Best Melee Build in the game! Defender Titan offense [updated +PvP]

Update: After playing with this build longer I am willing to declare that it is my favourite Titan build of all. Not just because it's fun to punch things in the face (it is) but because the build is extremely effective, even on the hardest endgame content. I would even use it in the raid except for the Atheon fight and making sure not to punch fanatics. The fact that you get a recharging Force Barrier after punching something is just so good I can hardly overstate it. Also adding PvP commentary below. Note: at the time of my writing this I have this build on my Titan. Feel free to look at it on my profile but be mindful that I won't have it on all the time. Also, give this thread a bump if you find this build interesting. Criticism is of course welcome. I've been using a build for the Defender Titan subclass that is beastly and I haven't seen other people really experimenting with. It's a melee based build - the best possible in the game right now by a long shot. It aims to take full advantage of what I think is the most useful melee ability in the game: Disintegrate/Force Barrier. This is based on PvE and I have not tried using this in PvP. Here's the build: Armour and weapons Exotic: No Backup Plans Every effort should be made to maximize Strength. Intellect comes second. Discipline is not important for this build. This will not be possible for many people but Battlecage of Kabr (the raid helmet) helps a lot. Auto rifle/Shotgun/Machine gun loadout is good. Especially shotfun. Would love to try out Universal Remote but I don't have it. Monte Carlo would be GODLY with this but I don't play on PS. If you do and have Monte Carlo you can probably get away with less strength investment. Subclass perks: Grenade of your choice Jump of your choice Armor of Light (maximum damage resistance inside Ward of Dawn) Unbreakable (Force Barrier constantly recharges) Armour + battle recovery Relentless (Force Barrier is stronger and lasts longer) +All attributes Untouchable (reduces cooldown on Ward of Dawn) How to play it: With No Backup Plans and Relentless, Force Barrier lasts I think 25 seconds. If your strength is maxed out, that means that when it runs out there will only be two or three seconds before your melee is charged again. Force barrier is much stronger than your regular shield and continuously recharges, making you extremely hard to kill in this time. When fighting mobs this build allows you to chain Force Barriers virtually indefinitely. But that's not all! Ward of Dawn is also very important. Instead of seeing it as cover that buffs you like most builds, this one treats Ward of Dawn as another suit of armor. You should pop it in the midst of enemies when your Force Barrier is down and fight off enemies from within the Ward until you can charge FB again. The great thing about WoD is that the next one will be charging while you are protected. With solid Intellect and Untouchable (and especially with the raid helm if you have it) you will charge WoD very quickly so don't be afraid to use it. I've punched to death 3 sword-weilding knights inside my bubble with Armor of Light active, to give you an idea of how strong it is and why I would definitely recommend it above Blessing of Light for this build. So there you have it. An extremely satisfying build for wrecking the Darkness face to face in PvE. If you like this give the thread a bump so people can see it. PvP update: I've run this build in several PvP matches now (with scout rifle/fusion rifle/machine gun loadout) and it is definitely not underpowered but it lacks its PvE wow factor. You will only get Force Barrier occasionally but the length of time it stays with you is extremely helpful. It means that after you melee kill someone you have a marked advantage in your next encounter guaranteed. However, Force Barrier feels much weaker in PvP. It pops in seconds so you can't see yourself as a God. It's only an advantage; not virtual invulnerability. However, Armor of Light IS virtual invulnerability in PvP. Some fool is going to run in and give you a free FB and then you can basically do what you want. You will win fights with your melee inside your bubble even if someone tries to shotgun you (probably not against Invective though). I PUNCHED BLADEDANCERS TO DEATH in my bubble. It is insane. Use Armor of Light in PvP please. Unless you're playing against me. Then don't. I would suggest the suppressor grenade in PvP to shut down enemy supers and whatnot.

