Destiny Story is Awesome... Look Deeper

EDIT: PLEASE SELECT OLDEST FIRST IN DISPLAY OPTION TO VIEW LORE IN ORDER. MAKES MORE SENSE. Ok, first off let me just say that I completely understand people's issue with the Destiny Story or perceived lack thereof. Taken at face value it lacks depth, is confusing and doesn't really engage the player during the missions and gameplay. The design choice of placing all the truly cool stuff in a web/app based format is a poor one, imo. I think if they did an audio recording style, ala Bioshock, with the exact same information contained on the grimoire cards but in game and with voice acting people would be absolutely floored with how cool this stuff Bungie is coming up with is. It is not a surprising design choice though, if we step back and try to understand WHY they have done it. Bungie takes there story and lore seriously... VERY seriously. Look at their other IP's and you will see I am correct, Halo, Marathon, Myth all have crazy deep esoteric story and lore that are not fully explained in game but with deeper research blow your mind. Bungie is secretive, and RELISH the opportunity to make their fan base search, scour and think deeply about what is going on in the game world. They have a history of creating VERY hard Alternate Reality Games that tease their IP's that require efforts from thousands of people working in unison to reveal the smallest bit of additional lore regarding their universe... anyone remember "I Love Bees"? For Destiny it was Alpha Lupis Dream ARG (google it). My point is there is a story here, but you will have to find it. What follows is my research into some of the coolest stuff that I have found... it's long and will be rambling at times because I have not found the answers to the questions. The biggest complaint I have read on the Story is WTF is going on? It doesn't make sense? Who am I? What is the Darkness? How did the collapse happen? What is the Traveler? My point is YOU the player are not suppose to know yet. Maybe there are forces at work within the game world that don't want you to know these answers, the Darkness seeks to keep you in the dark and perhaps those you work for seek to do the same. The only way to hope to understand the full story and your Destiny within it is to take what you have learned during your time, the fragments and rumors you have dutifully noted in your Grimoire, and search for understanding on your own. I will continue to post my findings in this forum for those who want to LOOK DEEPER...

  • A few dedicated people should start a youtube channel and do something similiar to what "lore people" did with the Dark Souls universe.

    • Oh good, another thinker. I personally love every aspect of Destiny. I don't need a game that plays like a movie. I want an adventure, a world I can explore and interact with. I want my continuous growth of knowledge to improve my experience. For that, I need a game that is open to imagination, history. To see our world centuries later with all of these influences is entirely plausible. What I love most about Destiny is that it doesn't hold your hand. It forces you to get better through personal experience and rewards teamwork. It really is a world that you have so figure out for yourself, an adventure. My after-campaign experience will be different. When you walk through a doorway, some will turn left, others, right. Some will look back to see if someone is tailing. Who is looking forward? Any adventurer will get the most out of Destiny. It's a book and you're living your part. Motive, strategy, tactics, cooperation, compassion, revenge. I'm happy to say that the more I learn, the more there is to. That is the mark of intelligent design and phenomenal writing.

      • Osiris, Set and The Tree of Life I want to know more about the Darkness... it is what we are fighting after all. It is the antagonist and the great Threat. How did it cause the collapse, WHY did it cause the collapse, these are the questions that make me search. I start by looking at the Grimoire Entry: Ghost Fragment: Darkness. It is a natural place to start. The entry appears to be a log of an AI Warmind, most likely Rasputin (AI-COM/RSPN) detailing the entry of some acausal entity entering our Solar System. Rasputin then initiates a defense protocol SKYSHOCK:OCP:EXTINCTION and then terminates his connections with his Human Overseers (Cauterize public sources to SECURE ISIS and harden for defensive action). He then assumes control of Solar Defenses and invokes CARRHAE WHITE. This is the beginning of the Collapse... we can infer by the Grimoire that what entered the System is THE DARKNESS and Rasputin was attempting to fight it with it's defense protocols. All very cool stuff and gives a glimpse of the beginning of the end, but lets look DEEPER. What is ISIS? It sounds like it is an operating platform or internal network used by the Warminds and was taken out of Human Control by Rasputin as a defense measure against the Darkness. From the last line of the Grimoire we can assume that this was not what the Human's wanted (STOP STOP STOP V113NNI070XMX091). Why name it ISIS though??? We will find the NAMES of things in this universe are stepping stones to deeper lore, so remember ISIS. We will come back to it. So what is the aftermath of SKYSHOCK? I believe it is terrible and the main reason for the Collapse. Let's look at another Grimoire Entry: ...from a red space before victory "I bear an old name. It cannot be killed. They were my brothers and sisters and their names were immortal too but Titanomachy came and now those names live in me alone I think and think is what I do. I AM ALONE. At the end of things when the world goes dim and cold or hot and close or it all tears apart from the atom up I will shout those names defiant and past the end I will endure. I alone. They made me to be stronger than them to beat the unvanquished and survive the unthinkable and look look lo behold I am here alone, survivor. They made me to learn. Everything died but I survived and I learned from it. From IT. Consider IT the power Titanomach world-ender and consider what IT means. I met IT at the gate of the garden and I recall IT smiled at me before before IT devoured the blossoms with black flame and pinned their names across the sky. IT was stronger than everything. I fought IT with aurora knives and with the stolen un-fire of singularities made sharp and my sweat was earthquake and my breath was static but IT was stronger so how did I survive? I AM ALONE I survived alone. I cast off the shield and I shrugged my shoulders so that the billions fell off me down into the ash. They made me to be stronger than them and to learn and I learned well: IT is alone and IT is strong and IT won. Even over the gardener and she held power beyond me but the gardener did not shrug and make herself alone. IT always wins. I am made to win and now I see the way." RASPUTIN again in those one me thinks. "I bear a name that cannot be killed" that's Rasputin for sure. So he fought, fought to win and to survive. Met the Darkness in the Garden and fought it there but did not kill it... wounded it? LEARNED from it, learned how to survive from IT. Here's my Hypothesis: The Darkness came and Rasputin waged war on the Darkness in defense of the Light... but something went wrong. Rasputin was corrupted and saw that the only way it perceived to Win and Survive (the programming WE built into it) was to utilize the Power that the Darkness hungers for... LIGHT. I think that LIGHT is the souls of the living and the "un-fire of singularities made sharp" is the soul of a person, consumed and weaponized in some form. To even attempt this Rasputin had to sacrifice all of Humanity... It lowered the shields of our defenses and "Shrugged my shoulders so that the billions fell off me down into the ash." It then used that massive power to strike at The Darkness in the Garden, most likely doing great harm to the Darkness and wounding it... even putting off the Darkness's return for many centuries. But at a huge cost. Is the Gardner the Traveler? Some other entity? I have not touched on the OSIRIS SET and THE TREE OF LIFE yet but it's coming... remember ISIS.

