Crota HM - Confessions of a 31
Like many others, I was in Crota HM yesterday. With all the poo slinging and elitism, I thought I would offer some commentary for those 31's trying to figure out just how effective 31's can be.
Im a 31 Titan Defender with 2 pieces of raid gear. My load out was Mida, Saterienne Rapier, Timur's, Ice Breaker, Legendary Sniper of Uselessness, Truth, Dragon's Breath, and IR Yut heavy.
Ran with 5 32's. 3 clan mates with serious skills, and 2 fillers more than capable. I OTOH, I'm not a casual but nowhere close to 1337. I follow instructions and do exactly what I'm told.
We got through Lamps pretty quickly.
The bridge gave us a bit of a hard time but we had 2 clutch players make it happen.
Death Singer was ridiculously easy.
And at Crota's, we temporarily peed the bed. And by temporarily, let's call it hours.
First, let me say that while face down and clicking through the fire team individual camera, I witnessed some of the finest gameplay that I have ever seen. I saw more do or die, last stand, refuse to bleed out, epic kickin butt and takin names that I have ever witnessed. These guys need wheelbarrows to transport around their...... um ....... Orbs.
So what's the truth about 31's ? It really is an issue. Being one-hit is not only possible, it's probable. Heck, the 32's were going down in 2.
I was not doing enough DPS to truly add value. I was softening up some targets but my Kills were pathetic. I did add some value with the bubble and actually prevented wipes twice. (Thank you Saint-14!) But in the end, I spent virtually all my time trying to stay alive and not enough time supporting my team. I felt like a strike bounty mouse.
After a few hours and having Crota on life support multiple times, a friend of the clan that had completed came on to chat with us about strategy.
Out of respect to the fire team and more specifically my clan peeps, I offered up my spot to the 32. I did not want to be the reason that the team failed. We were so close so many times that I really felt the difference was putting Boomers down in one less shot or dropping adds a second earlier.
I am happy to report that my boys finally put Crota down! So glad. Those guys worked hard and did everything they could to help keep me alive and support me.
In the end, sure, 31's can complete Crota. But I assure you that no matter how good you are, you cannot outplay the math if you're playing with talented guys. No matter what you tell yourself, you're riding coat tails.
I'll continue to do Normal and collect my shards.
And when I'm 32, I'm going back in to HM and personally kick Crota in the cash and prizes.

If everyone has gear to help them regen health from orbs or skills they should be ok. Last night we beat it with 2 31s and so did today. Everyone has to be on the same page and not worry about using heavy ammo. Most wipes come because people want to save heavy ammo and don't down crota fast enough so the sword holder dies.

im 31 titan and ran it with 5 32s. they were dying more than me. i added a lot of bubble support when we came out to the right of the room and onto the middle. my job was to add support to the swordbearer and made sure for the boomers not to hit him and succeeded. there were never complaints that they were dying cuz of me.

3 RepliesThis makes me rethink carrying my 31 friends in Crota's End HM. A few of my friends only recently got the game, and we've carried them through VoG (hard and normal) and CE (normal) when they were 3 levels below the required. This boosted them up to 31, but their weapons are iffy at best. Assumed hard mode crota wouldn't be too bad, but now I don't know haha. Before the trolls come running, I'm LVL 32 but have my armor in the vault.

2 RepliesI prepped for hard by using all my shards for my hunter, so I could run the sword. My other characters could both be 32 but I needed that HM win with the sword just to say I did it ya know... needless to say it is all the team, I beat it as a sniper support the first night on my cousin's 32. Last night I slammed Crota with the sword myself! If everyone isn't into it, you WILL FAIL! Be a 32 and do your part, it will create way less problems and useless rage.

I ran it with 2 level 31s using middle platform strategy. Wasnt that hard if everyone has the right guns. The 31s I ran with had gallys so they helped alot. It doesnt need to be done with all 32s. Would it help everyone being 32? Yes. But is it a must? No. Id rather have a level 31 with a max gally than a 32 who only has an icebreaker. The damage intake is a disadvantage if you are level 31 but it only means you just need to play more careful.

We had two 31s, one being myself, and 4 32s, beat him in 45 mins, half the deaths were from crota glitching too, all but two of us were random, its really quite easy with good teamwork and everyone listens

Here here and well said. I have 2 32 locks that wear glowhoo proudly. My 31 hunter, who is a sword-swingin psycho good for a dead crota 1 sword after ogres on a clean run, has no place in the HM though. Sure up to crota wouldn't be too crazy, aside from not getting smashed by cursed thrall in the abyss or mauled at the last lamp nearly instantly. She'd be fine crossing the bridge although it would take 7-8 smashes to kill the gatekeeper and 1 hit to die. But crota? Even while pecking at boomers exclusively, your overall DPS causes a time lag in the overall clearing of ads and which can be the difference between winning and wiping. And getting 1 shot by pretty much anything makes that 31 hunter o mine a team liability. She can swing the sword in normal until RNG gives me the piece I need and a reason to dump some of these 30-odd radiant shards taking up inventory space. Can I get her through? Probably..but crota would be pure donation from a group of ON POINT 32's...

I ran Crota on HM with five 32's and myself today. Given the proper strategy, I was extremely helpful while using the Black Hammer. The objective shouldn't be to kill all the boomers. Then you run into wizard problems. I was never tasked with truly killing anything myself and I turned out to be a very effective team member. We didn't finish it due to some glitch issues and some other miscellaneous problems, but we came within one hit three or four times and we would have completed had we not had people that had to go.

Well said...I was about to write the same post. I spent 4 hours with all 32's me being, the 31. I did everything I could but I didn't do enough. I felt I was a better player but not being a 32... Well said OP. Well said. I am waiting till I am a 32 to try again. I know it can be done but being a 31 In hard corta is a different animal.

Also beat it with 2 31s in my group. They did appear to struggle to live, but honestly, probably could have had 3 31s and gotten it. Don't quit HM. As strategy gets better, you will clear it.

4 RepliesWe had a 31 when we finally beat it. We did the middle strategy though. He was one of the people that helped distract the boomers with a sniper rifle. He not once died in the crystal room, so I'm thinking he was fairly skilled or just hid most of the time. But his boomer distracting really helped the swordbearer. So imho one 31 is ok. More than that....not so much

Edited by Lead: 1/24/2015 7:36:05 PMfrom experience up to 2 x 31 is fine for crota HM (maybe even 3) although we had to stop because of amno synth.. the mobs took a bit longer to kill with my 31 hunter (1200 precision damage vs 1400 with my timur lash) so that's not very much different if you know how to take cover. We run several time the whole encounter without being hit and only got killed by oversoul or exploding thralls :) - 32s DPS and sword - 31s DPS and boomer sniper(don't kill them or wizard will spawn so just a few headshot when they look at the sword bearer to distract them) and obviously a shit tons of amno synth.. we spent like 40 of them before our kill.. (with my 32 warlock with 2 31s ) the 31s must have DPS roles with maxed gjallarhorn or distract boomer with icebreaker or black hammer. (or any 331 sniper in fact..)

We always carry atleast one 31 with us just stay on boomer duty and honestly its not even to kill them just keep them distracted lol.

I'm a 31 and I beat crota last night. I wasn't carried and I lifted my weight. Not as hard as people say it is.

I did this up to bridge last night as a 31. One guy knew how to do it and everyone else(not including me)it was their first time. We had 3 32s and 3 31s. How was bridge and Deathsinger for you guys?
