Tis true.
I have a friend that runs my local airsoft site (for those that don't know, it's like paintball, but better).
He's 50ish, ex Airbourne Signals, and served in 5 different campaigns, Iraqi Freedom being his last. This Armistice day (Nov 11th) he received his latest service medal.
The guys been down on his luck with housing and money (NOW SORTED), so we decided to do something special.
During the Falklands Conflict (his first war) the L1A1 SLR was the standard issue weapon of the British Army, a weapon that's loved by many, but as an Airsoft weapon it was produced as a one off, and now it's like rocking horse poo. They have been known to sell privately for over £800 (or $1250) and it's often cheaper to buy a decommissioned real one.
The players saved for over 2 months, regular players donating cash, as well as people that have never met him before, and in the end, we found someone willing to sell (he was loosing his eyesight, and so giving up airsofting) and had accumulated enough to buy the weapon.
This morning after the safety brief, we presented it to him for his birthday, and he just broke down in tears.
This is a man who's been in 5 wars, passed P-Coy Carda (Pathfinder Platoon) at a time when the parachute regiment was told to tone down the difficulty as the pass rate was lower than the SAS selection!
Anyway, he was choked for the most part of the morning, and I just wanted to share a story that the collective will of Civilians can do.
If you care you care, if you don't you don't.
