A comparison between Exotics I've found and Legendaries (W/ Good Perks). This only applies to Weapons.
Exotics:
Hard light x2
Red Death
MIDA Multi-Tool
SUROS Regime
Thorn
Icebreaker
Truth
Legendaries W/ Good Perks:
Bad Seed Down-Headseeker, Field Scout, Play and Spray
I'm coming to the conclusion exotics are far overhyped. A balanced legendary surpasses most exotics in both gameplay and "cool-factor".
I'd like to see some engram-based legendaries w/ good perks you guys have.

I will agree that many Exotics do not have abilities that make them worth the "Exotic" title. The cool-factor though, all Exotics I have seen look bad-ass and the legendary gun models match the rares most of the time. So I would disagree with "Cool-factor" as they look cool but agree many are not that amazing gameplay wise.

I still dont own an exotic. i got 3 level 24s. got a few legendaries though,

i love my shadow price. kills restore grenades, really damn useful that was an engram lol

The whole gear rarity system is broken. While there are officially five tears there are really six: Basic, Uncommon, Rare, Legendary, Exotic and Raid. But because of the ill conceived restriction to one piece of Exotic armour and one Exotic weapon Bungie had to classify Raid armour as Legendary to allow people to reach level 30. This unbalance is most clearly visible with primary weapons: no Exotic primary weapon has elemental damage except Vex Mythoclast which really belongs in the Raid gear category. As a result none of the Exotic primaries can beat Atheon's Epilogue in killing Praetorians or beat Vision of Confluence in killing Centurions. I've collected four Exotic weapons so far. Suros Regime and Patience and Time are mediocre and Pocket Infinity is bad (I only got it after the ill conceived nerf). The only exception is Icebreaker which is truly outstanding.

Well I have the only exotic that's a rate drop the Vex Mythoclast 😀
-
Some of the rares are better than half of the exotics thou. :p
-
The categories have nothing to do with quality/strength. They're associated with probability of drop.
-
I think a system where exotic armor was available via drops, and exotic weapons were ONLY available via bounties that Xur sold exclusively, would have been a pretty cool system. However I think it's pretty clear what they are doing - at some point soon, before the December DLC, they will let players equip full exotic gear in order to bump up their level past 30 (the DLC raid is level 32, I believe). Whether they add an additional level of rarity at that point (epic?) will be interesting.

Exotics are to Legendaries as Navy SEALS are to infantry. Exotics have an extra perk which allow them to be incredibly versatile while legendaries are the work horse of Destiny
-
Too bad some of those exotic weapons don't have bounties
-
Exotics are just situational specific weapons with a fun perk. Legendaries are for getting work done.
