Changes the Community would like to see Bungie make.

This thread is an open forum for people to discuss the direction in which Bungie is headed, which changes they should make in regards to both the website and community, and whether or not they are interacting with the community in a manner expected of a video game development studio. While this thread is not about Destiny, suggestions or fixes for Destiny that would help bolster the community are welcomed. EDIT: The Dark Theme is a given, so focus on everything else. • A lot of my concerns have already been voiced here, but I'll reiterate my top ones just to keep the fire burning: -Titles or something similar need to return: Titles on B.old gave users something to strive for, something to be able to show off to the everyone else is evidence that you were an active participant in the day-to-day goings-on Bungie.net. They also provided a provided a good disincentive to breaking forum rules. The years badge on our profile is nice but it doesn't really say anything about how much we provide to the community. Case in point, myself. I've had an account for 7 years, but there are a hell of a lot of people who have been here less than that and have been way more involved than me. -Heavier moderation: The self-moderation idea was admirable, but ultimately it just doesn't work. I may be able to mute a user and get them out of my sight, but that only buries the problem rather than fix it. People who may not understand that they are breaking certain rules- like, for example, posting something in the wrong forums- have no way of knowing that people are muting them because of it. There's no education for them. And for those that are breaking rules intentionally, the consequences aren't enforced until they really cross the line somewhere. Some people might think it would suck if the moderators got more ban-happy, but I think it's necessary, at least for a little while, to get the rules followed better. -Groups need to be given a purpose again: I'm not a great source on this issue since I largely wasn't involved in any groups before the site update, but I've read enough from other users to know it's a huge problem. I'd refer to more experienced members for suggestions on what needs to be done to fix groups, but I think my previous statement reiterates the biggest problem. -The community spirit of Bungie.net needs to be revitalized: So a little over a week ago now was the Pentathlon, which I've always known to be a small event that the community gets to weigh in on. It's always been fun to get a peek inside the studio and cheer on our favorite groups of newbies or old-timers. So I popped into the thread DeeJ made to make a post about my excitement to see how the day went, and the comments on it just made me sick. Here was this great little event, a tradition among both the studio and the forums, and everyone was trashing it just because it wasn't news about Destiny. The community has never been about one game, whether it be Marathon or Myth or Halo or Destiny. It's been about all of them and none of them, the people who made them, the friendships formed between random strangers through them. It's stronger than any one game. Unfortunately, this idea hasn't been emphasized for a while now. Employees barely seem to be around except for Destiny news. As Rollin pointed out, highlighted groups and players are nearly always offsite, which does nothing to promote the community here. I implore Bungie here more than anywhere else: interact with more as peers rather than salesmen. Promote the folks here first and foremost. Make the community feel like more than a bunch of customers.

      • I would like longer, more detailed weekly updates. Every time i open the new one i know there is going to be one thing about this and that, then some pretty useless videos/statistics/general yaddayadda, and finally the famous "we are listening but it sure as hell does not seem like it" lines written like a true politician.

        • Other have suggested titles, but rather than basing on age, maybe it would help to base them on number of "likes" or followers. This would still allow veteran users to gain titles, as they have more time to accumulate likes, while also motivating new users to post funny, constructive or helpful content. Yes, such a system would be open to abuse from people creating alts to like/follow themselves, but I think that's a marginal group and the overall impact would be positive.

        • I've noticed people have been missing the point of the thread lately. Maybe you may want to change the title to something along the lines of "Changes to Bungie.net the Community Wants to See"? Then maybe in bold at the start of the original post remind this is for suggestions concerning the website.

              • I guess another thing I would ask for is an open dialogue with Bungie. Not just some simple "We're always listening!" comment but some actual open dialogue between Bungie and the community. A conversation about this. Please.

                    • The Community is gone. There is no longer a Seventh Column, and what always hurts the most is when I think about that and realize that it wasn't the darkness the killed us, but the last few months. At every turn the community has cried out, voicing their concerns and thoughts, and we've only been met with silence, or empty reassurances. How long did we scream for sub forums until they finally got implemented? How long will we wait for other things to change, if ever? There are very fundamental things that are killing this community, and it honestly saddens me to think that at the rate things are going, my time on this site, over six years, might be coming to an end soon. And I've said this before, I don't want the old community back. I don't mind change, but this hasn't been a change, it been an extinction. There is nothing that makes people value their accounts. Groups are a shell of what they used to be, and the forums aren't a forum. They're a message board where most conversations only happen between a small handful of people. I don't mind change when it's an improvement. I don't mind trying something new. But we've tried this now for a rather long while, and no one is happy with how it is now. Things need to change again. 1. Dialogue The last time we made a stink like this as a community, we got a little bit of dialogue, and we ultimately got some change to how the forums fundamentally worked. A change that didn't solve all of the problems, but was still a step in the right direction. Why can't we do that more often? I understand that there are other more pressing responsibilities, but is it really so hard to once in a while making a thread and asking "how do you guys feel? What do you think is working, and what could use a little more work?" Constant dialogue like that is not only great for you as a company (its a great way to show your involvement in the people who support you), but it's a boon to the community. Why not let us help you help us? What's so wrong with that? 2. Investment People need to feel more invested in their accounts and the community as a whole. There is nothing tying anyone to their account. If I were banned today I could simply make a new account a few seconds later, and be just as effective in interacting with this forum as I am now. I'm not saying member titles need to make a comeback, but there's not denying that in the old system they carried weight. Mythic members have always been trolls, but because of they're title bars when push came to shove people knew they could rely on them. Who do you turn to now? Some kind of title system, whatever it is, lets people put worth into their account, and is a way of highlighting more esteemed users. Yes the system has problems, but it also has a lot of benefits. 3. Groups Why is it that every Group Spotlight has been a community not from Bnet? Yes, the Destiny community is wide and varied, and it's important to highlight that, but are there no communities of equal caliber here? There are, but they lack to tools to prove it. Forum traffic has been reduced entirely to the group wall, which is fine, they're a great way of staying in touch and having small talk with others, but they don't allow you to have the kinds of drawn out, expansive conversations forums do. Groups need more tools to actually be meaningful. Right now they're great for getting a custom clan tag in game, and having a little IM chat with your close friends. There's not much else. 4. The Forums This is my last point, because in comparison to the others I think it's the lowest priority. I don't entirely dislike this new forum structure. I think tags and sub posts have their place, but in this current incarnation these are more of an expansive message board then they are a forum. Discussions are limited to the person who made the first post, and the person that replied. A nested comment might be the best comment in the entire thread, but no one else is going to see it, other then the person it was originally directed at. These forums are great for getting through a lot of information quickly, but they're not meant for discussion. Look, I still think you guys are one of the best companies out there, and I still cherish this website. I mean, I've spent more of my life on here then I have anywhere else. I don't want to bring back the old days. Yes I'm nostalgic but I understand and value change. I just want to make sure that change lets this rich and varied community continue as strongly as it once did, and not as a swarm of angry complaints that drown out everything good.

