We are the bad guys...

Doing today's Daily, I never picked up on this before. Just before the Stranger leaves she says; "Everyone needs to pick a side, even if it's the wrong one.". I always assumes she meant herself. But when she said it, she looked at us...

I picked up on that too, it is sometimes easy to gloss over given that she was just talking about the Awoken and their lack of an alliance a moment earlier. This post got a lot longer than I anticipated it would, if you have some time and are interested I've outline a theory below: The idea that maybe we're not fighting for the right side is also implied in the grimoire card that talks about the different city factions - last couple of lines about heretical views where some hold that the traveler caused the collapse or at least knew that the Darkness was coming and looked to use us as a proxy army against it. If the traveler is the force of good that we're lead to believe it is then what would either of those heretical views mean for the credibility of the Speaker/Traveler if they were true? If you look at the Destiny story and consider it from all angles perhaps the opinion that many have voiced on these same forums will change from "there is no story/the storytelling is really bad" to "hey, maybe the information is being kept from our guardian on purpose - maybe we're being duped/used." I mean think of it from the perspective of Bungie/Activision - they worked on this game for 5 years and in all of the interviews/sneak-peaks they were clearly excited about it.. now unless you think that either of these companies are incompetent to the degree of forgetting to include a story to go along with this game then you have to at least have questions as to why the story in Destiny 'seems' to be lacking. Now I've read the conspiracy theory(s) that would suggest that Activision being the evil, money-grubbing corporation - leveraged the contract they have with Bungie to force them to gut the story and sell it to us in pieces. A couple of points: Activision doesn't own Bungie. Let that sink in. If they owned Bungie and could close the studio for not performing to Activision's satisfaction then perhaps.. just maybe that theory would have something to it. Both Activision and Bungie want this game to be a success.. and you don't have to look far for a reason, the reason is money. If Activision really had Bungie gut the story to sell it to us in pieces do you really think that having little to no story in the first release is a good way to hook players into paying for more? Would you do that if you were a publisher? I mean does it even make any kind of business sense without the backing of an existing franchise to try and exploit? So unless you completely disagree with the above logic.. If we (our guardians) are being duped/used I think it would add a lot of depth to a game that clearly hints at something much more. If, in fact, we are on the wrong side or more probably a wrong side in this fight (many factions that don't mind killing each other.. not exactly a unified enemy), I think it would be huge and really gives Bungie some cool options with where they take us as "Legends". Take a look at the details: Guardians are raised from the dead, not recruited from the city - we have no memory of what came before and are pressed into service immediately - very much a 'be a good soldier and don't think too hard' situation. We aren't given the opportunity to ask questions, we're preempted with half-explanations that have missions tacked onto the end of them. We're told a 'history' that is little more than a flowery story with very little in the way of 'how or why', a story in which that the Traveler came hundreds of years ago to ignite a golden age for humanity before an enemy came to wipe us out and that the Traveler sacrificed itself to save us. We (our guardians) don't know that any of that 'history' is true - all we do know for sure is what we can see around us: Humanity did reach for the stars and colonize the solar system, we did have advanced technology but can we be sure the Traveler arrived before all that? What about the Reef? If humanity was being threatened by a force that surrounded us (as implied by the graphic on the intro movie) why would every ship that could, flee away from earth if that meant going straight into the thing that threatened us? How convenient that all of those ships just happened to die 'at the farthest edge of where the light touches' or perhaps a better way to phrase that would be 'at the edge of the Traveler's influence'. What if the 'history' is a convenient story that we're told to get us out on the front lines in defense of an agenda that we're being kept in 'the dark' about? (pun intended) What if the 'history' is bits of truth surrounded by lies? Food for thought

    • I feel bad murdering 10,000 of fallen everyday, they are even threatening me or the city, they aw just scavenging! If it turns out that the traveler is actually evil then this story would be saved! That is a flip!

