Uncanny coincidence or smart loot system?
While i don't see myself as a collector, i would like to have 1 of each exotic weapon. And up till yesterday i was missing only 4:
4th horseman
monte carlo
hawkmoon
red death
Yesterday i nailed 2 exotics, and as luck would have it, they were hawkmoon and red death.
That got me thinking, getting exotics is rare enough, but what are the odds of getting 2 of the few exotics i'm missing? Then i though back a bit further; the last exotic i got before yesterday was also one i was missing. So the last 3 exotics i got were NOT duplicates, when i already have nearly all exotic weapons in the game. Could this just be an uncanny coincidence? Or could it be that the game actually follows what you have and raises the odds of you getting an exotic you don't yet have?
Note: 2 of these exotics were rewards at the end of the Crota Raid.

7 RepliesCoincidence. 100%. Sometimes RNG will seem to follow a pattern. It doesn't. It's just your mind playing games with you.

I haven't gotten a new exotic weapon since the first week of ce. I've gotten a few duplicates since then though.

Edited by jay p: 1/8/2015 4:51:06 PMRNG. The only exotics I have ever received were ones I had already bought from Xur. The Last Word, Truth, Patience and Time, Plan C, etc. I am the exact opposite of all the people that complain that Xur immediately sells whatever exotic they just got from a drop.

I've gotten form Crota Dragons Breath (1st) Hawkmoon (2nd) P&T (4th) Truth (too many to count) No Land Beyond (2nd)

7 RepliesI think I read somewhere that Crota's End actually does increase chances for drops you haven't had yet or decreases odds for drops you have gotten. Aside from that, I think you were just lucky. If you role a die six times and get 1-6 in order, it doesn't mean the die has greater chances of rolling numbers you haven't had before. Each number has a 1/6 chance of being rolled, no matter how many times you roll, so getting each number in 6 rolls is just a coincidence.

My last 5 at least have been duplicates. 2 ice breakers, 2 truths, 1 patience and time in the past two weeks

2 RepliesI have made it out well seeing as how the only duplicate exotic I have ever received is Thunderlord. I am still missing quite a few though but that's alright, Xur sold the ones I'm missing, I didn't have a need for them. The ones he hasn't sold and that I don't have are Red Death, Hard Light, and the Remote.

It can't be a smart system. (I know you're talking about exotics, same idea though) I just got my 5th Swordbreaker from Crota. This is the order I got my raid weapons (note: about 60% of my Crota drops were 2 shards or energy, no weapons.) Swordbreaker Swordbreaker Swordbreaker Swordbreaker Light of the Abyss Swordbreaker And that's all. It can't be smart.

Crota's end raid loot actually does follow what you already have so there is a higher chance (if only slightly) that you will get something new. I know they said this in a weekly update before the DLC came out, but I'm too lazy to go back, find it, and quote it.

I've gotten a Gjallahorn drop when I already owned one. Not that you were talking about Legendaries, but I had received Bad Seed Down like three weeks in a row from nightfall as well. I've gotten a ton of exotics as well from RNG, but I still loathe it. I love the exotic bounty system, where you have difficult(ish) objectives to acquire Exotic rewards. That's what Bungie wanted when they were marketing their game during development, they wanted every exotic to have a story about how it was acquired. Instead it's RNG up the butt. Regardless of how well RNG has treated me, I think it's a crap system.

Got enough duplicates to have a separate vault at the tower, not that I'm complaining ;) only need thunder Lord, hard light, and the 2 raid primarys :)

4 RepliesNever gotten a duplicate exotic weapon and I thing I have bout 13 now. I also have this superstition that the games RNGeus rewards you for variety of game play. I just seems to me that if I haven't played crucible in a while, with the first 5 games I get an exotic or legendary engram. Same situation with strikes. Been playing them solidly for the last few days. In the first ten strikes I got 3 legendaries, a legendary ship and universal remote. Contrast with my most recent 10 where I've literally been struggling to get 1 blue. I plan to head back to the crucible to see if my theory pays off

No it's random. Frustratingly so. I bought a nitc as my 331 scout of choice and I've now had three more drop. I kept the one with firefly and zen! I can't for the life of me find a 331 void fusion. That'd make me so damn happy!

Got a duplicate icebreaker just yesterday from the chest in ce. Got two non duplicates from nightfall so I'm guessing rng. Just got lucky mate.

I got two new exotics this week I was not expecting. Monte Carlo from a purple from the daily (where half my purples come from) and two Vexes from the VOG. People hate on the dailys because the xp doesn't level your weapons and it's only 2 engrams but you get planet materials and marks too. It more than you get for a strike. And for some reason, most of my purples come either during or for a reward for the daily.
