My review of Destiny

Bungie, here is my review and feedback of your game. As a disclaimer, it goes from negatives to positive just so the most constructive items are at the beginning but the bottom line is I’ve not been obsessed with a game like this for quite some time. Criticisms: These are some areas when I first started that had me thinking ‘WTF?’ as I was playing. - Story. I know it’s been beaten to death but in a world where the dead are brought back to life let’s just make sure there is no light left in this one. I gave up on the story around the end of the Moon, where I was supposed to go to Venus for something. Now, after reading someone’s post on here and reading the Grimoire the story came together and in hindsight was rather interesting. But my first play I was basically leveling and hit 20 and never finished the story because I didn’t care because it was not told well. Don’t get me wrong, I liked Dinkblebot (like Cortana) but it needed more filler, and an in game codex for it to come together. Also, this was an ‘origins’/ set up story. I didn’t know this and expected a tale to be told and ended. I imagine this is how my dad felt when he yelled ‘Are you f-ing kidding me’ after watching the first LOTR and not realizing it’s a trilogy. - Content. I was nervous and kind of let down when my brother (I was out of town at launch and unable to play) let me know he had beaten all content and reached level 20 over the weekend of playing. Maybe I had unrealistic expectations but I expected more content the way the game was advertised. - Uninspired mission variety. Go here. Defend 3 waves of enemies and a boss while Ghost reads a terminal. Repeat. Destiny 2 / DLC needs to iterate and have more variety (thinks Assassins Creed to AC2). - Lore. Similar to story. More meat behind this world. Its beautiful, but kind of lifeless and many stories untold. Enough said on this topic. - Chat system. So I join a strike and can’t talk with people. I run a public event and can’t talk to people. I go to the “social area” the tower and can’t talk to people. No proximity chat. No text chat. I continue to not be a fan of this design choice as it does lend itself to meeting people in your game unless I invite every random person I meet to my fireteam and hope he or she is cool. - PVP. I was going to include this in the Quality of Life improvements but it is a criticism for me mainly because of my personal tastes. I knew going in this would not be in PVP but I’m listing because games need to start including this more (Rainbow Six Siege and H-Hour). I’m about to reveal that I’m old at the age of 29 but ‘back in the day’ respawn games were the unranked gametypes where you went to practice your aim so you could play the real game. OBJECTIVE, 1 LIFE PER ROUND, TACTICAL, OBJECTIVE BASED MULTIPLAYER. Put a freaking gametype like this in. No supers. No Heavy Ammo. Limited Special or No Special. Mainly you, your gun, a grenade, and your team against the other team. Your nightfall strikes and heroic strikes are awesome because dieing has real consequence and builds tension. This absent in PVP because dieing has little consequence. Oh well, I died, run around and shoot, die, repeat. I know there is more to it than that but that is how I feel playing respawn more than a few games. Quality of Life Improvements This section did not detract from my experience but are improvements I would like to see in the game or when designing Destiny 2 - Increase the immersion. After hitting the level cap and being everywhere. I love having the mission select, and the strike playlists and the like. But when I’m playing the first time, I want to be travelling to my objective and seeing the world, not being teleported to outside the respawn zone. It makes it feel a little disjointed. I would much prefer to stay on the moon and move from mission to mission within the same game rather than being taken back to orbit and selecting the next mission. Let the player unlock the quick select and strike playlist after he’s beaten the game or something, or give the option to play this way for players who enjoy it. Most likely a Destiny 2 implementation I would think. - Have a no revive option for the nightfall. You die? You’re dead. End of story. Nightfall continues with two or not at all. - Custom armor upgrade slots. Have certain slots be custom but permanent upgrades. It lets you customize your armor for abilities that enchance your own style of play and now when I get two of the same I might want to keep it so I can upgrade it differently. - LVL based patrols. Similar to the strike playlist. When I select patrol let me choose a lvl 28 patrol with harder enemies when I go to cosmodrone. It would be far more rewarding than mindlessly shooting stuff while I get my 6 patrols done. - Increase the bounty mission variety. Harvesting bounties. Different kill style bounties. Airborne kills. Sliding kills. Jumping off your speeder airborne rocket launcher multi kills. Anything. - **PVP patrols. Include a gametype in crucible that is a pvp patrol. You loadup 12 people or preferably 24 into a patrol with an alpha and bravo team. They each have a goal whether it be a number of patrols to complete or whatever, but pvp is enabled and the other team can stop you from completing your patrol. If you die your patrol is failed and you have to start over. This would be epic and awesome. I’m bolding this because I want it in the game the more I think about it and it seems doable.** - Give me something to spend my glimmer on. Resource materials, gear, marks, anything. It does nothing other than buy a crap ton of ammo. - I haven’t even completed the raid yet but I am a fan of Raid Marks for a currency. At least that way if RNGesus doesn’t bless you can at least save up and buy some gear with the marks. - Open up the world in the next game so there aren’t zones that I blow up if I go into. - Trade system. Enough said. - Transmute system. I need the raid gear to get to 30. But this level 18 mask or whatever is sweet. Let me customize it. I don’t really care about this but many do. - I’m sure there are more but I’m drawing a blank. Things You did Right - The light system. In every other level based game, I never understood the point of getting gear for its own sake. This game has turned me into a maniacal loot gatherer because I actually need gear to level up and I love it. I love it. - Gun Mechanics. It is incredibly satisfying to kill stuff in your game. - Graphics, art and world design. You have built a beautiful world. The armor looks great. The backgrounds are awesome. I mean I looked up into the moon sky yesterday and saw the satellite debris and was blown away. - Bounties. Heroics. Dailies. Public Events. Nightfalls. Raids. Gathering Materials. Upgrading weapon and armor. There is always something to do or needs doing. It makes replaying the content still satisfying because I’m preparing for something more. - Fun and challenging. These two go hand and hand for me. It’s the only reason I play games is to have some fun and be challenged. You deliver in this way in spades. It is incredibly fun to log onto your game every free chance I get and play with friends. Its fun to play the nightfall and know if I run out into the open without thinking twice I’m a deadman. I’ll continue playing your game until I stop having fun and its not a challenge anymore. Bottom Line: This is funnest game I’ve played in a long time. Even though my criticisms initially above almost made me not want to even to give the game a chance, it still succeeds in delivering a very enjoyable experience on a daily basis.
