Today is D-day

51 years ago today, combined forces from America, Britain, France, and Canada made the largest amphibious landing in human history, braving machine gun fire and harsh weather on the beaches of Normandy, France. Through their brave sacrifices and herioc efforts, the face of freedom was eventually preserved throughout the world as the -blam!-s were slowly driven back into Germany and defeated. I'm very greateful to those brave men, not much older than I am, who were on the beach that day, taking place in what I consider to be one of the most important events in modern history. I dunno, I just felt like pointing it out. *note: this isn't meant to be a political thread in any way*

 • I'd appreciate it if you didn't insult the german defenders. I have a long german histroy, and by no means do I endorse the genocide committed by the SELECT FEW germans who were in tune with hitler's ideas. The rest were just men, who saw fit to defend the country that had been through so much. Remember - most of the German army wanted Hitler dead. When you insult someone for being german you are just as bad as Himmler or Hitler himself. They were merely carrying out orders - not desperately trying to slaughter as many Americans as possible and get pleasure out of it. You have been watching too many biased American WW2 movies. The german soldiers were not just faceless cannon fodder. They were actually the most skilled and organised army at the time - but were short of allies. They had very organised and deadly panzer divisions and extremely skilled paratroopers that could take a fortified town in 2 days. Please do not look down on the -blam!- soldiers because they were german. They were merely men following orders. Do you think that my 56 year old great grandfather wanted to carry around a panzerfaust in the last few weeks ofthe war and get shot in his kneecaps by a group of Russians after surrenderig? Think before you accuse.

 • My grandfather was in the 502nd PIR Dog company. He survived France and fought in the Battle of the Bulge at Melville. He was captured by the German Infantry on december 23rd and then spent 98 days in a boxcar, being starved, tortured and forced to live in a boxcar that housed over 80 bodies -most of them his friends. He was only one of 27 men that made it out alive (out of several hundred that were held there) and he received two bronze stars, four purple hearts, a silver star and many other medals that I don't even know what they are, but he developed Parkinsons' disease and a rather bad disorder known as PTSD. This is but one story of the dedication and courage that began that day and ended long after that longest of days. I thank them all and our gratitude only scratches the surface of what they truly deserve. Semper Fi

 • lets remember those of that day, and also those of other wars and battles. and also, many games may not be accurate pictures of the battles, but they do have the same basic facts straight (day, weather, general palcement of defenses, etc;). And many world war II games are extrememelly close to the actual occurances, witha few slight diferences.

 • Damnit, I forgot it was the sixth, damnit. You live down the street from Malarkey. SWEET! i wish i lived down the street from a WWII veteran. A moment of silence for those who lost their lives on this day to save the European people from Hitler's tyranny. ....................................................................... ....................................................................... ....................................................................... ....................................................................... ....................................................................... ....................................................................... ....................................................................... ....................................................................... ....................................................................... ....................................................................... ....................................................................... ...........................rest in peace. • It's ironic how a tribute thread to soldiers who fought and died in WW2 has resorted to members fighting amongst themselves....

 • Such a sad thread, we can't even pay tribute without making it a personal flame war about superiority. Oh well.
ALSO it waasnt HARSH WEATHER...they waited till it WASNT bad...so i am gonna suggest you dont do a history lessen again.
So you're saying that 4-foot swells, rain, and strong winds aren't bad weather? I hate to break it to ya, but when you're fighting in those conditions, it becomes harsh weather. I'm gonna suggest you shut up and actually bother to learn what you're talking about. Also, take some spelling lessons while you're at it.
All too right. *Some* WW2 games are a good tribute to the men that went off to war and died for our freedom, but they are far from the real dipiction of war or, dare I say, historical references. Personally, I've read several books on WW2 including: Citizen Soldiers by Stephen E. Ambrose, On to Berlin by General Gavin, and I've just begun the Band of Brothers. Read up, learn, and become less ignorant than you already are. And trust me, "you already are."

 •
Posted by: Grindstone 61 years ago is correct. I started reading Band of Brothers last night. Incredible. I had it signed by Don Malarkey (lives down the street) and by Lynn "Buck" Compton, two surviving members of the 101st Airborne division. They are both great men. Don Malarkey's comments in the book inspired the movie Saving Private Ryan. Anyway, if not for them and the millions of others who served during that time, this would be a different world. 300,000 Americans perished in that war (sorry, not sure about the other countries loses, but they were high as well). In the US, they are dying off at 1,500 a day. Be sure to thank them.
BoB was a book?!?!?!?! i must get my hands on that. and yea, love and respect to those who fought for us. • I have met Buck Compton. He is a really good man. If you have the book, Band of Brothers, Don Malarkey has said that it is nearly accurate in every detail. But S. Ambrose did slander him a bit, but that is becuase he and Don got into a huge argument over politics (Don, a staunch repub, and Ambrose a flaming liberal), which is why there is no synopsis of Don in the back of the book, nor at the end of the series, even though he served more consecutive days in battle than any other member of the 101st. Don and Buck Compton are still best friends to this day. The visit each other about once a month or so.

Geez. Band of Brothers is one of my favourite books of all time, if you haven't guessed. My favourite part is when they find Hitler's staff car and test if the windows are bullet-proof. I recently saw the series as well. It's incredible. [Edited on 6/6/2005]

 • I thought it was June 4th... Oh well. It frustrates me how people speak out against war and don't appreciate the sacrifices our armed forces make to ensure our freedom and saftey. I've been playing Call of Duty today and there are some deep quotes in there. "The soldier above all others prays for peace, for it is the soldier who must suffer and bear the deepest wounds and scars of war." - General Douglas MacArthur "War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature, and has no chance of being free unless made or kept so by the exertions of better men than himself." - John Stuart Mill "All that is necessary for evil to succeed is for good men to do nothing." - Edmund Burke, British statesman and philosopher "You know the real meaning of peace only if you have been through the war." - Kosovar "Those who have long enjoyed such privileges as we enjoy forget in time that men have died to win them." - Franklin D. Roosevelt

 • we should all give a moment of silence for all the lives lost during the war......D- day one of the biggest invations ever....if you want to watch a long but great movie i suggest The Longest Day.....but if you want to watch a movie with gore and legs and arms flying everywhere.....Saving Private Ryan is the way to go. i remind you that men didn't even make it out of the water before they died and they did it for their country....so please a moment of silence is needed................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................ ...............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
And I'm going to suggest the same thing to you. Conditions were FAR from ideal. The only reason they had the landings june 6th was because if they waited, the weather would be even worse and they would have to wait another month, or possibly until the next year due to the onset of winter.
