Why disappointment with Destiny is valid.

I want to start by saying that Destiny is a good game. Not great; but good. I picked up a 60 dollar copy and followed it's upcoming release closely with guarded enthusiasm. That being said, I believe I was in the minority with this approach. With new consoles on the market with a library of re-releases, disappointments, and smaller arcade style games, players were looking for something to sink countless hours into to justify their purchase. Enter Destiny; a brand new IP from a team with a stellar reputation and a massive budget. Destiny poised itself as a promising start for the new systems and a truly unique and epic experience. Gamers immediately lined up to get a hold of this next phenomenon. This is where the trouble begins. A massive advertising campaign begins and people follow it avidly. A series of behind the scenes videos and interviews featuring incredibly vague descriptions of what Destiny has in store are released and help to start a huge hype machine full of misinterpretations, misinformation, and speculation. No one knew exactly what it was and Bungie was keeping everything about Destiny close to the vest. Even the alpha and beta contained the same exact parts of the game that had been revealed at early press events. Despite this the great mechanics and prevailing opinion that we were only seeing a minuscule portion of what was in store helped create a pre-order storm that swept the gaming community. Most games now feature special edition pre-orders and bonuses with varying price ranges. Most of these games are from proven developers and established IP with an avid fan base. Bungie of course is one of those proven developers and people jumped at the chance to spend 80 to 100 dollars on a full game and additional content that would give them hours of enjoyable gameplay. Then Destiny launches with everyone's expectations impossibly high, only to bring them crashing back to a much more reasonable level. Suddenly this 80-100 dollar investment is feeling a lot more like a 60 dollar one. I am sometimes unsure about my opinion on what this game turned out to be. I certainly got my money's worth and am glad I bought it but, my view has been muddled by several things that cast Destiny in a more positive light. Firstly, I love the people I have been playing with and we have a great time together. Grinding for gear is much more entertaining when you are chatting about life, other games, or just joking around. The times I have approached these monotonous tasks alone they have been much more painful. Secondly, the market is pretty dry for gamers like myself. Me and my friends on Destiny have talked often about how this is all we have to play right now. Conversations lean more and more everyday toward what we will be playing together next, which is not a good sign. I frequently see forum conversations where a reasonably angry gamer makes a valid point only to have some one fire back, "If it is so bad why have you played 60 hours." For me that answer is easy: "It is reasonably fun, and I have nothing else to play." I firmly believe in a more diverse market Destiny would already be in my rearview mirror. The final thing that makes me feel more positive than most about Destiny is that I have invested myself completely. I downloaded the companion app, read the grimoire cards, and learned all of the ins and outs. For a game that panders to so many gamers it certainly doesn't bother to explain itself regarding it's systems or it's lore. I had to spend a lot of extra time off game to get a complete experience and this helped the game out considerably. Putting myself in the shoes of an upset gamer that fell into the hype, bought the special edition, and spent the last year in anticipation, I completely understand their dissatisfaction. Destiny has some glaring flaws and half baked systems which can really make the game frustrating. Without going into too many some of the major offenders are, lack of social features and interactions, cryptarch loot system, grimoire cards, and the incredibly weak story. Destiny feels like half of a full experience augmented with filler to be a more complete one. Imagine spending 100 dollars for a Bungie game because you liked Halo's story and the cutscenes in Destiny's beta looked promising only to find that there are only a handful more cutscenes in the entire game with an ending that had me saying, "Wait, was that the ending... Let me check the map for the next mission." Bungie was certainly not upfront about the story not being forefront or that it would be sold in pieces. They certainly didn't mention that the full experience can only be had at Bungie.net by reading card after card of lore. I say all of these things because I am somewhat let down by the final product and invalidating people by saying they expect t much is unfair. If I had to speak for all of the other gamers that feel unfulfilled and unhappy with Bungie, or Activision because of Destiny, I would say it is because it feels a little bit like were taken by a con artist. That may sound extreme but, when you look at a bold offering of a 100 dollar edition for something totally new, or at the extreme advertising budget, or even about the secrecy leading up to release you can see how some people may feel that the wool was pulled over their eyes. They put their trust in a developer thinking the product would be fully represented in what was shown to the players. Now there are people out there with a statue of a character with lackluster voice acting, booklets of info they will never use, a copy of a game gathering dust, codes to DLC they don't want, and they are 100 dollars lighter. But, no matter what people paid for Destiny, I think a lot of people thought they were buying a promise and now it's broken. There are many reasons I could go over for why some one may have given up on Destiny, but I see where they are coming from and feel the same in some regards. Why Destiny is not the game people thought it would be is a mystery but, this undoubtedly damaged Bungie's relationship with some of it's fan base. I will probably sign on today and do some bounties and continue to get value from this product but, they jury is still out on the DLC purchase for me. Even though I don't feel railroaded I wanted to say that I think that is a valid stance and that I hope Bungie does their best to deliver on the promise that was made. In the meantime, let's keep our fingers crossed that future titles will help fill the void Destiny did not and that maybe due to this reaction from the community developers will be inspired to be more open and honest with the community about what to expect so that we can spend more time playing and less time arguing about what is living up to the hype.