    • Interesting comments in this thread about what side we're on - I decided to read some of the Grimoire and saw this about "The Black Garden"
I am Pujari. These are the visions I have had of the Black Garden. The Traveler moved across the face of the iron world. It opened the earth and stitched shut the sky. It made life possible. In these things there is always symmetry. Do you understand? This is not the beginning but it is the reason. The Garden grows in both directions. It grows into tomorrow and yesterday. The red flowers bloom forever. There are gardeners now. They came into the garden in vessels of bronze and they move through the groves in rivers of thought. This is the vision I had when I leapt from the Shores of Time and let myself sink: I walked beneath the blossoms. The light came from ahead and the shadows of the flowers were words. They said things but I will not write them here. At the end of the path grew a flower in the shape of a Ghost. I reached out to pluck it and it cut me with a thorn. I bled and the blood was Light. The Ghost said to me: You are a dead thing made by a dead power in the shape of the dead. All you will ever do is kill. You do not belong here. This is a place of life. The Traveler is life, I said. You are a creature of Darkness. You seek to deceive me. But I looked behind me, down the long slope where the blossoms tumbled in the warm wind and the great trees wept sap like blood or wine, and I felt doubt. When my Ghost raised me from the sea there was a thorn-cut in my left hand and it has not healed since
The question of good/bad and which side were on is defintley going to be raised again in Destiny I feel.

            • She was talking about the Awoken, as she muses about how they are constantly 'wavering between the light and the dark' right before she says this.

            • Idk if you've seen the leaked raid gear from Crota's End but it's definitely not something I feel like a good guy would wear. The Titan helmet is called willbreaker's watch and it's engraving is "their howls of terror mark your arrival"

            • In the reddit stuff which was supposedly an unofficial Q&A with a dev making back channel comments on the game a very different story was apparently the basis for the game. It was quite unclear what this was but the speaker / Queens Brother etc were quite central and their role as good / evil not clear. It is possible that this story or something similar MAY still be part of our future. Quite an interesting possibility.,

            • I know this scene. She makes another statement worthy of being noted "But I believe, where our paths cross ground could break." Clearly, we stand on opposite sides of the fence. I think the lines between good and evil are going to become very blurry in the future. This is a perfect setup for Destiny to become a standout game. If and when that line becomes visible, players could, then, have an opportunity to choose which side they stand on. That would lend credence to the feeling that the game we have access to so far is just a tutorial. It would also add so much more to the total depth of the title. I'm eager to see what will happen.

              • There are several Grimoire cards that vaguely suggest that the traveler brought the darkness and bring doubts about trusting it. I think it would be an awesome plot twist

              • Could be... I personally think she meant The Awoken Queen (they seem to lean more towards The Darkness, she even rolls with The Fallen House Of Wolves -- though they seem to equally hate The Vex, which is prob the only reason she helped us. Later she gives us a mission to take out The House Of Winter Archon, not because she's against The Fallen, but because they oppose her own Fallen House... which means she is thoroughly involved in their world and their politics... sounds like The Wrong Side to me, lol...)

              • I think the Queen is the next big addition to the game. From the grimoire card, she says "Starlight was my mother; and my father was the dark.". It also states that she is the head of the Fallen House of Wolves. Of course, the DLC is - House of Wolves. So the question is, will the Queen be invading, or will the Reef be the next battleground? I think that the stranger works for another faction, Exos who have remained apart and will form a part in the third chapter of the game.

Say Destiny becomes like WoW and the guardian must choose wether to be with the Light or Rebel/Darkness and the Light would keep the Tower while the Rebel/Darkness would have their own base and Cruicble would always be players from Light vs the Rebels

                • It could be just going against the speaker's wishes. Guardians I'm guessing are meant to be pure and good where as the stranger probably does what it takes to win even if it is unethical because it is for survival

Yeah... I personally think the traveller created the darkness and that is why it was important to say "the vex are so dark they hate other darkness" We trust the traveller because of what it showed us about space travel, but honestly what do we really know about it. We trust it because we met it first. The cabal just fight they seem to love war The hive tried to channel a shard from the traveller. Why would they want light? They are all about darkness. The vex are evil so they hate other darkness The fallen could be the good guys... It makes sense that they would all fight eachother there is more than 2 sides in a fight sometimes. The vauge terms of light and dark make it seem like good and bad. But just because someone wears black does not mean they are the bad guy anymore. The last universe bungie created brought the primary alien race into a playable character as allies! They may have set it up this way again.
