Atheon Random Teleports

The patch notes for this week suggest that Bungie have implemented their intended fix for the Atheon fight so that he teleports 3 random Guardians into the portal instead of the 3 farthest from him. This brings some interesting considerations for our strategy to beat him. General Considerations/Tips There are specific scenarios described later, but first here are some general thoughts and tips which have emerged over recent Raids and may now help us keep the odds in our favor. - The relic-bearer can Super Oracles in the portal to help everyone keep up. They should call this intention in advance "Supering the next one", so that the other Guardians know to take the opportunity to reload. - If Oracles seem to be taking an abnormally large amount of damage to down then return to orbit and restart the checkpoint as this seems to be a bug. - The relic-bearer can Jump-Slam (Jump, then Primary Fire) the last Oracle on Mars (to the right of the exit Portal). - Just before the last Oracle in any portal is attacked the relic-bearer should call "Last Oracle" to give those outside warning that Time's Vengeance is about to begin. - The relic bearer should use the Primary Fire (shield-bash) attack, while on the ground, to deal with Hobs in Mars/Left and Gobs in Venus/Right gates. - The relic bearer should use a Jump, Primary Fire (jump-slam) attack, followed by repeated Melee attacks against the Minotaur on Venus. This is not universally accepted, but I have an extremely high success rate with this strategy. - If the person deploying the Weapons of Light bubble is in the portal, they should be the first to exit, followed by the relic-bearer. - If you are placing the Weapons of Light bubble, it should be centered on the black crack at the end of the center platform closest to the entrance. - If you are not the relic bearer, keep your eyes on your target (Ahteon's critical hit spot!) during Time's Vengeance, and trust the relic-bearer to call the Split. - The relic-bearer should avoid calling out progress of the Time's Vengeance as this tends to cause people to look at the timer, rather than the target. - Split should be called three times "Split! Split! Split!" - If you think that we can finish Atheon with the extra couple of seconds that comes from not following the "Split" call, then call it decisively "No Split. Finish Him". - The Supplicants spawn near the middle stairs and move to the right portal and sync plate first. Then they move to the left. This should allow Guardians outside the portal to aim in the right general direction. - When you exit the right portal, turn right to find the center platform. When you exit the left portal, turn left. - If you run smoothly from the portal to the platform without pausing you will avoid Supplicant explosions most of the time. Specific Strategy Changes Outside Safe Spots What has changed: We don't know who will be teleported, so the normal pre-positioning of Guardians who do not have self-res will not guarantee they will not teleported. Why this is a challenge: Certain levels/classes can be overwhelmed outside the portal very easily unless they are pre-positioned in a safe spot. What we should do about it: Before the fight, make it clear who would need to be pre-positioned in a safe spot if they are not teleported, and ensure that everyone can reach and stand in those spots together within the window before the Timestream opens for the first time. We should not put any DPS on Atheon unless everyone is in position, as this will hasten the Timestream opening. Self-Res/Fireborn Warlocks Opening Portals What has changed: We used to deliberately keep a self-res capable Warlock (Sunsinger, Fireborn) outside the portal to stand on the Sync Plates and open the portals. We can no longer guarantee one will be available. Why this is a challenge: Opening the portals is a dangerous job. The self-res gave us some redundancy in the plan. What we should do about it: If there is no self-res Warlock, then send a level 30. If there is no level 30, then send a Titan with a Bubble. If there is no Titan with a bubble then send the Guardian with the highest armor (highest level first, then Titan, Warlock, Hunter, in that order). The call of who is going to open the portal should come directly after the call of the Portal. Be decisive "Got Portal". Once that has been called, even if wasn't the most appropriate Guardian that called it, then the other Guardians should focus their attention on clearing the relevant side. Keep communication about Supplicants concise and informative "Supplicants Right/Left Portal/Plate". The Split What has changed: With 3 random Guardians teleported there is no reason for anyone to go anywhere in particular at the end of the Time's Vengeance. Why this is a challenge: Six of us would be looking to cram into the Weapons of Light bubble. What we should do about it: Actually, this is going to make a marginally dangerous situation (hustling to the Weapons of Light bubble and the back of the room while under fire) a lot safer. The relic-bearer now calls "BUBBLE" instead of "SPLIT", and now on 1 second instead of 2 seconds, and the Titan redeploys his bubble over the group while they are in the last second of the relic Cleanse bubble. Nobody needs to move, and we gain precious seconds to reload or pop a synth! Level 30's Holding the Relic What has changed: With 3 random Guardians teleported there is no guarantee that a level 30 will be sent into the portal to hold the relic, unless the Fireteam contains at least 4 level 30 Guardians. Why this a challenge: Dropping the relic in the portal is a guaranteed wipe. The cooldown on the Cleanse is too long when a second Guardian picks it up to allow the remaining Guardian to clear the Oracles quickly enough. What we can do about it: If we have the option of 4 or more level 30's, we should take it, even if it means running the last phase of Atheon multiple times by reloading the checkpoint in order for people to juggle their characters in and out. This will be the least painful way of clearing Atheon. If we have less than 4 level 30's, any time a level 30 gets teleported they should pick up the relic. My proposal is that any level 30 that gets sent declares "30 Sent", which we will take to mean that they will pick up the relic. That person should also take responsibility for calling the portal side, to keep communications clear and concise. For example, "30 Sent, Right Portal". If there is a level 30 on the relic, the normal protocols apply (on Venus, the non-relic Guardians beat up the minotaur as much as possible before the first Oracle spawn. On Mars/Left, the non-relic Guardians stay back from the top of the stairs to avoid the Hobs' shots until the relic bearer calls the all-clear). If NO level 30 gets sent then we have to play a slower game in the portal. It is still possible to clear the portals, but it requires care and patience. If you do not hear a "30 Sent" call, immediately grab the relic, then take responsibility for calling the portal side. If you are on Mars/Left, the relic bearer should move down the right of the stairs, keeping the small pillars between themselves and the Hobs. One Guardian should call "Got Hobs" and put one shot into each of the Hobs starting from the right to the left. This will armor-lock the Hobs to prevent them shooting the relic-bearer on approach, and they will come out of armor-lock in the order that the relic-bearer reaches them. If you are on Venus/Right, all players should attack the Minotaur. If a player has quick-use high damage attacks (Grenades/Rockets/Golden Gun/Nova Bomb) they should call "Got Relic", then use those attacks on the Minotaur/Adds, then grab the relic. The relic bearer should not engage the Minotaur unless it is absolutely necessary (i.e. it's at the top of the stairs). The other Guardians should put damage into the Minotaur any way possible, breaking away to down the first Oracle, then immediately returning their attention to the Minotaur until it is dead. The relic bearer can then clear up the remaining Adds. Weapons of Light Bubble What has changed: It may be that the person who would normally deploy the Weapons of Light defender bubble on the back of center platform is engaged holding the relic. This would occur if they were the only level 30 sent through the portal. Why this is a challenge: Without the Weapons of Light bubble for the Time's Vengeance phases we lose protection before and after the Relic Cleanse shield is active. In addition, we lose overall DPS on Atheon for those phases. What we can do about it: If the relic-bearing Titan cleanses the portal team just before the last two Oracles, then drops the relic as the last Oracle is destroyed, then the relic can be swapped to another member of the portal team without any loss of time. If this doesn't work out, then we need to make it clear that there will be "No Bubble" at the end of Time's Vengeance, and "SPLIT" will be called by the relic bearer on 2 seconds. Running and jumping for the back of the room is the best bet, but you need to get your feet on the ground before the Timestream opens or the Detain bubble will form on you in mid-air and kill you if you are not sent.
