In Defense of Bungie...

So let me begin by saying I have never thought that hiding content on discs and making customers pay more for it later is a good idea. I'm glad that this dirty little secret is out and I hope it motivates Bungie to break away from this trend. Bungie should have had more content and an actual compelling, detailed story. No excuse there. However, let's look at a few things Bungie did right. First, they released the game on schedule. Most of you are probably thinking that you wish they delayed the game to add more content. Personally, I have been annoyed by all the delays for next-gen games and the fact that studios can't follow through on deadlines. I think they had enough content, but someone at Bungie made some bad decisions and transferred too much of it to the DLC. Bungie needs to redeem itself now by making both DLCs absolutely epic. Second, Bungie was trying to make something very ambitious- a MMO-like FPS game that actually has the potential to be fun. They deserve a little slack because of this alone. Not a lot of slack, but a little. Third, PvP is a ton of fun, in my opinion. How many people buy Call of Duty games because of the story? The story of Destiny is pathetic at the moment (Darkness=bad, Guardians=good, The End), but the story missions provide more entertainment than many CoD games. I look at the PvE as an appendage to the main game: PvP, but that's just me. Fourth, the hype was too big. There is no way Bungie could meet expectations. This is partly their fault and partly our fault for believing someone can make a game with the story quality of The Last of Us, the immersion of Skyrim and the fun of CoD multiplayer. Bungie only got the last one right so far. And Angry Joe can back me up on this. Fifth, Bungie did not charge a subscription fee. Destiny isn't "massive," but it does have MMO elements. I'm sure at Bungie they discussed the possibility of a subscription like ESO. The following video which was made by a GameTrailers.com employee is especially interesting now after the game has launched. He discusses his predictions of a subscription for all multiplayer/co-op features of Destiny. Start watching at 2:48. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y2JkZqE0uvU Ubisoft’s CEO, Yves Guillemot, said their next-gen games are costing them about 10% more than the previous generation. To me, it doesn't make sense that next-gen games cost the same as last generation games. Add that 10% to all of the cost of preparing a decade-long franchise and you have a recipe to become a tightwad. It cost Bungie a lot to make Destiny and it looks like they erred on the side of taking too much money from their consumers. Here is the boring article about the 10% if you need the source: http://business.financialpost.com/2014/06/17/next-gen-game-development-costs-about-10-more-ubisoft-ceo-yves-guillemot-says/?__lsa=9f79-f7bb I enjoy Destiny, despite its flaws that need to be fixed. I played through the Last of Us Remastered while waiting for Destiny to launch and it was the exact opposite of Destiny- excellent story and amazing content, but boring multiplayer, in my opinion. I only played the game a few times after beating it. Destiny is the first game that has motivated me to make my own clan and I love it. It is a very social game and I can see how if you are playing on your own, or mostly on your own, it could be a huge disappointment. In conclusion, I do hope that the Destiny community makes a big deal out of Destiny's shortcomings because I want to see epic DLC and future games. I just want to say that Destiny has potential and I hope it doesn't lose its spark. Let's work together and find a way to make Destiny even better, Bungie. What are your thoughts? Agree? Disagree?

  • Well written. "I hope it doesn't lose it's spark." I still get pumped up on log in when I hear the menu music. It's amazing. And I was afraid destiny would lose its "wow" factor after a couple weeks in game. So far it's still so much fun, and awe inspiring. I agree, hopefully the DLCs will be epic. But you're right on with the points you made. Totally giving them slack (not saying they did a bad job) because this is the first game of this magnitude/genre. I didn't really pay attention to the hype or see what the game was developing into (didn't think id buy a next gen console, but honestly after seeing my friend play destiny I went and bought one the next day), which I think helped me to be unbiased towards the final product. Which I think was for the better. Anyways, well written, I agree, and the people who are freaking out about the current state of the game are too caught up in the hype and politics, just play it and enjoy it.

      Agree with you mostly, but could you edit the part where you talked about Bungie setting out to make an MMO? They said themselves that they weren't going to make an MMO, many people think they did but Destiny was never supposed to be one. All in all good review, my biggest thing with people is don't compare destiny to other games. Stop asking for Halo's story or Borderlands' loot. If you don't like the game I won't tell you why you should like it, and I am sorry for the people who think they got ripped off but as far as I have looked (and I have been following Destiny's progress for 2 years) Bungie never said anything that I could say was false advertising. Edit: In fact, the only things I want to see in the near future are voice chat overhaul and including the Grimoire in game.

      • It was not released on time, it was originally set to release in June or July.

        • Right on point. It was def overhyped, but easily the only game that deserved it. Although, at least when I bought Titan fall, I knew exactly what I was getting. Destiny kinda surprised me. The lack/complete absence of custom game modes leaves me salivating for the DLC. I know it's not halo, but I feel everyone was expecting it. I want to pull kids into a 1v1 match to teach those Suros guys a lesson (;

          • I think a lot pf the problem is Activision, just like how EA messed up Dice with BF4. Unfortunately, the great devs like Bungie need the massive funding that the large publishers can provide. Then the devs are stuck spouting the junk the contracts force them too, but many players can't see this and so they relentlessly ask questions that Bungie cannot honestly answer.

          • I agree 100%. I'm a little confused that gamers are beating on destiny for not being perfect. What game is? This is a solid game but has a ton of potential. And to your point I hope the DLC is epic so there is some momentum to push this game to be better and progress further. Good post!!

          • I agree with you on every point you made there Pinch. But do you agree with GWC? (Video link for ItsGWC's full review on Destiny)
