How viable is melee in combat really?

I only have experience as a Striker, advertised as THE melee class. In PvP, Melee just seems like a last resort, as opposed to an integral part of combat a la Halo. Auto-Rifles and Fusion rifles seem to take players down too quickly to encourage putting a few rounds in someone then going in for a melee finish. If you do find a way to close the gap or meet someone in an enclosed space, chances are you'll have a nice Shotgun waiting to pump a round in your face as soon as you get in range. The only time I ever see anyone resort to melee is when neither players are not wielding a Shotgun in an enclosed map (unlikely) and both are caught by surprise. And even then it usually results in both players trading kills because of the netcode. In PvE, it really does not seem worth while. You can generally pump out a lot more damage by just unloading more rounds into an enemy as opposed to unloading rounds into an enemy whilst moving in for a melee. If it's not a trash enemy that will survive past the melee, chances are he's going to melee you right back and you're going to take a lot more damage than he is. Further, several bosses have an "instant disintegration" like attack if you move in for melee. Though, I have found that if you can catch a stronger enemy who is distracted by another player you can move in and melee then quickly move out before he can counter attack. All in all, I'd say melee is pretty lacking which is disappointing because I chose Striker because I thought melee would be a large part of the class. Storm Fist is pretty underwhelming and does not decrease the amount of melee hits it would take to kill a target in PvP unless you're facing someone who is not specced into armor at all. Strength is supposed to be the primary stat that you are supposed to be building on a Titan yet I have not found a single Striker who consistently attempts to use Storm Fist on cooldown. . It is in my humble opinion that Storm Fist should always be a one-hit KO. Other classes are supposed to be afraid to see Strikers in close-quarters, yet there's not more reason to worry about a Striker than a Bladedancer with a Shotgun. I do not have any experiences with the Raid. Anyone care to share their experiences with melee in VoG or just melee in general?

  • Storm fist is somewhat lacking in PVP, yes- but then you have Shoulder Charge. I cannot express how satisfying this is. Yes, you have to build it up by running, it can wear of, and it can miss altogether, but in narrow or closed maps like Delphi.... my God, I wreck teams using that. On top of that, Fist of Havoc is the perfect OH SH-- super to use when you just turned a corner and suddenly there´s two enemy players aiming at you. Granted, SC may not be able to compete with Blink Strike, but it can be performed at any time.
