Bungie, what has happened to you? AKA "Not what we envisioned"

Despite the massive amounts of drama that's been going on behind the closed doors of Bungie, and the loss of several fan favorite employees, I was still hoping that Bungie still had the passion and spark that had shown through in previous games. After the latest patch and a small section of an update, I have come to realize that Bungie has lost its way. In the latest Destiny Dev Notes, the loot cave was briefly addressed. In those two short paragraphs, I realized that the Bungie that we have had for over a decade is gone.
But shooting at a black hole for hours on end isn't our dream for how Destiny is played. Our hope is that social engagement in public spaces is only one part of the Destiny experience.
Those two sentences have set Bungie's new method of operation. Since players aren't playing how the Dev team envisioned, they're going stop players from playing how they want to. That is just staggering to me. I honestly can't believe that a company that went from making one of the most creative video game franchises ever would do something like this. Coming away from Halo, a series that thrives off of players not only playing like they are supposed to, but also taking what's there and doing absolutely absurd and amazing things to have fun, this is utterly mind-boggling to me. What choices we do have as players is so limited, I feel like I'm playing Titanfall, which means not doing anything other than regulated fun. We went from a developer that created playlists with hundreds of maps and gametypes made by the community that blew everyone's minds. You freakin' made Chess and Ski-ball for Halo, who does that? The Old Bungie. Where did the fun go? Where's the passion? Where's the creativity? What happened to this once amazing company that took pride in its community and would even showcase it weekly? What happened to the dev team that showed heart and had the balls to risk a mistake rather than play it safe because it awesome? Where is the pride in your work? Where is the spark that made one of the most influential game series of the past decade? What happened to you Bungie?

  • It is like all of a sudden you forgot about Reach and they never added a title update to the game and ODST where we get a overpriced DLC.

    • They definitely took the cave thing the wrong way. We weren't there because we wanted to, we were there because we had to be. The engram drop was crap, and the Cryptarch was an ass who kept giving us crap. Nothing else dropped engrams quickly, and none of it was worth the time.

      • I can't believe that they didn't already know about the things they have cut in patches. Saying that it was already intended for Atheon to port random players makes me either wonder how many times they played the Atheon fight in testing or why we are now being lied to? What a mess. Who is leading this mess?

      • Are you -blam!-ing kidding me, all of this because the cave has been patched Halo 2 - Rocket/Sword lunge glitch - Patched! Halo 2 - Noob Combo(plasma pistol+BR) - Patched! Halo 2 - SMG+Pistol Dual Combo - Patched! I could go on and on and on... I appreciate you taking the time to write your post in a polite manner but STFU

That is asinine.

        • Well honestly mate the Bungie we knew changed somewhere between odst and Halo Reach. If you recall a lot of the things that happened during Reach are similar to Destiny. Soft caps on marks very similar to credit cap in Reach which took 4-6 hours to hit. Return to battlefield? Also in Reach lazy dev mechanic. Some members moved on with 343 some quit. Bur firing Marty a huge piece in Bungie lore, just goes to show the top 3-4 guys obviously have let greed and money get in the way of community and compassion. TlDR, Bungie we knew is long gone, and clearly they don't care so lets watch them crash and burn like Rare, Dice and many other failed AAA devs.

          • Well Bungie jumped thinking the grass is greener on the other side. But it's not. I don't know what all went on behind the closed doors at Microsoft but what i can tell you is Halo success was not because Bungie made a great IP but rather because it was a PC game made great for a console that was built around the PC and by using the only Online service ( xbox live ) that could handle the flawless transition of online play and voice chat and stat tracking. The then PSN free online service would not even been able to handle the influx of people in the lobby. There is no doubt that xbox made Halo and Halo helped make the xbox a competitor to Sony. Had it not been for the partnership of both.. I think both would be a Has been story. I fear Bungie's fate will be the same as any IP that Activision gets their greedy hands on. Take a look at what happened to Red Octane. ( Guitar Hero ) RedOctane became a wholly owned subsidiary of Activision in 2006. In February 2010, Activision closed the RedOctane division. Activision reportedly paid RedOctane $99.9 million in cash and common stock in the acquisition. In 26 months since first release, Guitar Hero generated over $1B in sales. On February 11, 2010, Activision announced the closure of their RedOctane division. Any guesses as to why they closed them? Has nothing to do with the popularity of Guitar / Hero Instead the opposite. Activision flooded the market having at one time as much as 4 games out in the same year competing against themselves. Hell they even gave away for free GH Van Halen during Christmas . They ruined a great company and they ruin a great franchise. History will repeat itself again.