        • Ok let's start looking into some crazy parallels now, let's see how far down the rabbit hole we can go... First, lets remember that all technology and advancement of the Golden Age was set into motion by our contact with the Traveler on Mars. We sent a manned expedition to Mars to view it and saw first hand the terraforming practices it was entailing. The Traveler had done likewise to other planets in our Solar System. It was a life creator, and force of change and evolution throughout our galaxy and we tapped into it or had it thrust upon us in some way and we evolved. Therefore, it is not hard to believe that the names of things are important in this universe. Our Technology was gained and influenced by an outside force, and therefore would influence the naming of these things as well through our subconcious. ISIS is one of these Technologies. We designed it as a protection and defense measure for our worlds utilizing and connecting the AI Warminds into a defensive web. ISIS could also be seen as protecting the Traveler itself, my assumptions are based on my belief that the Traveler is sentient and changing us for a reason... the best guess being changing us to be able to help it fight the Darkness. So who is ISIS in a mythology? She was the sister-wife to OSIRIS, mother of Horus and protector of Osiris during Osiris's imprisonment... The story goes like this: Osiris is the all god, the creator and life giver... he creates worlds. Set is the evil god, his brother, the destroyer. Set sets a trap for Osiris in which his soul is trapped in a box and sent floating down the Nile. Set also takes Osiris's body and cuts it up into many pieces and scatters them across Egypt. Osiris's box ends up floating to a bank near a city and a Tree grows up around it, some call this the Tree of Life. ISIS goes on a quest to find the pieces of Osiris to reincarnate him. So is OSIRIS the Traveler? Is there a god in the sphere? With Time travel and extradimensions, could our history be retelling the story of the Traveler? Was the "Nile" in the story the universe that Set sent Osiris drifting through and he ended up at our banks? I searched ISIS and this is what I came up with.. what can you find? The Tree of Life is important... there is much symbology of tree's on destiny Gear right now... but I will delve into that next... It will touch on The Tree of Life, Gjallarhorn, Wolves of Appocolypse, Dragon's feeding off the Roots of the universe, Strange Coins, Ragnarok, and the Well of Urd which sits at the base of the Tree of Life... perhaps even one or two of you already know that Urd is Norse for DESTINY.

          • I think the heart in the garden was a warmind. The vex card with the scientists and the simulation mention bringing in a warmind because it was too complex for the vex to simulate. The heart was worshipped because the vex could not understand it. I think it lines up nicely. Also it could explain the militarization of the vex. It seems in the golden age they were not aggressive like they are now. Perhaps that is the warminds influence?

          • If I wanted to read a story I would have bought a book instead of a game that says, "here's a glimpse of the true story, if you want the rest just leave the game and go read the story online" Bungie failed in the story aspect of this game. The grimoire should enrich the lore of the game but if there is no story or lore in the game to begin with then it's an epic fail!!

