i just got off the phone with a good friend of mine, and after countless hours dedicated to this game, he traded it in tonight for credit towards the new borderlands game. i would like to share his final destiny experience.
Vault of Glass on normal mode - 14th run through with the same 6 players
time from start to atheon spawn - 1 hour 14 minutes, including legit templar kill and smoke break at platforms
time to kill atheon - 47 minutes (two players had never been through the portals before tonight)
REWARDS FOR VoG - 7 ascendant shards, 6 ascendant energy, chatterwhite
no guns, no armor, no class item, no ship, no sparrow. upgrade materials and the same shader he received 13 other times. he told me his normal time for atheon was around 20 minutes, killing him legit and not pushing. that time was doubled due to the learning curve of the players who had never been through the portal. all in all, it took a little over two hours to get 13 shards/energy.
in that same amount of time, a player can run the daily event on its hardest difficulty, and do a public event for the first gold tier of the day, on 3 characters, and receive the same amount of upgrade materials. this can all be done solo without the need to wait for 5 others to be online and have the same dedicated amount of time as you do. if this was a rare occurance it would not be so bad, but between my friend and myself, we can document 5-7 legitimate atheon kills with nothing but upgrade materials for rewards. if this is supposed to be the hardest, most rewarding part of this game, it should have the most satisfying reward table. if the final boss fight continues to reward the same as a single public event or daily mission, then i can see many many more people following the path my friend took tonight... onto another game.

If he quit because he didn't get the gear he wanted that's pathetic. I don't play for gear "sure I like getting it but I play for the fun of playing with friends and the different funny moments. If you play just for gear you will be disappointed.
