Objective thoughts from 200+ hours of play time and about the future of Destiny...

I hope this comes across as sincere and legitimate as possible. So I'm not going to be one of those people that only lists negative things. I won't be "that guy." That being said, here's what the game does well: It looks great. It feels and handles great. The gunplay and movement feels fluid and is great once you get the hang of it. It's a fun and interesting universe that I really want to spend more time in and learn more about. The seamless transition of going from a public area where others are doing their thing into a mission area with your just fireteam works really well. Strikes and raids are fun when you have established a little group to do these things with. There are some very rewarding feeling moments when you complete some of the harder missions, like the nightfall strike and a raid. Outside of weapon balance issues, with what we currently have concerning the PvP, it is fun if you have a mostly full fireteam to play with. Now... concerning the level of hype and how this game was presented before release. I will try to do this in an as objective way as possible because I don't want to diminish the hard work and effort that everyone involved in the making of this game put into it. Plain and simple, it doesn't feel nearly as "big" as it was made it out to be. In my many hours of playing and meeting new people for strikes and raids, I have yet to come across a single person who plays this game regularly that doesn't seem to agree with this sentiment. It just honestly doesn't feel like there was enough content shipped initially to support the model and supposed vision they had for this game. Now for ways to improve the overall experience. First I'll just say that I think we need something as a show of good faith from the developers that isn't just vague comments about what's coming. Those do little quench our thirst for answers and any sort of hope we can cling to for the future of this game. There is such a thing as TOO much of an RNG system, and it feels like this game has found it. I have no way of knowing, but it comes across as a deliberate attempt to prolong active player numbers. It feels less like earning thingst, so therefore less rewarding, and more like some kind of combination of grinding and gambling. The list of suggestions: - A 6 person PvE fireteam mode that is not a raid. Surviving waves of enemies, higher level more linear patrols with specific intense sequences required to advance, something comparable to strikes, just... something. Preferably that adjusts itself as far as difficulty so that if you only have 4 or 5 people it isn't like trying to do the raid down a person. - Higher level patrols. - Farming upgrading materials feels sort of broken. It can only be done on low level patrols where killing enemies isn't worth it because they are so low level they barely upgrade anything so instead we basically run a looped pattern in an area collecting chests when they appear. Combatless acquisition of materials is lame, plain and simple. "Bundles" of materials as rewards for missions and completing a patrol mission and upgrade materials being scattered throughout the story missions and strikes is an example. - More customization of guardians, ships, sparrows and even weapons. Being able to apply shaders to all of those things and class armor. Facial hair, unlockable hairstyles and face paints, etc. - More patrol missions and public events. More randomness in general when on patrol. It doesn't feel alive enough out there. - More variance in bounties. Instead of restricting the amount of bounties available per day, limit the amount able to be completed per day and offer more options. If one wants to complete 12 bounties today but I don't want to play Crucible they should be able to. Introduce solo and group bounties. - A monthly event that is bigger in scale than the weekly events. I saw a thread a while back where someone mentioned defending the city from waves of enemies with a full fireteam. I love this idea as it reinforces the desperation of the scenario and the idea of it being "the last city." - Allow melee weapons as heavy weapons and they have a "charge limit" to replace ammo. The mechanics are already at least partly there because of the Sword of Crota mission. Many people really liked using that sword(myself included). - Capture the Flag in the Crucible. Or as I saw someone mention a while back, capture the sword. - If everyone in the party has already seen a cutscene, the fireteam leader should be able to skip it. It seems like the more information that gets released about this game and it's future, the more we feel the need to question things. Two underwhelming events that admittedly need tweaking. There are a lot of rumors about what things that were originally going to be in the game and the last year of development being rocky. Speculation aside, there are in fact several partially finished locked areas, some with collectibles. Then the reveal that DLC will have exclusive content AFTER people have already paid for it. Like I originally said, I think the majority of the community feels we need something as a sign of good faith. Not a whole new planet or enemy type or anything like that. Just something on the already existing planets that will keep things fresh for us. At the very least, we need to know that things are moving in a forward and positive direction for the future of the game. EDIT: In reference to things like the raid. If one has done it 7 times and not gotten a single piece of raid armor, it is TOO random. The level of effort that comes with finding competent players and the amount of time it takes to complete is too high to walk away from the raid for almost 2 months straight with nothing to show for it. For lack of a nicer way of saying it, that is just plain ridiculous. If there were several raids and several chances that would be one thing. But there are not. At the very least, it would be nice if once you get an item as a reward with a character, you do not get it again with that character. Three of the same sniper rifle does not feel rewarding considering what the raid is.

  • Thank you for your reasonable and thoughtful post. These are the issues that keep bothering me too, particularly the non-gameplay of patrols and materials. There are parts of the game I love, but it's pushing me away almost as hard.
