I may have been a bit upset yesterday... I'm Sorry

Okay, so I was involved in multiple arguments yesterday over the Bungie Forums discussing why the production of DLC in tandem with a video game release proper is… wrong. To this, I made many accusations of Bungie based on a single piece of weak evidence, though evidence none the less. I will apologize here as well as those on Bungie [dot] net for my conduct as it was illogical and out of anger (mostly). However, I stand by most of what I said; to create content that will be sold later as DLC DURING the production of the actual game is wrong. For Example: Lets say you want me to build you a box; you give me the materials to build it, and the money for my time spend doing so. I finish the Box as promised, but lets say that I finished really early, and that there was some materials left over that I could use for another, smaller, box. Say you come back to me after receiving your first box asking for another matching, smaller, box. I say “Sure! I can to that.” You pay me again… and I give you the small box I had already built with the money and resources you had provided before. That is what I am against: I will not pay for content (a box) that I have ALREADY paid for. With that said… I don’t think this is what Bungie has done… After reviewing the evidence, it is unlikely that content was cut or locked-off to be sold later. However, I will still caution Bungie. The King’s Watch area, is VERY developed. Like… it has design, and detail, and I mean the Fallen are even populating that area, and can be fought! The Fallen mobs are obviously placeholders because the “boss” is called “ULTRA CAPTAIN”… which is just silly. As well, the corridors and such are not even rendered, have have NO detail or design to speak of; they are placeholder to make map making easier in the future. This goes for all these glitched areas; there isn’t much to scoff at. So… I apologize to Bungie for my nearly blind accusations. (But seriously, why place the mobs and add the details if it wasn’t meant to be in the game in the first place???)

  • Seems like Activsion is more like EA these days. Its sad I've been playing games for 20+ years I remeber when you bought a game you bought the whole game, not just a portion and the rest to be unlocked later for a fee. Its lame and I have to say shame on you Activision for becoming EA.

    • I don't understand why you differentiate between a disc and a downloaded game. The disc is and of itself, not the complete game. That's how MMO's work...Have always worked and always will. Content is content regardless of what medium it's downloaded in/from. Obviously the content on the disc isn't finished or, we'd have it so...Is there a reason you want unfinished content?

      • It all comes down to how the DLC is marketed. If a dev team built a certain space ship but it was cut due to packaging size for bandwidth or disk size limits, and it later gets included in a DLC pack, I'm pretty sure no one would get upset about that. If a dev team built a whole zone and it was likewise cut from the original game simply because it wasn't jiving with the intended narrative, and it later gets included in a DLC pack, people may have mixed opinions on the subject, but that's not ethically wrong to do. Now if a Dev team creates something that's integral to the narrative of the game, that's just part of the game, and it gets cut, release of that content at a premium evokes a label commonly seen in the entertainment industry as "The Directors Cut". This content can be ethically marketed with the initial product if done so under the expressed notion that this is content that just didn't make the release (Deus Ex: Director's Cut being a prime example). To take this content and label it "New Content" is ethically wrong; it's called lying. New Content is "New Content". Old Content being released is "Never Before Seen" or "Special Edition" or "Director's Cut" etc. This is not to be confused with content that is specifically being developed as DLC apart from the core game development prior to launch. If it's entire purpose for development is the future independent sale of that content as DLC, that is in no way ethically wrong.

      • Well someone has to be working on DLC before the game goes gold. Developers have artists and architects that would basically be getting paid just to sit around twiddling their thumbs if they didn't start work on content for download later while the programmers are still working on final certification. The thing I don't agree with and refuse to support is stuff like Capcom pulls, where all the content is complete and on the disc and they sell you a 1KB unlock file. That's like buying a meal from a fast food restaurant and having to pay extra for a key to unlock the fries that are sitting on your tray. That said, I'm waiting until the official DLC launch to determine just how much content has been added to the game since day one before brandishing my pitchfork.