            • They have somebody running things that doesn't know what they're doing in regard to the fan base. They suckered the money out of us to pay for this project and whatever else happens, that person couldn't care less. Give it another 5 years and people will start hating video games because of the shady business practices. I will never pre-order anything.

Actually those 2 sentences show that they are trying to figure out why anyone would want to stand in one spot for hours and fire into a black hole because its more fun and rewarding than the game itself. Because the loot cave exploit was better than the game for some players means that the actual game is that bad at launch. Its a amazing to me that they had to even think about this and change spawn timers because anyone would resort to this. The base game is a misfire and now they have to figure out how to make it to December and keep players. Leveling was far too quick, the campaign was far too short and the grind is far too long. End game is not a hamster wheel in successful games. Its engaging encounters, additional lore and story, new mechanics and challenges and awesome experiences. Like all rookies to long term online only games that require socialization and team work, Bungie has not figured out how to provide character progression and a satisfying and challenging end game to sustain interest.

            • Hello. You must be new. This isn't about making sure you're happy when you pick up your copy. This is about money. And this is a valid strategy to ensure MAXIMUM ENJOYMENT. Nah but really it's about money. You can still go and shoot at the cave, no one is preventing you from doing that. They have not taken anything away from you by nerfing the cave. They have balanced their own product, so that several million people all haven't bought a game just to shoot into a tunnel. Now people no longer feel like they have to, to keep up. You're still ever as welcome as before in standing there doing your thing. Perhaps even more, because now people wont hate you for it ;)

              • I have to agree. I keep on most trending and popular discussions and other than the engrams, none of those fixes were in the top forums. But they read them? My theory is that they glance at the forums. Play the game and then change what they, not the forums, feel is wrong. It is still perplexing though these guys are nobodies fool, so what the hells going on. Cause they don't act like old Bungie. I played Halo and the story was done well so what happened.

              • Agree for the most part, also Bungie should have taken notice that thousands of players would RATHER stand and shoot into a dark hole for 5 straight hours because the game is just so fun

              • It's gotta be activi$ion. That's all I can guess. Here is my theory... Activision looked at other games And tried to fill a niche that fills their pockets more than the normal. Halo. Normal. Lasted so far about 10 years or so. With 1,2,3, odst, reach. Each one had new skins. New sounds. New story. New maps. New new new. All this takes time. Time is money. They had a holy blam! Idea. Lookin at warframe here. What if... We made the structure of an awesome game... And had updates (to pay for) instead of whole new games. No new skins, operating system, ai, skins, bla bla bla. In the end we got a half ass game(for the sake of stretching it out). With the plan of "expansions" every 6 months. Pay smaller amounts every 6 months with less work than making a new game every 3 years. I you were a dev. What would you choose. It's not right.

                  • Well the news they released today is a step in the right direction. So we have to praise the good decisions and of course speak out in regards to the poor decisions. I have been speaking out in defense of gamers who have been disappointed up to this point. But it seems they are going in the right direction now. We just need to continue to leave them serious feedback that they can take seriously. However I do think they need to bring some more substantial content to the game free of charge considering the amount of content they gave us on day one was not nearly as much content as they led us to believe pre-release.

                    • Nah man, they're just fixing a balance issue with this. Ever hear of dominant strategy? It tells that if there's one way of doing something that's quicker and easier, more efficient, even if it's not as fun or rewarding, people will inevitably use it. Very few people were standing in front of a cave for hours because it just delighted them to sit and fire endlessly, no. It was simply a means to easier loot, quicker. So. Bungie saw an issue with that. 'It's boring to do that, but it beats trying to grind In our game regularly because the drops are unreliable'. Seems to be what they see as the problem, and here they are, clearly fixing the loot drop and cryptarch issues. But you know, whatever. Bungie is the Antichrist, Activision is the devil! The employees are all a corporate hivemind! Hang 'em all!

                      • From the next patch notes: "Legendary Engram items that exist in your inventory will be demoted to Rare quality when the patch goes live, so decode them while you can. But let’s be honest--even if you don’t, we all know they were blues already..." What's wrong is their attitude. It's all in the last sentence. They were nice enough to nerf caves, but did not bother to make the cryptarch work properly. You get to pick up fewer blues and purples now and have less chance to get the proper rewards. That is the story line of this game...NO REWARDS, and NO CARE.
