Why I'm having a blast and you have no idea of a failed launch

I'd like to take a moment to share my great experience with Destiny, why I'm so fond of the game and looking forward to the future in the face of all the negativity on the forums surrounding the game. I'll try to be brief and right to the point. To give some quick context, I had little exposure to the scope of the game prior to it's launch. Wasn't following it for years prior. I have over a decade of MMO experience (FFXI, RIFT, FFXIV, WOW, GW2, etc.). I have over two decades of FPS/Action Adventure games. I'm currently a level 26 hunter. Going into the game, my expectation was that it had a story/campaign component that you could either solo or do with friends, coupled with an endgame component that required friends/party/guild type involvement to complete. At it's basic form, would be a FPS shooter with some MMO-lite elements to it. What I've discovered in Destiny is an absolutely fluid feeling FPS with a campaign/story that agnostic of story, rivals or excels any triple-A FPS game in terms of content & quality of mechanics. The story might be fragmented if you will, but that's not the defining experience for me. Multiplayer modes and depth that again rivals or excels any triple-A FPS game in terms of scope (game modes/types). On top of that, I've discovered and endgame - the MMO-lite component - that no other FPS shooter has currently. One that creatively blends basic FPS multiplayer components and co-op into a progression system that ultimately feeds into an RAID setting with mechanics that are akin to MMORPG's. I find this absolutely enjoyable to play, with the right balance of grind vs. effort that gives you a sense of joy when you obtain that next item to continue your progression. This baseline vision Bungie has given us is one hell of a foundation to keep me glued for many years to come. Coupled with that, their acknowledgement of existing opportunities (Voice Chat, Randomized Elements, Story Integration, etc.) and near-term plans to expand the scope/content of the game, has me ecstatic for what's to come down the road. I struggle to see how dominant the negativity on these forums and how short-sighted it is when you look at the offerings out there currently. Considering this a failure, to me, is a complete insult to those who've worked tirelessly to meet customer & shareholder expectations with a title this massive & genre-defining. I'll end with this - if you think this is a failure, you most certainly never played FFXIV version 1.0 (it was shut down and relaunched as FFXIV A Realm Reborn v 2.0). Here's an article that can help put this in perspective: http://www.gamesradar.com/why-final-fantasy-14-failed-and-how-it-was-reborn/ In the meantime, I'll continue having a blast, hoping my fiance doesn't leave me and my kids don't forget my name while many of you sink hours into a game you keep playing while scorning it to death. Keep up the great work Bungie!!! Sincerely, A Happy Hunter!

          • First off i agree with you. Second of the story feels terrible. I say feels and not is for a simple reason. Major writer change 7 months before launch. Planned to last ten years. For ten years you want fluid cohesive story. Its obvious they stripped the story down to the barebones. Its not book one. Not even chapter one. What they gave us at launch is simply an inyroduction to the universe. A prologue. Why? One milking money through dlc (lame yeah but whatever) but most importantly it gives the new writer/writers the ability to create their own vision of the story rather than picking up where someone else left off. Id be willing to bet as dlc drops the story will spiderweb out into something great. And queue a billion hater responses to this post about corporate bs tangents.

              • Every time somebody talks about something having a failed launch i always refer them to the fact that FF14 was so god damn teribad they shut it down and made it again. Destiny had it's launch issues and still has issues, sure but a failed launch? not by a long shot.

                • I understand what you're saying, this game is fun and extremely enjoyable with friends, but that doesn't excuse it's glaring flaws. We complain and scream negativity so that we can get a even better experience. I'll admit, there are some people who just want to complain because they can, but there are those who complain to see a better game achieved!

                • I'm in the same boat as you. I played several MMO and mainly FPS. I had no idea about this game. Bought it only because everyone else was buying it... I love it... I have come to realise things though... All gear below legendary is useless. So basically anything I get, I don't even look at it unless it's legendary... 2 things I would like to see in terms of Destiny improvements: 1) Borderlands bazillion guns/armor coupled with rolls... this game needs more guns and more options and more random stats. There should be rare guns that can roll better than an exotic... and there should be hundreds of exotics... 2) Unlimited light levels - something along the lines of Diablo 3 Paragon and make it a little easier than grinding for strange materials... I'm at a level 27 right now and I play the same thing over and over and over and over again... and the only thing that can be possibly rewarding is a legendary drop, which almost never happens (which I'm ok with!). I'm also dissapointed that you can buy legendary and exotic gear (which I've exclusively bought or aquired through the queens missions) I've yet to earn a legendary/exotic piece of armor (I got 1 or 2 guns from drops)... which honestly would have made the game a lot more excitting for me. Now I'm just grinding for vanguard points so that I can "cheat" my way into just buying the stupid legendary guns I want... and the grind is ridiculous... the bountys are the same over and over... the missions from patroling are painful.. I cringe every time I need to do a scan on the other side of the map...

