Method to upgrade VAULT OF GLASS drops to LVL 32

Edit: This was written before Crota's End came out. This is a suggestion for Bungie to consider. Hopefully they're reading. You may read the title and be thinking "Uh....Wouldn't that negate any and all reason to play Crota's End?". Well... it depends on the upgrade method. So first, I'll address why that wouldn't be the case. And then go on to explain why I think this in fact may be a good idea. We all know the #1 priority for the DLC raid should be to encourage people to play the hell out of Crota's End, get new gear, new weapons etc. I think this idea does exactly that. Alright, here's the scenario. You've done the raid. You've gotten duplicate gear. And so dismantling Crota's End gear and weapons will give you a special currency item... Let's give this special item a lame placeholder name: "Hive Core". You'd go up to Eris with your VoG gear equipped and she'll offer to upgrade it to Level 32 if you have the currency to do so. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I made a quick, little animation to illustrate how I envision it working (similar to Iron Banner reforge): http://i.imgur.com/Dnp4f8G.gif A list of positive outcomes from this feature.. (click Spoiler tag to see a list)
1) You still have to do the new raid. You still have to get the new gear/weapons in order to dismantle them. 2) Because you'd need to dismantle two Crota's End items to upgrade one VoG item, it would give you more incentive to repeat the raid. You'd have two LVL-32 raid sets to obtain instead of just one. It would extend the life of the expansion pack, and give you more stuff to do. 3) "Ugh! Chestplate AGAIN??". These moments would be reduced since duplicates have more of a use to players. They can be dismantled in order to obtain a second LVL32 raid set. 4) Because you need an expensive 2 "Hive Cores", not many people will be able to upgrade their stuff for a while. So Bungie needn't fear that their brand new, cool weapons and armour aren't being enjoyed. 5) It would allow more choice / customisation since you aren't forced to only use Crota gear to reach 32. You can mix and match between the 2 raid gear sets and personalise your Guardian to your playstyle. If you like the extra Heavy Ammo perk on your VoG gear, then you can make use of it. 6) Following on from point 4. If your favourite weapon is Fatebringer for example, but you're not too keen on the newest handcannon. It would allow you bring your old, trusty handcannon into the newest content. 7) You wouldn't get this nagging feeling that all your progress in a raid goes to waste with the release of every expansion. Since they'd be future-proofed by this progression path. 8) If you get chestplate, chestplate, chestplate, chestplate every single run, and never get boots. You could dismantle some of those chestplates and upgrade VoG boots to inch closer to 32. You'll always be making progress, it's a way to mitigate the negatives of RNG. Apparently RNG will be improved with this new raid however which is nice, but every little bit helps I suppose.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You can stop reading here if you wish, this is just a hypothetical price listing because NM drops and HM drops will need different price-tags to preserve their respective rarity. I think the Crota's End Equivalent of these items drop in Normal Mode Crota's End. Hence the low cost to upgrade.
VoG Chestplate - 2 Cores VoG Gauntlets - 2 Cores VoG Boots - 2 Cores Praedyth's Revenge - 2 Cores Praetorian Foil - 2 Cores Found Verdict - 2 Cores Hezen Vengeance - 2 Cores Corrective Measure - 2 Cores
I think the Crota's End Equivalent of these items drop in Hard Mode Crota's End*. Hence the high cost to upgrade.
VoG Helmet - 6 Cores Vision of Confluence - 6 Cores Fatebringer - 6 Cores Praedyth's Timepiece - 6 Cores Atheon's Epilogue - 6 Cores
Edit: Rather than invent a new currency. Radiant materials would probably do, since they're obtained only in Crota's End. *The high costs shown in the latter list ensures that you can't just easily obtain a Level 32 VoG helmet or primary weapon from doing a couple of Normal Mode Crota's End runs. You'd need to do the Hard Mode Crota's End if you want to upgrade your helmet/primaries in a reasonable time-frame. Hive Cores would drop exclusively from the Hard Mode raid to help you out in this regard. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A list of positive outcomes from this feature.. • This is a great idea. Means you need current raid gear/weapons to make old raid gear/weapons relevant again. Those that don't wish to grind to upgrade old gear - no problem, the current stuff will get you to max light anyway with less effort. Win/win as far as I can see. Just adds more choice and variety.

