Feminism, racism, victimization

Just a bit of back ground: I'm japanese, native, german/scot/irish with a pretty even mix. I look hispanic and in summer can appear to be darker. I grew up in a community that was 95% white (according to city-data). There were three non white people in my class including me. I grew up with racism. I know it's ugly face and through years of living amongst this community I learned to really know the difference between someone who is merely ignorant and repeating what they've heard and someone who hates you for existing. I've been called a "-blam!-" "spic" "gook" more times than I can count. I've been in more fights than I can I count. I can honestly say that I've come face to face with personal and institutionalized racism many times in my life. I would never be the one to say that racism doesn't exist. Yet through it all I've learned one thing... IF YOU ARE EQUAL YOU WILL BE EQUAL. No matter what they -blam!-ing tell you. This is forged in fire. You may not have equality from the community or government but they do not decide your worth, you do. Not once did I appeal to higher authority to help me. Why should I appeal to a white man to help me against a white man (or a black man, more on that later). To do so is to give acknowledgment to a power that doesn't truly exist. *****DISCLAIMER OVER***** Now for the kicker. After I graduated I moved to Phoenix for school. No juicy stories here. All I can tell you is that as an American there were a few places where Mexicans gathered (bars, festivals) where it was obvious that I was not welcome. I now live in Petersburg which is around 70% black. When I first moved here I worked for a prison which in which my entire chain of command was black and guess what? Personal and institutionalized racism, except this time I wasn't a "-blam!-" I was a "White Boy" which despite not being on the official list of racial slurs carries the exact same intonation coming from the right mouth (occasionally I was the "oppressor" but that was only from inmates). Now I work for a company in human services with my wife. My entire chain of command up to the ceo is female. And just yesterday I had a meeting with a case manager who explained to everyone how her 3 year old nephew was such a "chauvinist pig." A conversation that was very well received by almost everyone in the room. There are plenty of examples but I'm tired of explaining. But you must be wondering what is the point of this post.
I AM SICK OF HEARING THAT I NEED TO CARE ABOUT BLACK PEOPLE, THAT I NEED TO CARE ABOUT WOMEN, THAT I NEED TO FEEL SORRY FOR THEM, TO HAVE "COMPASSION AND THAT I NEED TO CHAMPION ALL OF THEIR (VERY SELF-SERVING) CAUSES.
PEOPLE are racist. People are sexist. No not just white male people with "privilege" ALL people. If you are different from a majority that majority will react to that difference. So you can say "racist people" but the simpler version is to call them "people" and just let racist and sexist be part of the definition. Every man (or woman of any color) has the responsibility to care for and respect themselves. If you identify with a community and want to champion their cause so be it, but is that community's sole responsibility to do it for themselves. But keep in mind that appealing to an authority that may be comprised of your "oppressors" to hand you equality (read political and social power) is an act of weakness. Have some dignity, have some honor, don't hide your push for power in the guise of victimization. Once you have it there is no doubt in my mind that you will be just as petty and disgusting as the current system if not more so. Why, because you are PEOPLE AND LIKE IT OR NOT YOU SHARE ALL THE SAME VICES AS YOUR "OPRESSORS."

Your telling people to not be victims. That wont go over too well with many.Being a victim is the cool new thing to be. It gets you attention and rewards. I agree with you though.

      • I can confirm. My sister is ten years my junior. Went to the same middle school that I did. When I went there were mostly white kids there. When she went there it was mostly Hispanics. Same with my high school except for that my parents pulled her out and moved her to another school. The driving reason behind that was because the other Hispanic kids were treating her poorly because she was white. You see it too with the Ferguson protestors and supporters. The white man is the enemy. All white people are the ones holding us down, treating us like shit, killing us in the streets. So it's okay to treat all of them like shit and call them racial slurs. Hell, 50 Cent saw Exodus and someone was posting some Tumblr levels of stupid about how the white man was stealing black culture.

        • Physical racism I can understand getting upset over. You said you have been in fights quite often in your youth, but verbal racism is something I can't personally understand as something to get upset over. Words are just noises we make with our mouths, some have meaning, some worse than others, but in the end it's the receiver who decides to be offended or not. Just my thoughts. Your story was a good read and I wish you the best of luck in all your future endeavors.

          • I somewhat agree, but I always think to judge people individually. So if someone's being racist, (which IMO the term gets used far out of context most of the time) then I judge only them and I try to find potential reasoning for saying such things. If they're just dicks then yes I will think less of them.

          • Everyone just needs to stop being a puss all the time! Everyone has problems and some problems are worse than others. We just need to recognize who needs legitimate help, not all this boo how "I'm a victim so give me special privileges" nonsense. This crap goes deeper into our society every day, now we're at a point where feminists are grabbing for power and using it to to ban, censor, and shun anyone and anything they see fit. We have to realize that we live in a society built of communities and individuals with their own opinions and ideas, not everyone has to think the same as you. That is all.

          • Awesome post and I agree in full. You'll find this anywhere you go - not just white areas. It's a natural response to react to someone who isn't like you, or to side with those who are. Some people combine this response with ignorace and that's where you'll find the bad eggs. Even if everyone looked the same, we'd still separate by social class, sub-culture, or ideologies. I went to a mostly white school and everyone there divided in the same way. You had the preps, the goths, the nerds, the thugs, the junkies, etc.

                • Showing compassion is not equality. Showing compassion means you feel sorry for them, that they are less fortunate. You cannot ask for compassion and claim equality at the same time.

                      • You're taking to the wrong crowd brah. Most of these people will benefit from white privilege and will not give a crap about non-caucasian or bi- racial social problems. Just work hard and be like all other asian or bi racial people , make money. It is a fact that asians make more money then caucasians but intentional institutionalized racism or social perceptions of other races will always put you in a shitty position. Will thats just my subjective opinion.

                        • Society sure is a tough thing to manage. You're totally right that when one group takes over, they then start to resemble the previous. Due to the way all species are, humanity will have to battle against totalitarianism in one aspect or another forever. People will always find a way to see some difference. Humans also wish to be distinctive from others in their own groups. Which grows even more divisions between people. I made my mind up on this topic a long time ago and realized things will just keep on perpetuating themselves.
