Would you buy a $60 dollar book....

Imagine if you bought a book that a writer has been making for the last few years. Before release date, you don't know anything, everything is a mystery. You get the book on launch night with a bunch of eager readers. You get home and get excited, the book looks like it's over 900 pages. You flip through the beginning and get to the preface. You read it and are absolutely confused but still, have hope for the actual story. CHAPTER 1..... Chapter 1 does not release until after 2 weeks the book has been out.... the pages that contain the content are blank. The writer has found some kind of invisible ink to make it so that it won't be able to be seen until the book has been out for 2 weeks. ..... 2 weeks past and what do you get to see from the 1st chapter, 1 paragraph. Yup, one. And if you want some background info on what's going on you have to go to the authors website, because he also makes a few bucks with the traffic he gets with everyone going to his domain. Is this a good marketing strategy for a book? Would you willing buy this book? Because that's what destiny's story is. Stop defending it. "Oh you don't understand, it didn't start".... Shut up. I understand that I payed well over 80 dollars just for game play. The mechanics are great, but that's it. How can you be okay with this and defend this story? Half the time I thought my character was a mute and there's only 5 characters in the story that have no name. Come on really? EDIT!: People think I'm comparing the book to the ENTIRE game. I'm comparing it to the story. The gameplay is fine. I have no quarrels with it. In fact this post wouldn't have even been made if I thought the game as a whole was garbage because I wouldn't have even bothered. However because I've clocked in almost 50 hours of gameplay, I can't help but feel the story is lacking

  • This is funny, usually you buy a game, and that's it. For Light's sake, there isn't even a subscription cost... We have stuff changing daily and being added. Last time I checked CoD charged me full price for anything extra and made me wait a month on PS. Just a suggestion but just chill, I spend nearly twice as much on groceries just for myself than Destiny costs...

  • I'd probably rather spend $60 on getting you a better analogy... There is more to the game than just story. If said book came with plenty of activities to do rather than just a prologue then I'd be cool with that. For your analogy of the "prologue only book" to work you'd have to point out that said book could also be used for 6v6 reading battles and 3 person shared story experiences not to mention a special "Raid" chapter. Said book could also let you change its colour and style and you could unlock cool bookmarks and other gizmo's. You're only focusing on one element and trying to represent that as your analogy. I mean, nice attempt at a new angle on the "waaaaa Bungie didn't make this game to suits my tastes so now I have to cry on the internet" shtick, but honestly... There's pvp to the game, fun missions, rep with factions etc. and the games only been out a couple of weeks and already we've had special events, Raids and pvp zones to keep content fresh. Look, I understand it doesn't meet your requirements for a game. In life not everything will meet your personal expectations, that is par for the course. It's sad for you I guess, but there are plenty of people having a great time. Put this purchase down to bad luck/research/impulse buying and maybe challenge yourself to wait a week or two when the next game you want comes out. That way perhaps you won't be so disappointed. *shrugs*

  • wheel of time series by robert jordan. whole entire first book is introducing characters. no emotional attachment just laying the foundation for a really really long series. thats what bungie is doing giving you great gameplay on a foundation to which you will keep grasping for the small tidbits they feed you keeping you coming back for more thats how these kind of games works. everyone right now is mad because they are starving for the story. soon as bungie throws another scrap everyone is going to gobble it up with a ravenous appetite. the problem is people are impatient. they want instant gratification the want the whole thing right now and when they get it they are done and they move on to the next thing. bungie has NEVER failed at telling a great story and i dont think they are about to now. we just have to be patient. and as far as paying 60 dollars for just this very first part. well the wheel of time series has a total of 14 books hard back are about 30 dollars a piece i gladly paid for everyone and just about anyone who loves to read would do the same. 420 bucks for the complete story and i love gaming more than reading so yes i will buy each scrap and tidbit they put out patiently waiting for the next one because a good story is told in parts and leaves the reader hanging at the end of each one to keep the readers coming back for seconds.

  • It's a game, not a book for one. Secondly, the first Halo game's story was the same and in that version there were no terminals to add story background as there are in the latter editions of the game. Halo was an intro into the Halo story and universe. Destiny is the same in that respect, except Destiny has more story material than what Halo did. There are a number of games that don't make much sense on the story front based on the first game. Halo, Assassins Creed, CoD: Modern Warfare, Hitman, Dark Sector and many others. If you want to play a game with a full story play an RPG. I for one was happy to pay for Destiny knowing that the story was only going to scratch the surface. The DLC may gives us some more snippets, but Destiny 2 will be where the story begins to develop.

