 Practical Design and Implementation of a "Mech". The Practical Design of a working Mech would have to Acomplish 3 Things,First it would Have to Get the mech Upright on its Legs.Second it would have to keep the Body Stable while Walking and manuvering,And Lastly be able to carry either Munitions or Construction equipment on the Body. To Acomplish these thingswe Must Consider several Factor's.First How Do We attach the Body in a way that will allow the Legs to suppourt it.Then We need to figure out a way to keep the Body from falling off the Mech or Colapsing. And third we must figure out a way to mount external objects on the mech without Upseting the Legs suppourting it or throwing the mech offbalance. Now Considering these i sugjest that there be Four Legs other than the Traditional 2,Simply because logicly it is easyer to mount and suppourt a body and still be stable with Four Legs rather than 2.The Movement of the Legs could be Achived throgh Hydraulics and computer assisted controls. The Body of the mech wouldbe more like a metal Slab than most would thing. This design would be easyer to mount onto four legs and still be Stable.now to be of any use it would be around 2 or 3 Storys in hight,Any higher and stability would be sacrificed any lower and the legs would never be able to suppourt the immense weight and still Move. Now for Implementation.Mechs would only be practical in either A:Moveing in Area's where Wheeled or Tracked Vehicle's would have Trouble traversing or are impassible,Or B:Mounting Weapons and Equipment that would be To Large or Unweildy for a Wheeled or Tracked Vehicle to mount.Keeping this in mind i see a few practicaluses for a Mech.First the Peacefull Aplications,A Mech could be used for rescue Operations in area's affected by Flooding,It could Also serve as a mobile Hospital or Refugie Camp during emergency's. Secondly are the Military Aplications,First it would make a Wounderful Mobile Defence Bunker being able to absorb all small arms fire and haveing a Elevated Position make it exelent for feilding a mobile Defensive Platform,It could also serve as a large Artilery Peice in area's where normal Guns cant be taken. It Can also serve as a Mobile Command Area on the Battlefeild.Defence From Aircraft Can Be provided from mountable Anti Aircraft guns.
[Edited on 9/7/2005]

 • Anti aircraft guns get better by the day, and you could have microwave beam that could fry electronics(currently possible).

 •
Posted by: MinkOWar Haven't read all of it, just adding my opinion of Mech's. While cool, and manouverable over rough terrain, they would never serve as an uber weapon like the Battle-tech mechs, tanks would be far more powerful, and faster over level ground. The mech's legs would be a severe weak-point, while a tank, contrary to the Battle-tech ideal, would be able to mount much heavier armor, and be much more stable under fire, with fewer weak-points. Of course, aircraft at this tech level would pwn both of them from orbit, rendering ground combat on a large scale moot.
Yes i Agry Aircraft would be More effective in a totaly war but i disagry that they will reneder ground combar Moot.Firstly True you can Blow Enemy Positions to Oblivion Twelve Time's over but if you want to capture a City Indescriminant Bombings would cripple the Infostructure you would like to use Later makeing groundcombat in City's still prevelant. The Mech has a combat neich that could be looked into and could be a viable military Vehicle. The Second Part of my essay looks into the Practical Desingn and Implementation fo Mechs and it is Almost done...
