Emma Watson joins the fray in the feminist crusade

Instead of twitter, a blog or some other method, she went straght to the UN and made a speech there. I think she may find herself at helm of the fight after doing this.

  • I see no one in offtopic knows what feminism is, STILL. But whatever. From what I am seeing... I may just leave again.

  • I think there should be gender equality but the problem is there are a bunch of crazy people currently hijacking feminism(the movement, not the belief). I'll support it the second those crazy people (Anita Sarkeesian, Zoe Quinn, Rebecca Watson) are kicked out and not treated like role models rather than liars and oppurtunists they are. I've been told that my beliefs fit the definition of a feminist and I will always support equal rights but I will not support crazy people. The rational feminists are the ones I won't mind supporting but until the crazy people are treated like crazy people I won't support the movement as a whole.

    • Good for her! But if she wants to end the stigma of feminism = man hatred, she should speak to the radical feminists and tell them that feminism isn't about hating men.

      • I totally support her message and may even look into the organization she helped start , heforshe. But like others have said, it should also be a sub-initiative to inform extreme feminists to get off their high horses and realize you cant just blame men and call it a day.

          • I'm all for equal rights. But, you better expect the negatives of equal rights along with the positives. Also, most feminists nowadays are just feminazis.

                • Lol, women already have equal rights in civilised society, unfortunately the generation at the helm today are still the remnants of a sexist era long gone, if they could calm their tits snd wait 20 years they'd have full equality in practice as well as on paper

                    • So... Let me get this straight. She graduated from Brown, a top school, is really smart, well spoken etc... She puts together a speech, delivers it to the UN, gets applause there, but all of the basement dwelling teens who used to worship her suddenly are better informed and educated than her.... Seems legit.

The only thing I want to say is that in most first world countries most females do have equal rights. In fact in some places they are more likely to get off with murder. Everyone knows that men cheat more then women. But statistics show that women cheat in the relationship more then men but women are usually the ones brings it up more than men. People say that we objectify women but it would be a lot harder if (I am not making a generalization I just can't think of a better way to put it.) they wore less slutty cloths. Basically I am saying that women have equal rights. To video games most of the games I play you don't expect to see women killing but that is because of our raising. I promote women fighting but there are facts like men have more upper body strength and less weak points (like mammary glands). Women can shot better generally so I would say she be a sniper not a front liner. I am not sexist I just look at the facts. Women are seen as cleaner so when a man has an affair everyone expects it. When a woman has an affair no one sees it coming. That is way women are beat up on the news

                        •
If she wants to end the stigma of feminism = man hatred, she should speak to the radical feminists and tell them that feminism isn't about hating men.
Pretty much this. Moderate feminists can refer to the dictionary definition of contemporary feminism until the cows come home. It doesn't matter what the definition originally conveyed, it's what the movement is being perceived as now. The likes of Anita Sarkeesian, Zoe Quinn and Femitheist etc aren't exactly doing wonders for the image of feminism. If she wants to eliminate feminist stigmas, then addressing all these morally reprehensible people and calling them out on their bullshit is absolutely paramount.

                          • Let's see what thought-provoking topics feminism has brought to light today.
Goodwill Ambassador for UN Women
Just curious, who's the Goodwill ambassador for UN men? I don't recall hearing who that is, but it'd be nice to find out. Let's continue.
Feminism by definition.
>definition No surprises there. Marriage by definition is the unity between husband and wife, so I'm sure I'll be seeing Emma protesting against gay marriage soon because it doesn't fit the definition and definitions, as we all know, are the be all and end all of everything.
When I was 8 I was called "bossy".
Let me call Guinness World Records and ask them if I can borrow the world's smallest violin so I can play a song on it just for you, Emma. That story reduced me to tears ;_; 2sad4me #cut4emma. I love how this is coming from an extremely popular celebrity with fame and fortune. Looks like being called bossy really hurt you. Some wounds never heal ;'(
"My girl friends started dropping out of their beloved sports teams because they didn't want to appear muscly".
So your friends made decisions for themselves in a free society? Decisions YOU don't agree with? Good one. Reminds me of groups that demand more women in STEM fields and the like, as if women aren't fewer in numbers there because not as many of them as men WANT to work there. "Why aren't you making the choices I want you to make!" #Oppression
I want men to take up this mantle. So their daughters, sisters and mothers can be free from prejudice

I would like to take this opportunity to extend your formal invitation. Gender equality is your issue, too."
"We want to welcome men with open arms into this discussion to discuss all the problems they've created and how they can fix themselves to become human beings like the rest of us." All the same embarrassing non-issue bullshit we've been propogandised by since day one. And once again everyone buckles and applauds without question for fear of looking bad. It's a complete circlejerk for these higher-ups to look like good people in front of the cameras. Get back to me when these clowns do something worth talking about.

                            • I really want to meet someone that doesn't agree that women should have equal rights, or that gender/sex roles ought to be reduced in a highly advanced society. You see them on TV (typically old, white, republicans guys), but never in person. This has been going on strongly for years now, and it's generally the same speech, and whether subtly or not, it tends to be oppositional in the same way we say we're "fighting" cancer or other diseases, and to me, though it's definitely unintentional on the feminist part, I always feel like I've done something wrong, and I think that pushes support away. Constantly being told you're privileged and lack perspective isn't helpful, and presents the assumption that being a white male is like easy-mode for life. It diminishes the human struggle we face individually and as a species. It's good Watson avoided using that language, and I thought her speech was very compelling.
