There are a lot of things that people are complaining about with Destiny, but I'd like to step away from the usual complaints about gameplay and connection issues, and talk about Exotic gear. Also after you all read this post, I'd like to know your opinion of Xur and Exotic gear. Destiny is not like the FPS titles we are sued to. It is not another Call of Duty, it is not another Halo, you all get the point. What is wrong about how Destiny works as a loot based game is that it is easier to get Exotic (currently the highest tier of armor and weapons in the game) are easier to obtain than Legendary gear. The main problem is Xur, here the problem will be broken down, and I’ll provide insight with how to fix it. Xur: Everyone’s favorite vendor. When Xur first showed up in the tower, I thought it was pretty cool to have someone selling Exotic gear. At first, I really didn’t pay too much attention to the problems he would cause. On a Thursday night, I was playing crucible when I was killed by the SUROS Regime. I thought it sounded so cool that I inspected the player, and it was an Exotic. I thought the gun was really interesting, and that I needed to have it. 12 hours later, everyone was using the gun because they had 23 Strange Coins lying around. Then, this weekend, he sold the Icebreaker. Xur is a game-breaking problem. You may not think so, but think about this. Let’s take World of Warcraft or Runescape (they were the most popular loot based games I could think of off the top of my head) for example. To get the best gear, you have to play the game for hours and hours with friends, going around, killing high level enemies, and after a long struggle, achieve these weapons. In NO place on loot based games do they have someone selling the best class of weapons in the game FOR A LOW PRICE. If you think 23 Strange Coins is a “high price,” let me give you this example. The Weekly Strike on hard give you 9 Strange Coins. Make 2 new characters with the same class as you main character that you play on, then transfer the armor between all 3 characters. You get 27 Strange Coins in 2 hours. Then you just find them from engrams and such. In one month, you can have 108+ Strange Coins. So why is Xur a problem? Let’s say you go and do the Nightfall. You and your friends/fireteam members struggle to get through. You put time and effort into beating this boss where Dregs one-hit melee you and Shanks take 1,000 shots to kill. At the end, you are rewarded with an Exotic weapon. Then Friday comes along. One of your friends got a lot of Strange Coins from engrams since they did strikes the past week. Xur is selling the same Exotic you got for 23 Strange Coins. You put a good hours or so into beating a difficult strike that required teamwork and a little luck, while your friend walked over and bought the same weapon. How do we fix Xur? Well there are multiple ways you can fix Xur. My suggestion is making him come once a month. This way, it limits the amount of weapons he sells in a month and the amount of Exotic gear people buy. If he only comes once a month, there should also be an increase on the cost of weapons I.E. 56 Strange Coins instead of 23. Now before people start complaining about this, remember you have a month to get 56 Strange Coins before Xur comes. Extra Idea - Exotic Engram Bounties: This is an idea I got tonight to be honest. Every so often after you level up your Cryptarch reputation, you can get an Exotic Engram Bounty from you Cryptarch Package. These would either work like Exotic Weapon Bounties, or just like escalated bounties (1,000 Impact Shards on the Moon, Kill 100 Guardians with your melee attack). Hopefully this will catch Bungie’s eye, because Xur is honestly one of the most broken vendors in the game. Thank you all from reading the post, and try to enjoy your time on Destiny.
