Gunsmith what's the point???? (UPDATED)

Once you get to say level 15 the gunsmith becomes well redundant. He never has anything of use to sell other than ammo refills. Why bungie could you not have given him a random loot stream which involved exotics and legendary. I hate it when games make characters that have a 2 min role but never leave the game. Just a thought give him a random loot stream and mix up the currency used, so many use them. What does everyone else think? (update) I realize I should have said Gaurdian outfitter as well, I have more emblems that I care for but shaders are in short supply. I guess I didnt mention her because I forgot she even existed. Don't get me wrong I don't want things handed to me I like the idea of earning things but why do people think that going out and collecting glimmer or other bits such as strange coins to purchase an exotic is not earning it, if you ask me it's far more earned than all the little turds out farming loot caves for engrams. I am not asking for there to be an exotic up for grabs every day just make him and her have some more value to the end gamers. (update #2) Can we please stop posting the obvious now, we all know he sells ammo and has a small role in a bounty these two very small points do not make his role in the game anymore relevant. I would love to to see more interaction with all the NPC's, but I think the GUNSMITH should be one of the more relevant NPC's of a SHOOTER. Having him build guns or change perks simply would not work in this iteration of the game. Why? well that ability would render exotics redundant and pointless cause we could all just make one no need to find/earn/buy them. I think the future games will have far more customization, but the best course of action for these NPC's I think would be to just give them random loot streams, also removal of glimmer cap. Setting exotic at say .9% chance of drop and legendary at say 2% rares 5% GIve other stuff to sell as well like energy for coins, weapon parts. And make the purchase of exotics require x amount of weapon parts and x amount of strange coin, this would make acquiring them a bit more tricky as one might not have the required parts at the time of the exotic drop. Also involve the gun smith in some new side mission, something this game is seriously missing side missions that is.

  • The vendors at the tower are, mostly, obsolete once you hit higher levels. I wouldn't mind going on bounties to get shaders, ships and some background info on them. C'mon Bungie, gives us more background on the people.

I agree. I like the "side mission" idea, and was thinking of something similar. Like, you go to the gunsmith, and he says something like "Yo, guardian, I am working on something special, but I need some parts and special material. Bring me back a legendary engram, weapon or armor." You say to yourself, okay, if I decrypt the legendary engram at the cryptarch, it could turn out to be armor or a weapon I already have, or shards or energy. But, if I give it to the gunsmith, I know it will turn out to be a legendary weapon (maybe even an exotic) that will be somewhat unique. Then, when you give the gunsmith the engram, he sends you back out for something else, unique parts or material maybe. This would give us one more thing to chase, rather than marks and special coins, with the chance to get something a bit unique. If Bungie did it right, it could add interest, at least for a while, to grinding. They could even add something like, once the gunsmith gives you a weapon quest, you could start (RNG based) finding special weapon parts and upgrades in chests, that you would then bring back to the gunsmith as part of the quest. They could also add reputation requirements to the gunsmith that could play a part in weapon quests, or, at least in what he offers you. Related to the gunsmith, I would like to see more sources for weapons that are not strictly tied to PvP. I don't care for PvP, and, yeah it is probably because I suck at it. So, for me, virtually ruling out several sources of weapons (Crucible Quartermaster, FWC, New Monarchy, etc.) and an entire currency, really sucks.

      • Gunsmith needs to be able to reforge just like with IB. Maybe make it cost glimmer. So glimmer can be more useful

        • He's OK as long as you need weapon parts. Buy 9 green guns at a time, ~400 glimmer each and get one or 2 weapon parts from each... Same for guardian outfitters...

I'm sure this is an unpopular idea, but making it where we would need to go to him in order to perform a proper dismantlement would give more to the game. Maybe dismantling it ourselves would only give a fraction of material, if any at all. Anything to see more activity involving more people. You'd be surprised how small things like this, showing more activity in general areas, does for the game. I honestly wish there would be more people in the Tower. It would be nice to have a teleport vendor for raids, strikes, weekly's, daily's, Nightfall, etc.; one for each, but that's me getting way too ahead of myself.

        • I rather think that our faction rankings should be worth something. After x amount of levels the cryptarch and the smith should be offering gear that's relevant to the faction level. Sure the smith would need to be given a faction level and we'd have to joyously grind that out until our brains are mush once again, but given that we did we should be getting offered some decent enough guns that are actually usable rather than the bs that he offers. The cryptarch has the same problem if not worse. Faction level should ether dictate loot quality for his stuff or higher chance to upgrade.

That reminds me of another post, about building your own legendary weapon. Something to do with parts and unwanted weapons and such. 1: Being able to select the type, primary, special or heavy 2: then class, auto, shotgun, machine gun 3: the subtype, which determines the base stats, ammo capacity and accuracy 4: the variable look and color 5: the 2 special skills and 2 subsets This is where it could get tricky, they would have to decide if you pick a whole subset group that's predetermined as in randoms, or each individually, as well as mutually exclusive and semi-specific abilities that are for either automatic or semi-auto. The likelihood of this happening is very slim, random drops are what drive the game, and custom creation would probably kill it if legendaries could be made without a proper limiting factor, even if it took a lot of time and resources, or maybe custom rares would work Specifically my idea is it would take 5 legendary weapons(all primary, special, or heavy based on which one you want) and you can only have one single custom at a time, which cannot be shard through the vault and given the time and resources costing maybe 20,000-25,000 glimmer, you wouldn't want to do it over again too easily. There's hope, same could work for armor also.

                  • Maybe once a weapon is upgraded all the way he can customize it for us via weapon skins , and even maybe one more special upgrade for x amount of glimmer and x amount of weapon parts, only applied to rare and legendary. this could make the weapons more personal for the players.

                      • He's only supposed to be useful for lower level players, because they will eventually ditch the initially valuable guns he sells you. If you're at level 20 or above, it ruins the loot system because you wouldn't get rid of those legendary/exotic guns because they're always useful, and if no one gets rid of them then they don't become valuable anymore