  • Everyone wants to bitch and bitch and bitch about Destiny which is fine because that's peoples opinions. I honestly think Destiny is an amazing game with a lot of different features that haven't been done before and the game play is fun and addictive. That being said, there are some things that I think happened that led to the faults in the game. 1.) If your a true gamer, and know Bungie, you better believe this lame ass story they put out was NOT their idea. I mean c'mon we are talking about the creators of Halo. A game that revolutionized gaming forever, especially online. The story of halo was more complex than Destiny that's for sure. 2.) In my opinion, something happened in 2013 to the game and development to cause the lame story. Let's look at this for a second. The lead writer for Destiny left, coincidence? Not a chance. Look at who's paired with Bungie on this game? Activision. The kings of half assed games that will eventually sell DLC content to try and revive the game. I think Activision went to the writer and said the previous story, (which was amazing and WAY MORE engaging With crow and how the traveler is bringing the darkness), they didn't like it because why you may be thinking..... what game has Activision been so hell bent on every year? COD! What's probably the average age of COD players? Teens maybe below that? So if the story was to complex for kids the game won't sell. It won't apply to their market of buyers which is younger kids. So this why the release got pushed back from June to September because they scrambled to get together a story for the release and couldn't push the release any longer. Does the game not feel rushed? "He's in a tank", "it's the vex", "I don't have time to explain what I don't have time to explain" really? Real edge of your seat stuff right there let me tell you. NOT! 3.) I played alpha and beta, and in those people found hidden areas that were not accessible yet which many thought "oh it's beta no big deal". Which in reality what I think what happened was, the game was finished before alpha or beta, but when Activision cancelled the original story, they had to change story missions to accommodate the 'new' story, which made these areas still accessible and lead to DLC. 4.) DLC, in my opinion, was stuff already in the game but since things switched because, guess what Activision stepped in, they held off and kept the areas to DLC when it was in the "original" game. For example, in the new DLC, they have already been quoted saying that"the story missions are very different from what the game holds now". So in myn opinion, yes DLC was in the game but Activision stepped in and said otherwise with changing the story and changing the game. 5.) There were cut scenes that we have never seen in the game yet. The scene of crow with a handgun to your characters face, and him kidnapping you (crow in the original story is the queens brother). So there was definitely a BETTER story and more ENGAGING story the the one that we have now. I know I'm probably missing some things here but that's the basics. So everyone, lay off Bungie a little. They are trying to fix someone elses call. IMO Destiny is one of if not the best game I have played in a year or so, and that's as it is now. Along ask is please release the "original" game that you had. It sounds amazing after stuff read. If you haven't read it or seen it google it. The story is so much more compelling. Again Bungie I don't blame you, I think Activision is hurting more than helping your cause at this point though. You need the lead writer back, this game can be an amazing franchise if you stick to the "original" story again. Bungie your game is awesome and I'm not a Bungie fanboy either, I never owned an Xbox nor halo. These are my thoughts and opinions on what I have read and seen. Nothing is certain. Take care Bungie and fellow Guardians

    • The games Destiny and Warframe share similar conceits, but vastly different approaches to community interaction. The Warframe developers: Digitel Extremes, have WEEKLY LIVE shows with their players where questions get asked and answered, and upcoming events/Free DLC's get previewed. The Warframe Developers are Center Stage EVERY other week with LIVE shows where the DIRECTLY ANSWER Warframe players questions and concerns. Bungie's PR strategy with their VERY FRUSTRATED and DIMINISHING fans seems to be : Shut Up, Go -blam!- Yourselves. We will tell you whats best for you...we are too busy at the moment buying Diamond Dildos to Shove up our ASSES, out of the Money you Wasted on this half baked Turd. Prediction: Warframe will be going Strong in 10 years, while Bungie will go the way of THQ.

    • Funny how the Warframe developers can address and exceed ALL their consumers Needs, Concerns & Desires. Are Bungies developers just less talented, or can't give a shit?

