I know a lot of people have been asking for custom shaders, but I haven't seen anyone give coherent suggestions on how to make it work. So how about this:
1. Each armor piece would need zones (1-3) that are able to be colored. Hopefully, the designers and modelers already did this during production and didn't color each individually for every single shader. That would be a nightmare.
2. Let us earn colors as drops to be used in a custom shader. Whether earning/finding a color is for a specific zone or all of the three zones is up to you, Bungie.
3. Custom shaders are just that - custom. They don't have names or rarity. One exception might be clans. Give clan leaders the ability to save their clan's colors as a shader and allow anyone in that clan to use the shader (whether they have the colors unlocked or not). This would be comparable to guild cloaks in WoW. The shader name would be the clan name and the rarity locked at blue or purple.
4. Believe it or not, letting people make their own color schemes actually adds more value to the stock shaders. This custom system lets the designers at Bungie get more creative with the colors, patterns and textures that aren't available as custom options to players. Go nuts. Make shaders that we couldn't dream of doing in a basic color picker. Make them rarer. They become cooler and a more exciting drop when it happens.
I know this is just a "nice-to-have" but it's one of those small things that goes a long way in the mind of players.
