  • Dear everyone at Bungie- For a long time now -- maybe since the story arc in Halo CE, actually -- it's been my belief that we are currently living through a time that will be viewed in the future as the period during which video games gained widespread recognition as Art (capital "A" intended). If you briefly look into the history of the novel as a literary form, you will see remarkable parallels. When the "first" novel was written (it's debatable what this was), the form was rejected largely because it was not poetry or drama. Now, obviously, novels are considered a legitimate art form. A similar process occurred with film, I believe. The point here is not generally that video games can be art -- most people reading this would probably find that proposition rather unprofound. The point is that some, very rare games -- like some, very rare novels and films -- can be High Art, masterpieces that advance human in a significant way. Or so I believe, I'm sure others may not. What does this have to do with Destiny? Well, for me, it's this: I love Destiny. I enjoy playing it, I love the experience of it, and I love the painstaking aesthetic that is so apparent in the game. But most of all, I love the game not for what it is, but for what it could be. Because -- as I know you realize, and as others have pointed out -- it's not a completed work yet. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the game's PvE elements. And this is a critical point, because the PvE side provides the narrative spine of the game. That's where the soul of the art that is Destiny must come from. Without a fleshed-out story, and a fuller gameplay experience of that story, Destiny is a shell -- a beautifully rendered one, but a shell nonetheless. I won't presume to tell you how it should be done. I think that would ruin the artistic process. I will say in general terms, however, that more story, more variability in the gameplay portions of the current story components, and more in the way of "side quests" that imbue Destiny with greater depth, would be good things to focus on. Let me be clear -- I'm actually grateful that Destiny is in such an unfinished form, because the experience of watching the bungie team tweak and add to it is essentially like being in the artist's studio. That's pretty cool, to me. And I want this post to be take as it is intended, that is, as constructive criticism. I love this game (I work 60-80 hours a week, but look at my playtime stats for proof). I want it to be the artistic watershed it can be, and I will stick with it until you guys quit. Thanks for your efforts.
