Maybe Some Perspective

Here we are two weeks into Destiny's release life and what a life it is. Love it, hate it, or love to hate it, everybody seems to have an opinion. The strengths of the game have been highlighted and its flaws categorized, dissected, and shrilly screamed from the virtual rooftops. I have no intention of adding to either side of that debate in any substantive way. What I do want to offer is a little perspective. I woke up this morning in my bed, where coincidentally, I had been sleeping knowing I was safe from assault, -blam!-, and most other forms of bodily badness. I had a healthy breakfast with my daughter and we set about our day surrounded by light, electric noise, and the rest of the environs of our small but comfortable house. I fired up my laptop and read the day's news, as I do most mornings. Once I had finished that, I hopped over to the Bungie forums to have a look at what was new. Wow. I have been a fan of Bungie since I got into console gaming when Halo 2 dropped and I have in the past bragged about the community of gamers and our vibrant, exciting community. I must admit I have been really disappointed in online communities as a whole over the last several years. Once upon a time most of us here in the forums knew how to be respectful to other posters, even when we disagreed with them. I see that is now as out of fashion as bell bottom jeans are. When did we as a community become so vitriolic, mean, and small? I have been really bothered by this sea change in our online discourse. So...here is the perspective. No one in the forums has been beheaded by Destiny like some folk in the real world from OK to Syria have been. Destiny has not given anyone pancreatic cancer, to kill them in six months. Destiny did not fire anyone from their job, deny them SS benefits, or have an affair and then leave them. Destiny did not kidnap anyone's children to use them as sex slaves. Destiny did not cause a car wreck, an angry boss, or a sick child. In fact, all Destiny has done is be a video game which has sold hundreds of thousands of copies in the first two weeks. Bungie is not ISIS, ISIL, Al Queda, the Weatherman, the Black Panthers, or your local support group. They are a for profit company who develop intellectual properties for sale for the purposes of making money. Whatever else they are they are that first. If you hate Destiny, fine. If you want to share your thoughts with the larger world, that too your inalienable right. Same goes if you think Destiny is the best thing since sliced bread. Personally, I do not care if Destiny hops out of my Xbone, craps on my floor, and smacks me in the face, I am still incredibly fortunate to be in my position. In a world in which so many are not physically safe, to say nothing of having enough to eat or wear, I sit and play a beautiful game on a 50 inch plasma TV, on a $400.00 game system, chatting electronically with my friends from around the world from the comfort of my comfy sofa. Who's got it better than us? Statistically, very few in the world. Perspective folks. It is a bloody game, that is all that it is. Love it, hate it, it does not matter but please can't we be a little bit kinder to each other and ourselves?

When did we as a community become so vitriolic, mean, and small?
When Bungie decided to flip us the finger and give everything to the toxic Destiny community they created, Bungie used to care for the community before, now they use the worst community manager in existence with the lamest mods to keep the site from falling down, which it already did.
I have been really bothered by this sea change in our online discourse. So...here is the perspective. No one in the forums has been beheaded by Destiny like some folk in the real world from OK to Syria have been. Destiny has not given anyone pancreatic cancer, to kill them in six months. They are a for profit company who develop intellectual properties for sale for the purposes of making money. Whatever else they are they are that first.
With all due respect comparing a game with real world problems isn't helping, there are plenty of reasons for people hating on destiny, just because it is the highest selling game in history doesn't make it the best game, in fact it has more flaws than improvements. 1. Bungie lies: Ever since the game was announced Bungie where teasing a totally different game, i remember because i was excited for that game and not this one i got. The game had plenty of lore, the game supposedly would let you explore the world like never before, the MMO aspects of the game all of that was bad marketing to a game that failed a those things. 2.DLC: Everyone knew Playstation was getting exclusive DLC since 2012, the problem was that Bungie instead of addressing it just like every other Developer, they decided to keep the Xbox community in the dark and not share with everyone what kind of stuff was coming. It wasn't until two years later (2014) at E3 that PlayStation got an exclusive alpha test, beta head start, a giant amount of content as timed exclusive and even the expansions has PlayStation exclusive content, so Xbox owners don't only jad to pay the same price for less, they have to wait a full year so they can have those things and that's going to be a problem now with the lack of post-game content in the game. 3. What happened to some of the content?: Destiny like i said used to be filled with plenty of content ever since Bungie started teasing the game. They showed the community places to explore, weapons to use, vidocs detailing how the game is, cutscenes with actual better dialogue and much more. So if all of that was supposed to be in the game where is it? What happened to the campaign story they promised, even a reddit user posted how the game was supposed to be. Why is there locked content in the game that can be accessed by glitching?. What about the DLC leak? All of that shows that Bungie scrapped a really amazing game for the sake of Activision. Everyone knows that Bungie and Activision are in it for the money but Bungie really dropped the ball with what they promised everyone in their community. 4. The flaws outweigh the good things: Destiny is fun and the gunplay is amazing, the skyboxes are spectacular and the art style is beautiful, The soundtrack is awesome too. The thing is those are the only good things about the game. The rest of the game feels unfinished and bland, the story was one of the worst things ever, hell even the lore in the grimoire shit sounds way more interesting but Bungie decided to not include it on the game and make the player do the same shit for no motivation, the characters are underdeveloped, the dialogue is atrocious, exploration is limited, the social aspects of the game are barely there, the constant repetitiveness and the fact that it's not helping the player in any way, the loot system is still broken even if its RNG, the lack of customation which they promised it was going to be one of the biggest aspects of the game, leveling up until 20 is fun but after that it becomes a chore, crucible is fun until you realize how unbalanced tge weapons are and the loot system there is fixed to give players who did nothing better and cooler stuff than those who busted their asses trying to be #1, etc. The game has a lot of potential that's for sure but the lack of post-game content and that everyone is alreadt reaching level 30 are big factors on ehy people hate this game.
Who's got it better than us? Statistically, very few in the world. Perspective folks. It is a bloody game, that is all that it is. Love it, hate it, it does not matter but please can't we be a little bit kinder to each other and ourselves?
Even tho i agree with this it won't happen, all the old members (including me) are trying our best to keep calm and direct the new people to the right forum but we get people insulting us, claiming they know more than us because "muh destiny" to the point of getting into insults and bad behavior oh and lets not forget who's in charge of the community perspective of the game: Deej. He hasn't done anything to fix the problem and made new mods who are enforcing rules that are not part of the CoC. They are moving threads to #offtopic just to throw it there, #Gaming doesn't work anymore, #Community and #Bungie are just two #Destiny subforums, #Offtopic is normal for the time being and #clans is pretty weird. The old mods haven't been around for awhile and the new ones aren't doing their job. All i have to say is Bungie.net is broken, some try to fix the problem but instead get shafted by the new community who will defend thw game to the stars, a game that while its fun it does not have replay value and its just another Watch dogs, Titanfall and ESO. Games that aren't what the developer made them to be.

