Crota 101: How to Swordbearer

Preparation 1. A Level 32 Sword Carrier with raid boots perk "Swordbearer's Touch" 2. Good amount of Agility/Movement Speed from stats/perks (Training focused on speed or +2 Agility perk) 3. Adequate experience on how to wield a Sword (Test combos and maneuvers on the Moon mission "Sword of Crota") 4. A Fireteam with Gjallahorns (For taking down Crota's Shield and/or Swordbearers) 5. A mic (Unless your Fireteam members are telepathic) 6. A Defender buddy who tags along with you on every sword run Swordplay: First Sword 1. Jump onto one of the two isolated pillars just in front of the Glass Chamber while your Fireteam takes down the Swordbearer 2. Double-jump constantly to check Swordbearer's health while holding your heavy weapon 3. Once Swordbearer is ~20% HP or less, fire your rocket and run down to collect your Sword 4. Proceed to jump up onto the rocks preceding Crota's main platform (Depends on where the Swordbearer was killed) 5. Have 1-2 people stagger (without killing) the Hive Boomers closest to where you are going to jump from 5. As you are nearing the rocks, signal to your Fireteam to have each person shoot 1 x rocket 6. Upon seeing the FIRST rocket impact Crota, that's your signal to start jumping towards him 7. The Defender buddy will follow after you and place a bubble in-between Crota and the lower rocks, then heads back 8. If all goes well, you should be ready to strike as soon as Crota's shield hits 0 9. Execute a quick succession of 3-4x Heavy attacks (3x if he kneels before you are ready, 4x if you are ready before he kneels) 10. Once you finish your salvo, dash back through the bubble to take the orbs and to take cover from Crota 11. 1-2 seconds before Crota stands, Fireteam will send another round of Gjallahorns to get him right as his shield regens 12. Dash back to Crota and perform steps 9 through 11 13. Upon the third kneel, you should have your Sword super charged up if you picked up Defender buddy's orbs 14. Use a Heavy > Super > Heavy > Heavy combo in quick succession as your final third combo 15. Get out of there ASAP and return to the Glass Chamber with your Fireteam 16. Crota should be on the right plate now, have everyone consume heavy synthesis if needed, prepare for Final Sword Swordplay: Final Sword 1. Have 1 person keep a lookout for the positions of the Swordbearer and Crota 2. Once Crota starts moving back to the center, everyone heads out and repeats Swordplay: First Sword 3. After the second kneel or so (with Crota at ~10%-15% HP left), Enrage will happen, DO NOT PANIC 4. You IMMEDIATELY stop what you are doing and retreat back down ASAP, Defender buddy will make his way to you 5. Have your Fireteam unleash EVERYTHING on Crota while ignoring the Oversoul 6. When Crota kneels, dash back up and finish the job 7. In the event you happen to die, here is where Defender buddy comes in 8. He/she picks up the Sword, and finish what you started Notes PS3 Technical Disadvantages and how to get around them After playing as the Sword Carrier for quite a bit, I noticed that the way the sword's coding is implemented in such a way that your attack speed is relative to how quickly the animation frames for a particular attack finishes. At 30fps (Destiny's frame rate cap), you are able to perform combos fluidly at the fastest possible "animation speed". When the frame rate dips below 25, I noticed that I wasn't able to chain attacks as fast as I did at 30fps. Simply put, the lower your frame rate, the less consistent you will be with outputting DPS. The third person camera you get as a Sword Carrier renders objects in the scene that are within the camera's viewing angle. Anything not within those limits are culled (see Occlusion Culling/Frustrum Culling), meaning they are not rendered to save processing power. Anything past a certain distance that are visible will be rendered, but at a lower "Level of Detail" (see LOD). In the game development world, these methods are employed as optimization techniques and in Destiny's case, to attempt to maintain the 30fps experience. The PS3 however cannot handle this well enough. To experience this yourself, load up any mission where Hive ships shoot purple projectiles at you. Zoom in and face your camera at them. You will notice a significant drop in frame rate. Now look away and it immediately bounces back up to 30. This can also be achieved from Wizard barrages. Let's now look at it from a Sword Carrier's point of view. You want to attack Crota with fast and consistent strikes per kneel, therefore you need to maintain the optimal frame rate of ~30fps. You do this by facing your camera towards the green moon when running towards Crota, making sure you face AWAY from your Fireteam and AWAY from any Hive Boomer shots. This causes culling and LOD to work for you and render LESS objects/particles/materials, thereby giving you the best frame rate for sustained DPS. Turn your camera to face Crota's hips and angle it downwards to the ground, away from projectiles or bullets.
