They've avoided that magazine cover^ They posted this image instead http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/80251000/jpg/_80251429_80251428.jpg. and have numerous photos of stands where the latest issue is sold out, yet no photos of the issue itself. The BBC has been pushing out articles in which the importance of freedom of speech and expression is shouted from the rooftops, but they don't actually show us the controversial drawings. For those who would like to see for themselves, this article contains many embedded images, and the shots that show the offensive magazine carefully obscure the prophet http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-30808284 Is it a rational avoidance by a company that does reporting (and has allies) in many Islamic communities? Or is this a slap in the face to the entire point of not backing down to extremism? Please be civil in the comments.

Just because you have freedom of speech doesn't mean you can offend anyone. With the BBC in general, there are guidelines that are enforced. The same reason why pictures of dicks can't just fly around news channels as it's is sensitive material. This isn't about BBC limiting it's freedoms, it's about BBC enforcing it's guidelines that it held long before the situation in Paris. If anything, it's showing that BBC isn't willing to sacrifice it's own integrity to have a go at potentially offending a group of people with the excuse of freedom of speech and expression as a justification. They stayed a respectable news outlet. [Although BBC has many other issues when it comes to its own problems, but thats another story].

  • They have official guidelines which at the moment prevent them from portraying images of the prophet. The guidelines were there before Paris. There are ongoing high level meetings happening at the moment to decide whether to change the policy in light of recent happenings.

    • How can anyone get offended by a drawing to the point they're willing to commit mass murder? It's the 21st century you'd have thought mankind as a species would be better than this, these radicals serve no purpose whatsoever in today's society and I wish there was a way to completely wipe them all off the planet. If these idiots ever succeeded we'd be put back to the Stone Age believing in magical beings from story books.

    • Guess the French are more willing to follow through with their claims of supporting liberty/freedom of speech.

How about we talk about the comedian that was arrested.
The Paris prosecutor’s office has said it has opened an investigation into the comedian Dieudonné M’bala M’bala, after a Facebook post in which he said “I feel like Charlie Coulibaly”.
muh freedom of speech http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/jan/12/french-comedian-dieudonne-charlie-coulibaly-prosecutor

        • They have no obligation to print it but they're cowards for choosing not to.

          • It's a national news broadcast, it would be wrong for it to actively offend a fair amount of its viewership. It's up to others to spread it I suppose.

          • I'm not sure how I feel about this. It's their right not to show it and it's almost better that they're focusing on the people. Maybe they're just being respectful and fearful.

          • I think they should of had it, not gone out of their way to omit the cover from the picture.

Funny French satire If they are trying to avoid the controversy and support Charlie Hebdo, then they shouldn't be preaching that they're all about free speech on the news.

Not ok at all. And let's clarify that Mahmad didn't want people worshiping his image and thus did not want people to immortalize his image.

              • I think it's a reasonable precaution. If there's a chance(however small) that showing those images would put somebody at risk, then, to me, it's understandable to avoid showing them while tensions are high.

I really don't mind if they do or not. I would prefer to be able to see it, but if they don't then I'm ok with it.