    • I have beta tested a number of games, Motor City Online, Star Trek Online, Star Wars the Old Republic, Marvel Superheros and I have noted that there seems to be one constant in these type of games, people rushing to get to end cap. Then these same people complain about the lack of end game content, yet the game is only a week old. If you make leveling harder, then you hear people complain about having to grind and if it is easy, well then you hear about the lack of end game content. I have had the game for a few days now and am only to level 5, hunter class. I only play a few hours a night as I cannot dedicate the time it takes to hit end cap like so many have already done. Is the game perfect, no, no game that I have played is. So far my experience with Destiny has been a pleasant one and I am enjoying the game. Most of the ones I beta tested are nothing like that game now. They have undergone serious revisions and updates to improve the game and although I do not play most of those games anymore, they are much better now than when they were released. (Except MCO, EA killed that game for Sims) Will this game get better than it is now, yes, but it needs good input and recommendations and not the typical childish rants about how the game sucks with little or no ideas on how to make it better. Developers cannot take much from posts that say the game sucks, it isn't what they wanted, and they are leaving. Sometimes it makes me think that these people bought the wrong game.

    • Well said. I agree however it does feel like we have been sold a half assed game and been lied to. I don't agree with the crap some people post as clearly Activision need to make money from it however why not just give us at least some of the content that was clearly cut for free?

    • While I agree with your sentiments and love that post, it's futile, as this is a common thing with todays' gamer. To these guys, it's not a game, it's a reason to let out all the frustration and anger they have in themselves that they have no way of letting go of in a constructive manner.

      • This is, by far, the singlemost thread in the entire Destiny forums I have connected with in a positive manner. Thank you. Also, the one part I disagree with, is that Destiny "did not cause an angry boss". I'm sure there are some bosses out there angry about this game and unfortunately take it out in some form on others haha.

      • You're damn right, Sir. I'm part of the new gaming generation, and I get pretty disgusted that a lot of good ideas get lost in a sea of angry, hatred-spewing people. It's a shame. However, I'm glad you said this. Thank you.

      • I think the real problem is destiny is the best sold game in video game franchise history now, and with that comes a influx of gamers that would of never been on the bungie forums before. Being that old and newer gamers are playing I think people had the wrong peespective coming into it as a whole and that is partly bungies fault they showed alot of content pre launch that just isnt here. Im not bothered by it tho, I like the game just fine some tweeks would be nice but there on a ten year cycle in my mind and we are 2 weeks in. If there is one thing im hoping is that they will end up adding new parts to the planets aswell as new planets im sure they will in the end or I dont see how the game will survive but if not oh well I guess. My life wont be destroyed because I spent 120 and it didnt fully live up to my hope which I dont think will happen but you guys know how life is haha.

      • Indeed, and as other commenters have stated, it's mostly a "pearls before swine" conundrum. Thanks for sharing however.

      • I completely agree but most people don't understand that regardless of how they look at it its still just a game and there are far more important things to worry about

        • All I got from this was reality mostly sucks, and that most people probably were hoping this game could be an escape from those horrible things you just listed. If you can call a game just a game, I do not think you understand the people who are truly passionate about them. Games can easily be much more to people than you are giving them credit for. I think that the community is severely hurt because this game is coming from Bungie who has done wonders in the past at both communicating with is fan base and with delivering an outstanding product. The current game and community support is lacking and I completely understand why people are going into these discussions upset.
