Possible non-pvp solution to purchasing faction gear?

Actually, the fix would be pretty easy. Why not make faction currencies? It's always bothered me that while doing patrol missions, you would do the mission for FWC, but if you were wearing Dead Orbit class item, your rep gain would go to Dead Orbit and you got nothing from FWC. Why not get the rep from Dead Orbit for representing them, but get PAID by the faction putting out the bounty? This would give PVE'rs a non-pvp way to earn faction marks while still maintaining the integrity of the vanguard system by splitting the marks earned up between the factions...because if they were rewarded crucible marks, it would be easier to just allow vanguard marks to be usable to purchase faction gear and I don't believe Bungie wants to go that route. So, to summarize, patrol missions would reward rep to whichever faction you represent, but pay you with faction marks from whichever faction issued the bounty/mission request. The faction vendors would accept either crucible or their own faction marks as payment for their gear.

I'm not a Bungie Employee, but to comment on your solution, I feel that while it is a possible one, it's not entirely optimal given the way that patrols currently work. There's no indicator when you start up a patrol mission as to which NPC is giving you the mission, and while it is certainly possible to keep grinding till you get a patrol mission from your preferred faction, the fact that the Cryptarch, Eva Levantes (Why the HELL does she need to cull information from the Cabal Network?) and many others are also in the NPC Pool I feel like it would be just as frustratingly grindy as the 50 resources for 10 marks thing that was going on previously. Furthermore, having marks for each type of faction adds a ton of complexity to the game, and if there's anything this game probably doesn't need it's more types of currency. I think factions are an important part of Destiny's universe, and despite their current Crucible oriented presence in the tower, I really do feel there should be options to allow PvE players to represent their favorite faction without going into the Crucible. Whether this would be best implemented as a Vendor who is capable of exchanging currencies (How about a Banker who is in the center of the three Vaults?) or just allowing players to spend either Vanguard or Crucible Marks with the Faction Vendors, the solution should simplify the game rather than make it more complex.

    • Just use the system they have now. Make it so you can buy any gear, whether it be dead orbit, fwc, or vanguard with vanguard or crucible marks and a commendation from the respective faction. So would be like this: Vanquashier viii 150 crucible marks or 150 vanguard marks 1 new monarchy commendation So to purchase a new monarchy weapon you need the correct amount of marks and a commendation from that faction. This way anyone can purchase weapons from any faction.

      • There used to be a way for PvE players to get currency for factions. It was called the Materials Exchange and Bungie did away with it for no apparent reason.

      • this will not happen. period. it doesn't matter how much we bitch, whine, and complain.. simply bc bungie is set on "their game" being "party" based and or driven.. meaning they -blam!- over the lone wolves... and they've made rewards for being a lone wolf.. so minuscule that it comes down to a pathetic and unbearably slow grind. which is the way bungie wants it in an attempt to stretch out game longevity to also help buffer the hit of having jack shit for content. so as much as changing this would be.. they will never bc they have zero intention of really giving enough content to keep people doing things.

Your idea is interesting but a little over complicated, in my opinion. Also, since the issuing faction of a patrol mission is not known ahead of time, it could take a long time to accumulate enough of that specific faction's marks. I would suggest having Factions, but not Lord Shaxx and the Crucible Quartermaster, accept both kinds of marks and commendations. This could be justified in-game by the fact that factions are issuing requests to patrolling guardians. They clearly have interest in more than just the Crucible. Another possible solution would be to have faction class items convert vanguard mark gains into "faction marks" and allow faction vendors to accept either type of commendation. EDIT: and thank you for your original suggestion. It sparked my own thinking. :)

          • Why not just have factions take vanguard or crucible marks?