    • I completely agree with the post. I have to say I'm a little pissed off and I've been gaming for over 30 years. I expect to buy a full game, with a story that makes sense. I kinda glad I started off with a exo because this game makes me feel like a mindless robot who has just been switched on (returned to life) to take orders from a ghost with no questions asked. I also only played the 10 day beta this summer and didnt expect that to be 30% of the full game, if I had known I would not have got this game. The game has beautiful lighting effects, good graphics and great gameplay. It is a balanced smooth FPS, but people feel cheated with the lack of content and story, the game is small. To compare this to warframe which is free to play, people have been robbed lol. I have never played a game that makes or forces you to experience the full game by having to pay for DLC. In my experience you purchase a game, complete it and then a new bad guy arrives in a DLC to further enrich what is already there. Destiny is not that! I'm very disappointed. I know the developers have played other games, they know how it works. Damn all the Halo games they have made out shine this, because its a full game that tells an amazing story. Why should I continue playing Destiny when I can un-dust the PS3 and play boarderlands 2. It has a full story, more weapons, the same loot factor (green, blue, purple, gold gear), character builds and the game feels bigger. Wait you dont have to buy DLC to experience the full game lol. People say just wait its only been a month, but this game was burnt out in two weeks, with nothing to do once geared up. They need to open the social aspect of this game quickly, because playing this game without voice chat is boring. I my friends arent online and I do a random strike, its painful that you cant explain tactics or tell people where dead ghosts and gold chests are. Hey most of the people I met and chat too came from again Warframe because it had voice chat and they are now on my friends list. Where are they now, not on Destiny :( . They game is good, when it should have been great. But true gamers know it is broken and was released to early.

        • I guess I'll start with the fact that I paid 65 dollars for an incomplete game. You gave me an awe inspiring start only to be let down each week as I patiently awaited the DLC. I kept telling myself it will get better... won't it? Well here we all are, after waiting months for an overhyped expansion, about an hour later and the story wasn't even opened up. It was hey go do these missions for me because I can't see. The worst part is EVERYBODY got the same weapon for completing the bounties ( MURMUR ) It's an amazing fusion rifle I will say that... But isn't the point (to some degree) of an MMO to show off your badass weapons and gear to your friends and other players?? Nearly everything is made available for purchase at the tower so how in the world are we supposed to be unique?? The only difference I see in most characters is hair color. Oh and not to mention the $34.99 I dropped for the expansion set. What did I get? A F***ING SPARROW THAT IN NO WAY SHAPE OR FORM IS DIFFERENT FROM ANYONE ELSE. That's not the best part though. Not only did I spend $100 dollars for all of this... I paid $100 and for some reason Playstation gets more crap than Xbox. Why Bungie?? WHY?!?!? I really wanted to love this game so much but I think they missed the mark with this one by a longshot.

        • Well said. Thank you for taking the time to type out this well spoken, and well thought out, post. The story in Destiny is so sorely lacking it makes me sad. When I played Halo games I was so invested in the story and characters that my heart would swell just hearing the intro music. I still think about the Master Chief and get a lump in my throat thinking about the last cutscene where he goes to have his armor removed. I can't wait to see him in action again. A tortured soul fighting the good fight. Destiny has none of that. Imagine if they explained none of the Halo plot to you, but made you read it on Grimoire cards? Bungie wouldnt have made Destiny, thats for sure. Because they wouldnt be the famous company they are now.

          • I get a feeling that Activision saw Destiny that was aimed at an older more experienced gamers with a complex story where part way thou you find out that you are working for the bad guy as a big plot twist and flipped out threatened to pull the money and try to reclaim what they had already spent so the story started to be cut then that pissed of the guy who wrote it so he quits with a part in his contract that protects his ideas so when he quit they needed a hole new story and in comes Activision saying keep it simple like cod and low rated thus cutting to stuff like trading , gambling , sparrow racing got cut ultimately leaving Destiny feeling like a gutted out game and the cool stuff we heard about a year before in the scrap bin

            • 1 I agree. But 2, how long did it take you to write this and why did I take the time to read this.

              • The OP is well written. I like Destiny so far, though I worry about how this will hold up as I level up and will have a very hard time finding players to raid with given my unpredictable schedule. I also don't know how I'll feel about the power creep the expansions seem to cause since I'm not into the best gear yet. What I like about Destiny is it reminds me of Phantasy Star Online, which I loved. What disappointed me the most was I loved Bungi's storytelling and creativity in Pathways into Darkness and the Marathon series and was expecting something great like that. I'll keep playing since I have the expansion, but if I don't like how this goes, I won't buy the sequel.

              • BUMP - I say RIP Bungie but only because Evil Activision tried to turn this game into a cash cow like CoD. It's very sad that they broke away from Microsoft just to get screwed by Activision. I still have faith in Bungie but I believe big game developers hold company's like this back due to their greed.