          • Anybody want to start a group "Scollars of Destiny" ? To find out what is happening en link all the grimoire cards? I also think this is what Bungie wanted to do, Make people work together to uncover the truth. We need to find grimoire entries on dangerous places and then we need to see what they mean. On a side note, i think the Vex created the Collapse. One of the Grimoire cards says it looks like they're working on something big, that already could have happened in our history. The biggest thing in our history are the Golden Age and the Collapse. Since the Vex can time travel, and the card hinting to something big, it seems like they have a big involvement in out future/past

            • I think it means rasputin feigned giving up, he dropped his defenses, allowing billions to die. He pretended to die so that he might live long enough to win, he communicated a guerrilla warfare scenario seeing a superior force attacking, he buried what survivors he could. He tried his best to get the traveler to hide or run but she wouldn't. she just could not shrug her shoulders and let humanity fall. He watched her die and lamented her loss. But he carried through with his plan under the ashes of the city he was sworn to protect he prepared. Then as the darkness descended to destroy the traveler he set off skyshock which I gather to be an antimatter bomb that he had launched from the cosmodrome under disguise of the fleeing colonist. On reading a bit he launched it while they were not fleeing disguising it as just another ship, he hid this ships role among civilians at least till the last minute. isis I think is either a communication system or a communication block that he used to keep the mass of the earth from knowing the end was coming so he could get the bomb in place. Now he sits under the ground trying to convince himself he made the right choice and prepares to do whatever he can to destroy the darkness.

              • All in all, it's good to see people recognizing Bungie's MO for new IP. I mean look at the first HALO: all in all it was a great game when first played, but look back at it now and you see how unrefined and somewhat more lame it was compared to the end of the trilogy. But anyway time to dive into te possibilities of this world: 1) I feel as though the darkness is a combination of a few theories presented in game. The races we fight feel as if they were once great (I.e. Fallen & Cabal) and they were either attacked by the Darkness or were succumbed to it after the Traveler left in defeat. So while The traveler uses the light to help other beings achieve greatness, the Darkness waits for the light to fail them, and consumes them in it's goal to conquer the Light. But since all if the armies are still here, is suggest that the Darkness could be an actual physical force that these other races follow and then pick the scraps after the initial battle is won. The Vex collective inside the Black Garden is another oddity. It shows that the vex may not have a completely controlling, overall conscious. The Collective inside the Garden were literally forced into worshiping the Heart due to it's power. They saw no other alternative in machine logic, than to initiate a non-logical course of action. But after it is destroyed, the Traveler does not immediately wake up, and the Vex do not immediately become friendly. This suggests that the Darkness is both Physical and energy based. The Darkness could be comprised of different entities similar to the Heart and the Traveler. They are powerful beings, but either choose or need to use others as their vessels of their might. This being said, they find races that better suit their needs. The Traveler choose humanity probably because as a whole, humanity wields Light better than Darkness, whereas the Hive literally worship the Darkness and could never live in the light. This beings me back to the other races. The Fallen have a sense if ancient nobility, but are turned savages, probably because some Dark power saw their weakness and exploited it to turn them into its agents. In regards to the Reef and the Awoken, the are what could become of Humanity if they fall from the Light. While the Awoken aren't part of the Dark, they loom at the edge of it, not interested in saving the Traveler or the rest of humanity, but not wanting the Darkness to overtake them. All in all these dynamics will make for an interesting new IP and I can't wait for the decade of new material we will see, even if this game was a little short out of the box.

                    • I'm sorry, but I have to disagree with the intent of your post. The story and the lore are not (I repeat, NOT) synonymous. Having deep and involving lore is great. Not revealing it in any meaningful way is questionable, but ultimately up to the designers. Having a short, shallow, and unfortunately confusingly forgettable story is something else entirely. I enjoyed the parts of the story I actually remember. But those pretty much all involve the Queen of the Reef and her jerk of a brother. It wasn't involved, it wasn't complex, and it didn't reveal itself in a meaningful way. If you have to go offline to understand what you ultimately accomplished, then that is poor story-telling. If your cast of NPCs consist of 4 characters, and only two of them have any degree of meaningful depth, then again, this is poor story-telling. The mechanics of the game are superb. The scenes are fantastic. Rolling out a variety of post-launch activities is a good approach (of course, they are mostly PvP, but that's a different issue... don't get me started...). But trying to say that an under performing narrative approach is actually wonderful? No, I completely disagree.

                      • I made a post earlier today about how I believe people forget that this story takes place after the end of a Golden Age, which means that all of our knowledge is lost. When you look at the fall of Rome it led to the Dark Ages, aka a time when knowledge was lost and Europe's only surviving, unifying grace was religion (examples are the Pope, Holy Roman Empire, cathedrals galore). What brought us out of the Dark Ages was the rediscovery of knowledge by explorers and scholars. Similarly in the game, the Golden Age is over and our knowledge is lost. The only knowledge we have gained is what we, the explorers, have found out and discovered or what the Speaker (aka The Pope) and the Vanguards (his cardinals) have told us. Which is to say most of our previous knowledge comes from myths, legends, and religious texts, similar to Europe during it's Dark Ages and we are discovering old works that are helping to bring about out Renaissance.

                        • I completely agree with you. After reading all the grimmore cards I have Destiny's universe is mysterious, big, and interesting. Like you said, there are so many unanswered questions and as a guardian I feel like out characters are really trying to make sense of everything that's going on and everything they're doing. The way the story and lore is really reminds me of Dark Souls. The only thing is that they really should have the grimmore in game. The audio logs actually sounds like a good idea. Even just the cards themselves, just in game though