      • I totally agree. With luck the rest of the chapter 1 will be released as "free content", but the chapters to follow will be 30-60 bucks as if each of them was a new book, but again, they are part of the original book. I'm pretty sure that more than half of the cost of the game is just marketing to deny its flaws.

      • How many other games make you pay for dlc? All of them. This isn't a new concept. If they choose to draw out the story then so be it. Don't like it, don't buy it. Simple. I have one thing to say. Titanfall has noooo story at all and et it received such high praise. People just want to tear this game down because it doesn't give them everything they want right away.

      • I buy a case of beer for 20 and it lasts a week 12 bottles that is of sam Adams or something zesty... Now here is 60 on a game that's been a lot of fun and just for 60 I get a lot of good times and still more to look forward to. I'd happily fork over another 120 for what some of you are calling the rest of the game.

      • The story was inconsistent and didn't explain much. The grimoires have really cool lore to fill out the world, but not the story. So I agree with that. However you're arguing two points. The quality of the story, and the way its being released. The way its being released is a separate MMO-style/standard story...and there's nothing wrong with that. The main story should have been done differently. I wasn't expecting Mass Effect levels of story telling, but I'm a bit bummed that the pacing and tone either didn't exist or was all over the place. It reminds me of The Bourne Identity series. This guy has no idea who he is, but is thrown right in to the action. He's also really good at fighting and knowing different languages. However, he's questioning and is trying to figure out how he got in this situation. In Destiny, there is no questioning but there is also no explicit reason why we aren't questioning being "reborn." I think even if we are altruistic or loyal, or brainwashed guardians the story needs to tell us. And this is just one problem out of many. There's a thousand different ways you could go about it, but I would have tied a personal story, (your own, or a side character's) to parallel the main story, about the darkness and traveler. Also the grimoires and those other stories should be in game. There was an awesome one with Cayde I think, and I could imagine if that was a flashback or quest repeated to it, it would give more meaning to the game and to the world. Right now, story-wise its just go here, do this over and over again, with no real purpose. I don't think, however, that this is the biggest deal in the world, because I'm having fun and think that future content will explicitly flesh more of the world out.

I am a fan of how the lore/story in this game is done. I am a huge Dark Souls fan where the lore isn't made clear to you unless you go out of your way and look for it by reading item descriptions and stuff, it so rewarding finding out lore that way IMO. With this game if you read the grimiores the lore is pretty good, which isn't a problem for me because I have the companion app and my iphone right beside me, so I read grimiores entries as I get them. I understand people don't want to go to another device to read the grimiores and tbh not having them in game is idiotic.

        • I don't know how people can defend the story. It is poorly told, even for a first chapter in this game. Hell, even the Speaker tells you "Well, I could tell you, but I won't" kind of thing. Your character has no reaction to being brought back alive, hell, he hardly has a personality, same goes for the enemies. Saying that people need to rely on the grimoire, which isn't in the game, is also a poor way of telling your lore and story. I very much love the story in games, but so far (underlined for obvious emphasis) is quite lacking. Look, I very much enjoy this game, but the campaign thus far is "Hey Peter, go unlock this while I go cover you and shoot waves of baddies" along with no answers. I'll equip my flame shield, but I'm no hating on the game. I'm saying the campaign as far as it is, as of this moment, is lacking. Just trying to make it clear I don't hate the game, but dislike the direction the story is going. I'll equip my Scorch Shield now.

            • Thing with mmo's... The story doesn't end. How many people looked forward to a story in all seriousness anyway? Not being a smartass, but I'm the type that gets pissed when I can't skip cut scenes... Setting and gameplay are what I like about destiny, was the beta that sold me. I know a death star came to earth, we spread like a virus through the solar system, and we're killing a bunch of other beings that want what we have... Plenty of a story for me

              • I... Uh. I think that's a horrible comparison that doesn't quite analyze why the "story was bad". To clarify, I agree with the OP about the story being dreadful, but it doesn't have to do with the lack of content being released at launch. The promise of something more down the road does not negate the amateur script, the lack of any character depth whatsoever, the poor cinematographic work in cutscenes, the ill attempts at explaining any lore at all and how little is in this universe that makes you feel like you actually want to protect it. There's no investment. No intrigue. No characters to get attached to or exciting possibilities in a new IP's lore to analyze and adapt. We have this big, beautiful sci-fi universe that is completely devoid of character-- and it really says something about the plot as a whole if I get to the final boss and I don't even realize it's the finale until the credits start rolling.

Bungie did bad because you have to read the grimmore cards to get the story but with the people now a days...... they don't read and want it read to them. Remember FF7 was a greatest hit and you read the whole time. Geeeeezzzz people open a book (grimmore) card once in a while :-)
