I have used Thorn religiously since I acquired it, and I have completely upgraded it, energy and all. It needs a buff. I don't want it to be OP, I just want it to be comparative to Hawkmoon and TLW. I'm going to go through each of Thorn's stats and perks to give a thorough piece of feedback.
RoF: This is perfect how it is. The high rof makes body shots viable when your opponent gets the jump on you, and you don't have time to aim for the head. Also useful when breaking shields and/or minotaurs.
Impact: A little low for a high level HC, although DoT is supposed to make up for that.
Range: Okay, Send It is supposed to help, I'll get to that in a second
Stability: Not as bad as one may think, once you adjust to it, it feels like standard recoil
Reload: Atrociously slow. Even with reload gauntlets. Increase this by about 13 (yes, the bars actually have corresponding numbers. Check the app)
Magazine: 6 is pretty low, although I think it'll be okay if reload is improved and my Mark suggestions are used.
Total ammo: Thorn seems to have less reserve ammo than even other Hand Cannons, which is unfortunate, because it tends to burn ammo pretty quickly.
Ballistics: All personal choice, not much to say here
Last Round: Currently, this doesn't feel like a perk, it feels like an apology for having such a small magazine. Increase reload speed and this has a reason for use.
Choice Slot:
• Snapshot - kinda useless on a primary. Specials are usually the weapons you're drawing in a tight situation, and both of the other perks offer more utility
• Send It - a great perk on other Hand Cannons, but only okay on Thorn. Thorn's base range is higher than a lot of HCs, but that also means you don't get the full boost of Send It. I say give us the full boost, or just give us rangefinder.
• Perfect Balance - gives a massive boost to stability, which is a boon to whoever needs it. However, increasing range, especially for PvE, is always my number 1 goal.
Mark of the Devourer:
Thorn's signature perk. A great perk, although it needs some tweaking. First of all, I believe the impact on Thorn is less than most HCs because it is intended for the mark to make up for the difference. This is fine, until you realize that it only applies to the first shot, and then the rest of your bullets are neutered until the timer runs out. I have 2 options to solve this:
1) Each shot renews the timer. This is ideal. It would allow Thorn to reach higher potential, without becoming overpowered.
2) Since 'Devourer' implies that we are absorbing something of the enemy, let us be healed by the same amount of damage the DoT does. In PvP, it would be just like the damage, 6 or 7 for body and headshots. In PvE, it could use those same numbers, since it's a percentage of your health. It could have a stack limit of 1, to prevent users from
turning mob groups into health packs.
Additionally, change Thorn's DoT to poison. I know it exists in game, because I've received it from the hive, which Thorn is connected to already. It just doesn't make sense for an incendiary grenade and a cursed weapon to be doing the same type of damage.
Thanks for reading, and hopefully I gave you some usable ideas, or at least points to consider.

I will catch some comments for this but o well. The thorn is great the way it is. The only thing I would like to see is the mark do little more damage. The only reason I say that is because its the main perk for it and don't really seem to work well. It is the perfect gun for the hunter with the gun slinger class on. That class is why I believe it is harder for the hunter to get this gun. I use it 90 percent of the time on missions. You get that slinger stacked and it changes. I am getting 1479 damage for a head shot and that wasn't the last bullet! Its like having a mini sniper in your hand. The last word is a hand gun for the people that like to run and gun. The thorn is for players that make each shot count!

For those who haven't yet to obtain a THORN. You can easily solo the Summoning part of the bounty! When you get to phogoths front door knock twice until the door opens, run inside uninvited and make a huge clockwise loop to get all the enemies to register then come back to the front door and snipe out all the knights in your way. When you clear out all the knights, brake in to the house again making another clockwise loop and kill all the acolytes and wizards and needless to say annoying thralls. Shoot rockets, fusions and throw grenades to take down Phogoths health and when he gets to a certain point of his health he will call 911 and ship will come. Repeat process until the 3rd ship come then invite Xyor the Unwed to a date and spice her drink to poison her to death! :)

Thorn I agree is shit for pve BUT it is a great gun for PVP I think we should just accept its not meant for raids just like shotguns aren't. Thorn in skilled hands will outgun any weapon even a heavy machine gun if you headshot twice and take cover for the poison

Edited by TheDeathMantle: 11/25/2014 3:59:38 AMI agree for most of it but I really like usering send it I get incredible range with a HC SO YEA and for PvP tick damage needs to go back to 7 not 3 and definitely faster reload more ammo in clip and overall damage buff it feels so weak compared to normal HC in PvP it was fine till the next but now it the worst HC ever in pve.
-
I agree whole heartedly. Thorn needs something. Void and poison damage seems nice, but definitely reload speed sucks, make it as fast as other hand cannons.
-
it should either have much higher impact or have dot stacking. still nothing compensates an atrocious reload speed, even with my hunter chain of woe. the only thing that can justify small mag is higher dmg to assure a kill in 1-3 shots which almost never happens.
-
You know I'd like the buff to have the DoT to stack with each round you fire at the enemy,

Edited by DustlnTheWind: 10/22/2014 11:53:01 PMAs someone who has used Thorn extensively in PVP and PVE I have two suggestions. 1. Make the DoT reset with each shot landed 2. Increase reload speed to a level comparable or better than similar legendary hand cannons (The Devil You Know and Lord High Fixer) I think the 6 shot mag is fine and actually makes the Last Round perk slightly more useful. Speaking of the Last Round perk, I’ve had the perk trigger numerous times with 5,4,3, or 2 bullets left in the chamber so it might be bugged. It seems like it works like the Holding Aces perk seen on Hawkmoon at times. Constructive criticism!

I must agree with everything. If they don't allow Thorns poison to be re-applied per shot. (As I feel it should be) Then they should provide a form of "Weakness" to whoever is suffering from the Original shot. This Weakness could make the target take increased damage by a percentage from all sources while afflicted with "Mark of The Devourer". But I would prefer that Mark of the Devourer consumed health from targets per tick. Or even more applicable, that it steals small percentages of their Super Gauge per Tick. Symbolizing it absorbing and devouring the Light Source of other foes.
-
I think they should bump the mag up to 8 and increase the reload speed to about the same as lord high fixer

-
Well, now not only do we have to keep waiting for the Thorn buff to come to fruition, we have to wait for them to reverse the nerf it and many other exotics were given in the latest patch.
-
Make the dot stack up to a cap...
-
-
I've used Thorn a lot. For Thorn to be the gun it should be without being overpowered it needs an additional 1-2 rounds in the magazine or/and reload speed faster (I mean seriously I even have the gauntlets to increase hand cannon reload and thorn reload is so slow).
-
Bump I never use it because I have a couple of Rare hand cannons that put Thorn to shame unfortunately :-(
-
truee
-
I could take these changes? Especially the dot refresh. That's seems the more important thing Imho.
-
How about the fact that Thorn is HUGE? I can barely see the person I'm shooting at!
-
I'm glad this is still kicking. I'll add this: it's ironic that Thorn is actually a great anti-Hive weapon. It can multi-kill Thralls, counters Knights' regeneration, and makes wizards visible through their smoke cloud.
-
Thorn has more impact than the last word.
-
Three shot kill... sounds pretty equal to the others to me.
-
Keep it out of pvp
-
I agree on the the timer being reset and the reload speed being faster this gun would be perfection. I don't think it should heal you though maybe if you get the kill your health instantly regenerates instead of getting healed constantly by the dot. But yeah they should make these changes soon because this game is becoming harder to play as the weeks go on.
-
I'm really sorry about this, but... I agree with everything you just said!
