Why do people insist on party chat instead of game chat?

I prefer party chat

I'm probably missing something, so help me out. When someone joins my game, they will sometimes send a message or something to join party chat. What's the point? I can hear you just fine in game chat, and I don't want to hear other people that may be in the party but not the game anyway. And with game chat, I can see peoples' names at the bottom of the screen so I know who is talking, which is VERY helpful in Raid communication. So, why do some people still insist on party chat?

  • If someone gets booted out of fireteam they can still talk to you and let you know what happened and when they are coming back

  • I've noticed lots of issues with the game chat. I've had times where all but one person can be heard, or player 1 can hear players 3 and 5 while player 2 can only hear 5 and 6. I, and several of my friends, have also noticed audio issues within the games music or sound effects while using game chat, but not while using party chat. I played the VoG the other night with no gunfire sounds from the vex (except for explosions).

    • because as much as this game fails in other ways, this social game fails possibly the most at being social. It's chat system SUCKS.

    • I prefer Party Chat.. When a member all the sudden drops out of the game or you all the sudden drop out of a game you can still communicate with your team.. Gotta love those animal error codes..

    • Game chat is unreliable. The only reason I need to not use it.

    • With the amount of times someone in my party gets DCd, party chat is great for staying in communication until they can rejoin the fireteam. In every raid I've done and most of the full Crucible teams I've played on, someone always gets booted. Plus, I find Destiny's chat to be intermittently broken. When Destiny improves their side of the online gaming, I'd use in game chat more. Until then, party chat wins, hands down.

    • Because if bungies shitty servers boot you.. Then you can still communicate and let the party know your coming back.

      • I have found party chat to fail more than in-game recently, but I do understand the benefit of both. If my fireteam is doing the same thing (raid for example) I prefer the in-game 10 times over. If we are each doing different things, than party chat works. Though, some people's connection types don't like party chats.

      • I can actually hear people in party chat. When I switch to game chat the volume goes way down for some reason. Plus we all don't have to be in the same fireteam to talk to each other. I can be farming relic iron on mars and a guy on Venus gets public event, he can let me know and I can try to jump to his fireteam before it's over. It's just a lot more flexible.

      • For me, because I use a headset for game audio and chat. In game chat gives far too much sound weight to the game, meaning if I am using in game chat, I cannot hear anything you are saying whenever somebody is shooting/something is exploding. Party chat lets me control the balance of game audio to chat audio.

        • It's a lot clearer. Gamechat sounds like your tryna communicate through a cheap walky talky.

        • very good point with the raid, being able to see names. the only time i hate party chat is when theres 10 people in a 6 person "raid party" chat.

Sometimes the game chat doesn't work correctly for the people I play with and so we switch to party chat until it actually works again.

          • When destiny (eventually) kicks someone out of my fireteam for no reason, I like hearing the guy say either "im coming back" or "I rage quit" instead of constantly guessing.

            • Honestly it's because in party chat you can focus on the party chat more then the game noise. If the game let you turn down the "pew pew" sound effects so you could more easily hear party members it'd be no big deal. I have a fancy headset so I can do that in game but a lot of people can't.

              • Because I like being able to EDIT THE VOLUME of the game I'm playing, and in order to hear my party members Im required to use a Psn party because it can lower the ingame volume and make it much easier to hear my party members. Why the hell didnt they put an audio option in for destiny. Jesus.

Because there are no volume options in the game and there are in party chat. That's why.

                • It's the additional functionality of a Party, not the chat that makes people gravitate towards Party Chat, but judging by the number of people saying this already, I'm guessing you now understand hopefully?

                  • Some people like it because its easier to invite everyone in the game/party incase they leave or disconnect but i do prefer game chat as you can see whos talking if you dont know the people who your playing with

                  • Like people have stated, when someone gets booted off the game for whatever reason I want to know if they rage quit (left the party too) or just got disconnected. Nothing worse than having to wait on someone not knowing if they're even coming back or not.
