I bought Gjallahorn, Suros, Red Death, AND Icebreaker... I earned them.
EDIT: I fixed the thread up a bit. Came off a bit too aggressive than I intended.
I am a collector of sorts and I found that collecting these exotic weapons have a certain special place in my heart.
No, I did not "earn" these through RNG (which is not earning at all).
In fact buying these from Xur is much closer to 'earning' than getting lucky with an RNG drop from crucible after bottoming the list.
Using dozens of coins I have 'earned' from the daily story AND the weekly heroic missions is more true to earning these exotics than being the ONLY one in a raid group of 6 lucky enough to pull an exotic weapon out of VoG.
I have earned my shit through hours of playing these story missions and weekly heroic strikes.
Oh you found your Icebreaker as a drop running patrol missions on Mars? I call that LUCKY.
I bought a gun with 17 strange coins saved up after playing Heroic and the story missions when available.
I call that 'Earned'.

Only thing I've bought was the red death, like a month ago, I don't use it, and I have over a dozen other exotics. All of which were dropped in strikes or dailies - I've never once stepped foot in PVP. But by all means do PvP and get no rewards, I'll be on the outside loving all my exotics.

Yea my brother got the Multi-Mida Tool Scout rifle from the RNG system in The Crucible. Pissed me off, but I'm a much higher level than him and can put in a weekend of strikes and nightfalls for the weapon this weekend.

3 RepliesI don't have a single exotic. I "earned" a legendary scout rifle from a blue engram, a legendary helmet from a drop and that's it. I have the chest from Queen's Wrath, but everyone gets that. The gauntlets and legs, I bought. I have had no RNG luck whatsoever, and you know what? I don't care. It's entirely luck. I got an exotic bounty yesterday (and accidentally selected the one for Invective when I wanted Bad Juju), so I will get my first exotic tonight if I play. That's all the earning I've done. Of course, I'm also saving my coins to buy the two exotics I really want, Crest of Alpha Lupi and Last Word. So do I earn my gear? Or am I just a filthy casual?

2 RepliesListen to this story: Yesterday, I was playing some good ol' Vanguard Tiger when I get a legendary engram for a heavy weapon! I was pretty excited, so I went to the Cryptarch right away. I finally have two Warlocks to level 29 so I can do the raid on hard mode, so I thought to myself "If the exploit with Atheon gets patched, I'll just complete it normally, because it's not that much harder than normal. But if It does get patched, it would be pretty cool to get the Gjallarhorn to help me out." What happens next is something out of a movie. I got the Gjallarhorn from the engram! Then, just to add on to that, and show how much of a psychic I am, here's another story. Last Tuesday, when Iron Banner came out, I jumped into my Hunter thinking "Okay, I'm going to completely wreck. Time to go ham." When I got to the Tower to check up on things before I head out, I seen that I had a bounty to turn in. So, naturally, I went to turn it in. As I was walking over to it, I thought to myself "It would be really cool to get an exotic bounty from this. Especially one for the Invective. That would be pretty cool." Next thing I know, I turn in the bounty just to receive a Mentors Missive, and guess which bounty was available? That's right, "A Dubious Task"! I have a power or something. I swear to you all this happened.

1 ReplyLol, yeah these whiners must not have a job. Because you work, and as a Guardian, running the hardest missions earns me coins, like a job. I save these until I have enough to buy my exotic. I even get a choice or two... Hmmm sounds like how you EARN in the real world in a sense...

11 RepliesSo you bought something from xur almost every week. Wow really hard to get strange coins I see. If buying something from xur is earning, it is barely so. It is a much harder task to get something through RNG thus those people deserve it more.

5 RepliesGjallahorn dropped for me in Crucible. All I did was be the worst on my team.... that lost. I wasn't even looking at the screen when I got it, I had got up to feed my cat a few minutes before the match ended. Totally "earned" They just don't make Guardians like me anymore.

When fellow Guardians see you with this weapon, they know what you had to go through to earn it..." I don't mind buying those weapons from a vendor, don't get me wrong. but it is far from what I expected when I heard Bungie marketing it. "Wow, look, he has got the "Better-Than-Yours" (get the reference?) - wonder what he went through to get it." "He bought it from a vendor." "Ah - yeah, right..."

Haven't heard that childish mockery since...well, I don't think I've actually heard a single human being say that before (I understand the point of it and have heard it from T.V. surely, just never out of the mouth/keyboard of another human.)

No, just like you said, You earned them more than anyone else, buying thewm means that you put atleast 1 hour into the game, others may have got a lucky drop.

I got suros from a crucible match, I got ice breaker from a nightfall or the raid can't quite remember and I bought red death. I earned them all one way or another.