Been thinking of a PvP build for the longest time, I got used to and maxed out my Striker going through story and post 20, And use it mostly for Crucible now. My Defender is maxed and I try using it in PvE as much as I can but I went to see more of them in PvP. I have one in mind but have yet to test it out. Here's my build theory. Build focuses on discipline and strength. Equip armor to maximize these traits, but don't forget to have some intellect as well so you can still make good use of your Ward of Dawn. Have armor that come with perks that increase any of melee, grenade, or super dropdowns or weapons perks that fit your loadout. Between what skills I list below you have equipped you can function as a real tank that either causes you to become a high priority target and create openings for your teammates, or to function as a deterrent and ward off and strike down pairs of enemies at a time. The gear that is most important for this build is the Helmet of Saint-14. The Starless Night perk allows you to blind enemies within the Ward of Dawn. Reason why is because as this build is so defense heavy you can actually go into a group of enemies and cause mass confusion when you put it up. This can work EXTREMELY well if your team is well coordinated. If you are running solo when you do this you will still have a good chance of taking down enemies within by melee and shotgun combos. Enemies that rush out are easily pucked off as soon as they frantically run out. It's very likely that they will run in different directions. Please do note however that this is a high risk tactic; but with that risk comes big rewards. Keep with auto rifles with good range and rate of fire with shotguns that sport high impact and rate of fire. Spike Grenade; area control, ward off enemies and force them to take another route or to risk getting taken out by the blasts and possible suppression fire. Increased control for Lift; make use of both horizontal and vertical movement to gain a position advantage. Pair it with map knowledge to get the jump on your enemies. Blessing/Weapons of Light; Your preference. Choose to engage in firefights and live longer with the shield, or to maximize damage potential with the damage increase. War Machine/Unbreakable; also according to your preference. Choose to reload and aim fast to damage or suppress enemies, or to increase your lifespan just like Blessing of Light. Codex I; battle recovery and toughness increase. The longer you live, the longer you can dish out punishment. Relentless; increase the potential of Force Barrier with strength and duration , for the purpose mentioned above. Codec V; maximum recovery. I don't have to keep explaining. I hope. Untouchable; finally a Ward of Dawn ability. Faster cooldown. We won't have as much intellect and super points, but it's still a tool at your disposal with lots of potential. As mentioned before, this build involves high risk with high rewards. But if played right and accustomed to you'll become a rare breed within the Crucible. Don't rush, stay mid range and suppress with the auto rifle while moving forward and reserve the melee and shotgun combos for those that do get close. Hope you guys find this build interesting and try it out!

    • Interesting! Really close to a build I'm using in my titan. Monte Carlo Shotgun Heavy of your choice I took speed instead of recovery because force barrier is almost always active, so there is no need to recover(still need to upgrade my Monte Carlo for the reduce melee cooldown perk so that "almost" turns to "always"). And Blessing/Weapons of Light instead of the inside bubble shield, along with the increased benefits of those perks(Illumination I think?) Super fun build. I just wish the Titan's melee animation was a bit more epic. Too many right hooks. It'd be cool if they added a few more animations: left hook, uppercut, haymaker, etc. and you randomly got an animation.

Started my Titan with striker, needless to say, fully upgraded it, then decided to upgrade defender. Been playing that class ever since and never looked back! How do you defend against enemy striker titans? Other then the suppressor grenade? They can shut down the ward of dawn with fist of havoc.

              • I do this in VoG. Monte Carlo + No Backup Plans + Relentless + 80% Strength. I instantly recharge my Barrier as soon as it runs out, it's very easy to have infinite overshield with this setup. It's very difficult getting 100% Strength unless you got Iron Banner + Raid Gear with strength on it.

The ONLY reason I'm not still running that on my titan is ( up until this week when I got better raid boots and gauntlets) I like being 30 and this -blam!-ing game won't give me a -blam!-ing helmet. I bought no back up plans week 1 from xur and haven't worn them since week 1 of raid, now everyone will be looking just like me (soon enough, -blam!-ing raid) Up until you all I ever heard was how no back up plans are useless and I just thought to myself "ha, what a jackass" Damn interweb.

                        • I've been Titan since day one and I never maxed hunter because I've been so into my Titan defender. I went new monarchy early on and have all maxed new monarchy gear (unfortunately I need raid for 30). I always have all force barrier perks, Pvp: armor of light is must with that ward CD perk(that armor). Pve I can go blessing of light with illuminated. (Since helm saint 14 makes me godly in bubble anyways). Don't go no back up plans. Go helm 14 so u can free up armor perks an have blessing and illuminated in pve situations

                          • It sounds like a cool build but i think I would still prefer striker over defender. I see the defender bubble as a multi kill waiting to happen too many people have a false sense of security in that little bubble and more often than not I end up getting at least a double kill every time I attack 1

                            • You can more easily play much enemies to death when they are blinded by the Helm of Saint 14. Your force barrier won't last as long, but the blinding bubble will deter strong goes from killing hooker friends outside the bubble. Defender is not good for me pvp because the Striker has one hit kill shoulder charge and one hit multi-kill super abilities. Defender just can't compete.
