Destiny sets an awful precedent in the industry

Destiny's launch was a financial success. It doesn't deserve to be. It set a precedent that as long as you combine a renowned studio and a publisher with huge pockets with can get away with selling an empty shell of a game for full price. People who bought the regular destiny edition get this that we have right now and that's it. For more they have to buy the future expansions. That is not ok, it should never be ok. The destiny universe has me interested. I will play the expansions and likely stick with it. Seeing how it evolves. But it doesn't deserve to. Based only on the game that we have now, destiny is an empty shell of a game, without anything resembling good story telling or mission variety. It merely sets the setting. It shows potential. That's it. Destiny demands that you buy expansions and DLC in the future to have a full experience, it shouldn't. If you're going to charge full price that give people a full game. Otherwise charge people 30 bucks to launch your "expansion selling platform". That is what the destiny that went on sale on September 9th is, an expansion platform sold under the disguise of a full game and all the promises of great story telling and huge worlds where we would (and I quote:) "never get bored". It doesn't deliver on it, the destiny that launched is only a platform to eventually deliver on those promises. It should have been priced accordingly. (Read my second post below) Many people that have the same opinion as mine have been playing destiny and enjoying it (as do I). Just because we are able to criticise it, just because we don't think it's perfect doesn't been we "hate it" or are "bashing it" as some people can't seem to understand. Nowadays almost every single AAA game from a major publisher is made and sold hoping for it to be successful enough to become a franchise with many future sequels and paid DLC for each one. That has become the norm already. Saying that a game's universe will be expanded over 10 years is not a reasonable argument. The problem is that in a lot of ways destiny 1.0 does not feel like a complete game on it's own. I have the digital guardian edition, so I already know I will be playing the first two of said expansions. And even if I had somehow pre-ordered the entire 10 years worth of content that doesn't change the Destiny we have NOW. And that is why it's my option that destiny's financial success is setting a bad precedent for those of us who like games. A precedent of expansion selling platforms being sold as full games when in fact they are not: destiny as it stands does not feel like a complete game. Activision is already getting the results and Ubisoft and EA are closely watching as is the rest of the industry. My problem is not with extended cuts (DLC) or sequels, I read all the Harry Potter books when I was a child, lol But this doesn't feel like a full book in a series, it feels like the prologue and the very first chapters, only. A set up that will only start to be delivered in future paid expansions. Something that is standing on potential and bungie's reputation from past work. And not on it's own merit, not on it's own achievements. That is what many people that are playing and enjoying Destiny criticise. The destiny game that was launched shows potential, and the bungie logo at the beginning tells us to trust that that potential will be eventually realised but on it's own it falls short and feels incomplete. Potential alone is not enough to realise your destiny (pun intended).

  • This is not the first time a game has done this. Seriously, this kind of bullshit has been going on for years. Activision probably wanted to suck as much money as they could out of this game. If it were Bungies choice, I'll bet we'd have the whole game up front.