  • Nope. Let the old gear fade away. The last thing this game needs are more currencies and an even more convoluted upgrade system.

    • We should have a system like this for upgrading any gear, including blues using items dropped from current raids.

    • Bump. It's silly that I can get a commendation and 75-150 marks and get better gear than I can get from VoG.

You're idea is great but instead of Hive core how about we use Radiants energy/shards. I've got everything that Crota's got to offer for me so CE raid is not a viable option for me now but I'd love to go there and farm Radiants so I can Lv up my VoG gear. I have 150+ of these and I'd love to reforge a pice of gear for 25+ Radiants.

First off, I think this is a brilliant idea, it works perfectly at pleasing people (like myself) who feel faced with the question of: Sub-par gear/weapons you enjoy using because they fit your play style which increases your satisfaction Or New gear/weapons that you (possibly) do not actually like using, but choose to because it's from the latest expansion and therefor has a higher attack and defense If the argument against this is: "Then no one would play Crota's End" Than my counter argument is: "No because the necessary materials can only come from the newest raids. And using that same logic means no one will ever play previous raids ever again, especially if they join Destiny after 2 or 3 expansions" That would mean every time bungie releases a new raid, it makes the previous raid irrelevant by having no replay value, and no reason for new comers to try them. All that time spent designing the VoG (content mind you, content that people already say there isn't enough of) just so 3 months later they release an expansion that gives no one any reason to ever return to that content. Content/Time(pun intended)/Money wasted. And the OP's idea for upgrading VoG gear requires you to still beat Crota's End". The grind for loot in this game is not driven by the name of the gear, but instead it is solely driven by the attack/defense rating. And if the only way to increase your VoG gear is by beating a different raid, then people will do just that. They will face the same challenge as everyone else, but choose to be rewarded with the option to upgrade a different raids gear (that they still had to earn). I see no flaw in the OP idea. Multiple times bungie has said something along the lines of "gear/weapons that change the way you play" and I feel like that kind of comment is why I would love to have VoG gear/weapons that are of equal attack and defense to Crotas End gear/weapons, as well as the rest of the raids still to come. Make them statistics-wise equal, and make them different by the perks/upgrade nodes. Two years from now it would be great if before starting some new difficult Vex strike you have to tell your fireteam "hold on I have to go to the tower to get my VoG (or Crota) gear/weapons to help beat this one" and the same goes for every future raids gear/weapons, multiple expansions later. Besides, what better way to diversify the appearance of guardians (which has been the request of many) than to allow people to equip past raids gear/weapons without the dilemma of the gear/weapons age negatively effecting its utility. I really hope Bungie takes a look at this and sees the same value. Please Bungie Please

      • Brilliant. It would be great if vog, crota and all future raids don't become obsolete as soon as a new dlc drops. I still don't have vision of confluence...I'd like a reason to play vog so I could get one, knowing that it would be usable when HOW is released.

      • I would gladly struggle in the VoG on level 33 if it meant I would have top tier legendary VoC. I just want to keep having fun with that gun and have it be just as relevant as other legendary's

I have to disagree making a new VoG would invalidate CE and every raid moving forward. What should've been done was normal mode Crota should've been level 31, leave vanguard gear as it was and make new players have to go through VoG to get to Crota. As far as the weapons go its the nature of this genre of game that better equipment will come and the old will become obsolete. The thing is to add new weapons to fill in the gap. Bungie unfortunately took a page out of WoW's book by basically boosting new players. Hopefully they've seen the fault in that logic and will act accordingly in the future. This being more or less a first of its kind game there are bound to be mistakes along the way, the important thing is that they learn moving forward.

        • Couldn't agree more. Some of these drops have taken me literally months to get. I started playing back in the beginning of October, doing the raid sometimes multiple times a week with different characters and just a few days ago the mythoclast FINALLY dropped. I completely agree we should be given options to upgrade weapons or gear in which we've already invested quite a bit of effort and time. I'd really hate to see them become nothing more than useless shards at this point.