      • You understand those locked upcoming missions are place holders right? This game is server based and its possible that the expansion packs are being testing internally and beta tested through other bungie servers with some form of authenticating to allow you access. A game this big, with worlds that are vast and huge will always have gated off areas so they can be tested. We all assume that this is a cash grab, and sure, you can be very right about that, but what people forget to know is that what video games were 20 years ago and what they are now, are very different beasts. This is a business. DLC is a way companies can make extra money to fund more content. Sales of the inital game go into paying developers, marketing and of course the publisher as well as bank roll future stuff, but having more money come in as well only helps the game, and yes of course, the publisher, which will allow more things to be done with this game if they are seeing a vast and repeatable profit. if activision wasn't seeing alot of extra money coming in, they would be hesitant on future expansions and content. if you don't like the furture paid content with this game, then be content with what you have. Personally, I don't mind paid dlc as long as it gives us a good solid amount of content at a affordable price, and 20 bucks per pack seems ok, but again.. I haven't played the content.. so who knows. Bungie has always been a good supporter of its community and I don't see them doing anything shadey, and no, this map "leak" is not shadey, it is someone that got ahold somehow of where their place holders are for future content. plain and simple. We have no idea what content is on the disc, but if it was put there to make the game less buggy when the dlc hits, because it has been explained by other developers that putting simplistic forms of code and areas/content in a games dlc areas can make the content less buggy since it is not being added persay, but "patched" for better compatibility. So if the game was "finished" in july, and extra content was being worked on from say april to august. and if they had time to add in content from that extra dlc to make the content run better when it drops, then fine. I get how dlc works. i know it seperatly funded. but here is the thing. I am not defending activision, I am defending how dlc works and how it is usually applied. is all dlc worth it? no. of course not. is some dlc actaully worth the cost? sure it is. do you have the right to complain, sure, but know all the facts first, its easy to jump on a "they are totally screwing us!" rant. if a game is content driven, don't feel you are entitled to the content that is being prepped for months in advance, or even years, for free. If this paid content is surprising you, then please research the games you buy before you do. This is a business and as long as extra paid content is a viable way for companies to make money, it will continue to do so. movies have split into two in many cases to not only tell a story but to make a almost identical sum at the box office. two lord of the rings movies, or even 3 in the hobbit's case, will make 3 seperate billions than just 1 if it was all one movie.. this is kinda the same thing in SOME regard. having another financial way to make extra money with new content is not new. and to answer one of your top questions, you do understand that the headers in the game are exactly the headers on the dlc content right? so YES obviously this is the DLC content you paid for if you got the limited and higher packs, or the dlc season pass via your systems marketplace. so yes. please research or view unbiased sources and avoid getting your info from people who are just ranting. If you don't want to pay for content then don't. no one is forcing you to, but if you are wanting more content out of this game then you are going to have to buy it. you can't market a "10 year game:" without making 10 years worth of content, so yes,, Destiny may end up costing you hundreds of dollars. considering I have got about 100 hours out of what shipped on the disc, compared to other games that I have bought for 60 bucks with 8-15 hours.. this game has completely delivered for me. Hell, I have spent far more than 60. I have the regular and the limited edition and managed to snag a retail price for a ghost edition too.. (tho i sold the copy of the game in that one..) so all in all i am sitting around 250-300 for my investment into destiny.. but anyway, those are MY thoughts on it. right, wrong. i don't care. They are my thoughts.. I don't support alot of what activision has done, but I know this is a business and for the most part, how dlc works. like it, don't like it.. that is completely up to you, just make informed thoughts that are based on something real and don't ride the rant train so much.

          • OK. They will unlock the map for free, since the map is on the disc. The actual missions and strikes though? Those aren't on the disc as they will be part of the DLC, so if you want to actually play that content, you will need to pay for it.

              • I don't think the Ultra Captain is a Boss. He is just a higher Tier mob. I went to a friends house and watched her Glitch into Kings Watch. The area with the Ultra Captain, Is almost like a Control Room for Launches (spacecraft), Seen the Ghost too. I mean in a way I guess he "Could" be a boss in an actual mission, Sort of like how the Walker in Devils Lair is kind of a mini boss, But he is also there on Patrol. But Kings Watch looks finished, Has level 20 Dreg/Vandals.

                  • Honestly I am pretty livid as well. -blam!- you, activision. -blam!- you for ruining gaming. You are a plague the seeps the soul out of everything you touch, and you and electronic arts are the reason I stopped playing videogames as much as I used to. This game could've been amazing, but you greedy smucks killed it. Yeah, it's fun. Yeah, it's sorta newish. Yeah, it's not terrible. BUT it could've been so much more. Honestly, if the two "DLC's" were incorporated into the -blam!-ing game I would've forked out another 40$ for more DLC, since it would actually be DLC and not already on the -blam!-ing disc that I payed 60 dollars for. It's bad enough you rush game developers and force them to either A. Make a game and hype it tf up or B. Resell the same. -blam!-ing. Shit. Year. After. Year. Do you guys know what DLC is? Obviously not. It's "downloadable content" not "pay thirty bucks to play what was already supposed to be with the final product" In all honesty if they put the dark below and house of wolves in the main game, I would've purchased DLC. However, now I am not going to, unless it's -blam!-ing amazing and knocks my socks off. It better have an amazing story, better dialog, and actually give my starving soul sustenance until the next DLC or game comes out. You have disappointed me, but who am I to you? Who are we as a fan base to you? Pigs ready to be slaughtered for our wallets? I thought this game was going to be so much better than it was, it had so much potential and i was honestly disappointed when I played the beta, realizing how repetitive the game is and how it really doesn't bring anytbing "new and original" to the table. I was even more heartbroken when I found out the real game wasn't any different. Ah. Glad I got that out. Anywho, back to the vault of glass.

All that "Locked Content" was part of the Download once you turn on the game for the first time. What did you think that extra 5 GB download was for? Not cutscenes. I know that much.

                          • I really don't think people are actually upset that the content might be on the disk and they are delivering the game in this way. I think if people felt there was a full campaign, a true working leveling system along with a better functioning game this wouldn't be a big issue. I think people feel like they were not given their monies worth and to get what should have been already delivered they will have to pay for content that already exist on the disk. (This makes you feel like they sacrificed a good honest start to the series all in the name of the mighty dollar.) I personally don't care how they deliver their content, I just want it to be fun and fully functional/complete content. If those requirements are met after a full $60 experience is delivered then I will be a happy customer! For the most part there are things I just love about this game!

Feel free to create your own server and try to generate the game world from that content, or mod it to work in single player etc. Do you also complain about games that are too hard, where you can't even reach the end because you're not good enough, and tell the devs to make it easier so that you can see all the content?