                      • Don't fix it if it isn't broke applies here. Tons of new and great features were added, but at the cost of other older ones. We need a return of what people in this thread have been talking about. It ranges from better private groups to titles to dark theme (my fault, via Halcylon) to more interaction. It's not a simple process or a one step situation, but we understand that. "Soon" is not enough. As for the game, well, it needs to be more social. There is no way to properly share your experiences with other players. No custom games or private matches, no forge, no exploration other than with two people, and so on. I understand if the consoles are limiting you, but some of these have to be possible. I don't want to invest in something that doesn't fill my time. In fact, I can't invest in something like that. The game is shallow , acting as little more than a framework of what it could, should, can, and probably will be. The fact that it's looking like I have to pay $80 more for the rest of the game is honestly disgusting. Depending on the content and price I may not even buy it. I have no intention of wasting my time and money on something that doesn't serve its purpose. That goes the same for the site. I don't want to see a mess of broken topics littering the forum. I want conversations and proper structure. I want rules that aren't so lenient without being too firm. DeeJ, this is mainly directed at you now. I want your voice with ours. I want you to tell me why these things can't happy, why they might, that they can, or that you don't know. I don't want an apology, I want a community manager to help the few members of the community who are fighting to keep it alive. I don't mean that only a small portion of the community is helping, I mean most of us are getting involved but that's it. This is all we are now. We've lost so many and some who are here don't even care much anymore. I'm not sure I can't count myself as one of them. Help us bring them back and bring in new members. There's no community to come to anymore, but we can change that together, all of us. Just, please, don't let this community die. Don't let that be your legacy. Don't let this franchise fail. Don't let that be Bungie's legacy. I don't want to see the greatness of Bungie descend from legend into myth. Once more, with feeling.

                              • The games Destiny and Warframe share similar conceits, but vastly different approaches to community interaction. The Warframe developers: Digitel Extremes, have WEEKLY LIVE shows with their players where questions get asked and answered, and upcoming events/Free DLC's get previewed. The Warframe Developers are Center Stage EVERY other week with LIVE shows where the DIRECTLY ANSWER Warframe players questions and concerns. Bungie's PR strategy with their VERY FRUSTRATED and DIMINISHING fans seems to be : Shut Up, Go -blam!- Yourselves. We will tell you whats best for you...we are too busy at the moment buying Diamond Dildos to Shove up our ASSES, out of the Money you Wasted on this half baked Turd. Prediction: Warframe will be going Strong in 10 years, while Bungie will go the way of THQ.

                                    • »The singular improvement I want is clear indication of Bungie's intentions with this site. In the past (read >3 years), development was consistent, thus there was never an issue. However, as of the post-Halo IP epoch, this has become increasingly uncommon. In the preceding three years, we've seen site functions slowly stripped, under the pretense that the new IP demands code changes that the old features would no longer function under. "Fear not," we were assuaged, "such things would return, with interest, as the site is rebuilt." I accepted this because, as a programmer, it made sense to me. While I hated seeing stickies removed, private group security roles and resources excised, and mains gamification wiped out, I trusted our benevolent overlords. Looking back now, we have yet to see any of the improvements introduced back into the site. Private groups are largely pointless, serving only as a constant source of nagging message indication. They offer so little customization and control to the admins, making their operation about as meaningful as a debate on religion within offtopic. While we have seen Mentors established, as a rarely delegated role solely for customer support it hardly has the same impact that the forum roles of past had, nor what new forum roles could have if properly evolved. Webcams? Gone. Meet the team? Gone. Regular, communicative updates and periodic, participative, and comedic employee involvement on-site? Gone. We do have a nice map of the tower, in case I forget where the speaker will be able to send me on baseless quests or if I want to know where to upgrade my loading screen space ship, but that's just an ultra light one-off, not something that actually serves in an ongoing process of continual development. I'm tired of cryptic allusions and optimistic messages. Do you want a community? Just a help site? Clear cut "Yes" or "No." No more "Wait© for our Plan™ to 'kick in.'®" or "There are such awesome things you, like, don't even know." Is there actual interest from the web team? Can we expect new, interesting, and useful things? Should those that want an evolving online experience find another site? I do not demand work be done, only that clear intention be given. It's almost ridiculous that it even needs said. Not only does Bungie have a fan base that wants to grow and participate, but they have one that has proven capable of doing so in the past. "I can't wait to see what you guys do with the new community!" Yeah, we can't wait to see what you do with it either, DeeJ.
