Hi Bungie,
Firstly thanks for making Destiny. It's been good so far, but please can you give player a reason to use glimmer?
I think the problem is that too much of the game is about vanity and cosmetic items rather than things that actually have a function in the game and can be consumed. As consumption is a major part of any economy.
here are some free ideas for things to spend glimmer on.
Consumable items for each primary gun type that will add a void, arc or fire mod to the gun for a short period of time. Should be purchasable at the gunsmith, cos god knows that guys is useless after the first reward you get off him. How does this guys earn a living?
Make bonds, marks and cape consumable, have modifier stats on them and have a durability. That way they actually have a point in the game and can be another glimmer sink. Better bonds, capes and marks could have greater effects or last longer.
Make emblems works as modifiers and buffs. They are pointless as cosmetic items. Players would be buying loads of these if they actually added a modifier on to there intellect, discipline or strength stats or added a buff of some kind. As they are at the moment they are pointless.
Allow players to buy resources as well as find them on patrols. Lets face it some players just want to buy this stuff and some players like going oput and harvesting it. allow the crucible and vanguard quartermasters to sell these items back to players (at an inflated price to offset the time takes to harvest them). If the quatermasters don't fit, then why not have a black market seller NPC (not Xur) who players can buy thee and ascendent items from for the right amount of glimmer.
Destiny could be such a rich and rewarding game, but at the moment it feels like it's just missing so many elements of a game economy to make it interesting in the long term

Another idea Allow player to use glimmer to purchase materials like relic iron, helium filaments, spin metal, ect. So I don't have to run around for a half hour looking for chests

Some more ideas: Allow players to change the appearence of their characters after creation at an NPC in the Tower for a cost in glimmer. Hair colour and style, markings, skin tone etc. bascially everything apart from their race and class.

I just use my glimmer on ammo synthesis that I don't use and cool looking ships from holiday