                  • Love destiny but am I the only one that wants badass new looking bosses instead of bigger versions of a little enemy, I mean they can be of the cabal or fallen race just make them look more unique and stand out more than the regular mobs

                  • I wasn't really bothered by the story on my first character. It wasn't compelling, it just felt a little bland. It's hard to enjoy a story when it's little more than 'You're a good guy, so go kill that big bad guy.' But the story got a worse on my second character. I played though the Rasputin missions again and realized that story line doesn't go anywhere. An ancient guardian AI which may or may not be a bad guy now would be a good story, but no, you just move on to fight some generic bad guy. It's one of multiple loose ends that are just teasing us, and not in a good way. It's not good storytelling to barely establish an interesting character and then not hear anything about them for months. Plus, we can't even skip cutscenes. If there was a little more variety in the end game, it wouldn't be so bad. Part of it is how similar Destiny is to Borderlands 2 in many ways. BL2 had a great story that I enjoyed multiple times and it left room for multiple DLCs.

                  • Some things suck because of the cutting, but I really love the game. I've had a blast, just finished VoG for the first time, and I'm loving it. Yeah, it'd be nice to see Crow and all the other stuff lost, but I'm enjoying what I have now. (oh, and I don't mind reading the cards so I like the story so far)

                  • this game could have been tremendous...instead it's just blah....i keep thinking about the original vision of destiny and all that could have been. that game could have become legend....instead we get this watered down version that while playing when my GF says "honey i need you to help with blah blah blah" i have not problem dropping the controler. i was really looking for a reason to break up with her and the original vision of destiny was the basket i put all those eggs into. don't get me wrong for some reason i don't understand i keep playing it over and over agian at the same time thinking "wow this is really boring" or "what is the story/reason behind this particular event i'm doing". remember grape drink and grape juice look the same and sometimes taste the same but they are not the same formula. right now destiny is grape drink and the original vision is the grape juice i salavate for.

                  • Glad to see all the positive feedback and clean responses. To the one poster, no I have not had an opportunity to try Borderlands though I've seen many make the reference, I'll have to check it out sometime. My overall point is while I agree there are opportunities with the game in its current form, it's still very fun and addicting for me and everyone I currently play with, and where it has its shortcomings, I have faith that Bugie/Activision will improve over time. I often see people comment to the effect that they (Bungie/Activision) have already made their money and while they've likely recuperated the bulk of their costs, they're nowhere near the stratosphere of dividends they're aiming for, e.g. Long-term profits akin to COD. Consequently, I see them addressing its shortcomings and building on their foundation for a long time to come so long as they don't view the longevity as too risky given the negative fallout. My only wish is that where people have feedback, to provide it in the right manner and channels to Bungie/Activision so they can be informed and make the right investments to improve the experience for the masses.

                    • I agree with a lot of your points, but I still take issue with the emptiness of the levels and the completely vanilla patrol missions. The worlds are not fun to walk around and get repetitive very quickly (in addition to using a host of illusions to make them seem bigger than they are). The patrol missions are simply go here or kill this many. No creativity went into those. The mechanics and interface are excellent, for sure. And I'm sure there are many improvements to come. But as a stand alone title Destiny falls flat.

                    • I was with ya at fluid game mechanics rivaling any top FPS but you lost me at saying the campaign/PvP has decent content not talking about the narrative side but the campaign is dull its mostly just go here, kill these, hold out for 3 waves halo 3s campaign content had more variation to it than destiny with all the different kind of encounters and the PvP has 4 gametypes all slayer with a random 5th and no private matches either........ i cant think of any FPS with less PvP content but........ it has better core gameplay

                    • I don't know what to say, except, that's a great post. There are wayyyyy too many people getting uptight over little things and being impatient instead of waiting to see how the game evolves. My advice to them is, if you're putting in lots of hours and enjoying the gameplay, then stick with it and you'll probably be rewarded with the first game that truly evolves before your eyes.
