I've been giving shaders some thought, and I've got an idea that will allow Bungie to repurpose them and give us the customization control we've had in the past. Shaders are nice. They offer a palette that can change the color scheme of our armor. But we've seen better customization in he past. They really don't serve the purpose of customizations as much as piece-by-piece armor customization would serve. The way I see it, the best option is the following:
Change shaders to apply patterns, logos, and decals, and build an armor customization interface. This will allow us to repurpose the shaders instead of throwing them out. You would still get them the same way you got them before, but instead of the Achilles shader simply changing colors, it would apply more detail to your armor. For example, with Achilles, it could add battle scars and damage to your armor. If you reach rank 3 in Dead Orbit, you get a shader that applies cool Dead Orbit symbols and logos to your armor. Uncommon shaders would have more bland, simple decals and markings, while legendary ones would be more detailed and flashy.
As for the armor customization interface, I realize this could take a long while to implement. I'd give it a year tops. It seems like a good amount of time, and since part of the DLC seems to be finished already, it shouldn't be hard to churn out. Have the outfitter fill this role, since they do so little as it is. All the armor that changes color with a shader is clearly tagged in that mechanism, so we know exactly what can be changed in terms of color. Throw up a digital palette and you're good to go (I know it's not that simple, but the pieces are there).
