Thoughts on possible Thorn buffs and how to keep it balanced

Lots of ideas on how to buff Thorn have been flying around lately, some realistic and some...less so. I'm going to break the ideas down into categories and discuss how they could be improved, what should stay the same, and how they might work together. So far what I've seen for ideas fall into the following categories: reload speed, capacity, impact, damage over time, stability, and elemental damage. Let's go over them one at a time, and I'll provide what are, to me at least, realistic and plausible changes. Reload speed - Definitely infamous on Thorn for being slooooow. Go microwave yourself a bag of popcorn when that animation starts, you're gonna be there for a while. However, I think that it was intentional. Thorn isn't a spammer's weapon, it's about careful use of the shots you have. Therefore, I'd say a buff is warranted, but not to extreme levels. Maybe half the current speed at most. Capacity - Like reload speed, I feel like this is intentional to make you pace your shots. A small increase would be nice though, maybe bump it to around 7-9 shots. That, and I'd say either this or the reload buff, not both. Impact - some call for a bump to impact, but I say no. Impact isn't a weakness in Thorn, especially with DoT in PVP. It's a two shot kill with that extra damage and headshots. Leave this one be. Damage over Time - This one could use a tweak, but some are calling for it to stack, which would be overly powerful. Refresh on hit, however, I'm all for. It wouldn't be overpowered in PVP, and it would help in PVE where Thorn needs it the most. Stability - Very low stability, but manageable once you get used to it. Keep it as is, or very slight increase. Elemental Damage - Lately there's been a greater outcry to give Thorn void damage like it had in the beta. I feel like the straight addition of void damage would set it too far apart from existing primary exotics, none of which have elemental damage. If it were to have void, I'd say apply it only to the DoT. This would make no change to it's PVP effectiveness (where not nearly enough people acknowledge that it's actually quite effective), but make it more usable in PVE. As a final note that I've seen almost no one mention, I think one change that would be a huge help would be the replacement of the Final Round perk with something else. That perk has barely helped me in any situation, and even then only maybe once or twice. I'm not sure specifically what, but perhaps Crowd Control to help with mobs or increased reload speed after kill as an alternative to a reload buff. That's all, ladies and gentleman. If you couldn't tell, I don't think Thorn needs a huge buff. Just enough to push it into the realm of other exotics in terms of all around usefulness. Thoughts? Opinions? Lay 'me on me, Guardians.

  • In the right hands, thorn can be almost OP in pvp so I think bungie should go along the lines of the mythoclast in that maybe a few minor tweaks to pvp are warranted but as for pve goes, the weapons are pretty much worthless compared to many legendaries. So I propose larger buffs to thorn for pve and maybe some minor tweaks for pvp.
