I'm running for president of the world

The world is -blam!- up right now. I'm running on a platform of wide spread human rights. People have control over their bodies, and they're allowed to do anything they want, as long as it doesn't infringe upon the rights of others. Violators will be rehabilitated, not punished. There will be various world subdivisions, some based on certain religions/cultures/ideologies to reduce the temptation of hate crimes. So what do you think? Where should I start my campaign?

 • Actually N00B, hunger also causes stealing. And napster, to think that anyone who is not a Republican is a Democrat is really stupid.

 • If we have some free daily snacks and drinks, I'm in. You've brought up some hot debates in your time and, albeit they were controversial, there were a lot of important messages in them.

 •
Posted by: Precursors
Posted by: peoples champ36 Wouldn't you say that it's our ability to cooperate and transcend greed at times and show compassion that makes us human and the dominant complex species on the planet?
That would be an example of using your mind to get a better longer term gain rather than a smaller short term gain. You join together with others so that you can accomplish your goal, whatever it may be. The biggest problems with greed comes from when people don't think ahead enough, its generally easier to cooperate, and help others in the short term so that they'll help you in the long term. Even showing showing compassion isn't necessarily a nongreedy thing to do, perhaps you simply crave the feeling you get from doing something you deem morally good (yes I ascribe to the notion that no action is entirely selfless) or maybe you think you'll get something else later. Greed, in the sense that it means rapacious desire is far more desirable than laziness and docility.
I see. That's a nice definition of greed. I would call it rationality, but your thing works too.
Nope the desire to better yourself and the people you care about is good but greed is bad.
"greed -- for lack of a better word -- is good. Greed is right. Greed works. Greed clarifies, cuts through, and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit. Greed, in all of its forms -- greed for life, for money, for love, knowledge -- has marked the upward surge of mankind."- Full quote. Greed does not just mean wealth, it is an excessive or rapacious desire. So you really could be greedy for anything, including the betterment of yourself. You just have to have sufficient desire and frankly I don't believe in doing anything halfheartedly. If greed is so good then why are there laws against it? Why is it viewed as a bad thing?

 •
Posted by: NAKED N00B 14 It is possible to know what isn't something without knowing what that thing is. I don't know how a nuclear reactor works, but I can tell you it isn't a cow's digestive system. Obviously we all have our different ideas of a perfect society. It is subjective. All politics are is a way to associate yourself with people who have the most similar ways of thinking and achieving a perfect society. Personally, I don't think my idea of a perfect society is attainable because I believe humans are naturally flawed. My idea of a perfect world is one where these imperfections' influence was minimized. And as president of the world, I will push this on everyone.
But you know enough about nuclear reactors and cows to tell the difference. If perfection doesn't exist, you can't claim to know what it is. Abstract ideas are different from actual things. The problem with politics is that you can't predict human behavior. Until a mathematics of human behavior is developed, you'll never be able to create a 'perfect' society, you can't even understand what one would look like. **Just to clarify, I'm point out that you are attributing a qualitative judgment to humanity that is otherwise not present. You can't assume that your interpretation of humans is such that we are missing something that would otherwise make us perfect. We are neither perfect nor not perfect. Rather we just are. That being said you cannot organize us until you can predict our behavior perfectly which will allow you to draw qualitative or normative judgments from our daily activities. That's where social science breaks down. [Edited on 10.12.2009 12:43 PM PDT]

 •
Posted by: napster851 Most of your post tend to lead toward the left and you constantly insult republicans and their leaders. You're a democrat.
I won't deny I am a liberal, but that is not synonymous with democrats. And I don't necessarily dislike people just because of their political party. I thought Bush was not a good president. I don't think Reagan was a good president. However, there are democratic presidents that I don't agree with as well. I actually like Richard Nixon's policies. I think Carter was a tool. You should not evaluate a person or politician simply by their party affiliation.

 •
Posted by: peoples champ36
Posted by: NAKED N00B 14 It isn't just my theory. Many have thought this way before I. Some would go as far to argue there is no selfless act, but I'm undecided on that. It is possible to be a smart individual. A generous individual. A caring individual. But people as a whole are cold, greedy, and selfish.
Many have been wrong as well. You can't claim to know know that people are essentially cold, greedy, or selfish. It's circular logic. To say someone is not perfect, is to imply that you know what perfection is. If we are all imperfect (actually the opposite is 'not perfect,' imperfect is something else) then we can't claim to know perfection.
