Is Destiny too gear-based?

Before you burn me to a crisp with your flaming, hear me out. While Destiny certainly is not Halo (nor should it be), one thing I've found to be disappointing is how heavily focused the game is on obtaining new gear. To me, it seems like the whole premise of the game has become an endless (and frustrating) grind to acquire a new piece of armor or a new weapon. Yes, new gear is cool and should be something to be excited about. But what I wish I could see more of in Destiny are some of the customization/creativity options Bungie spoiled us with in Halo. Halo's forge, theater, and custom games brought life to the game and allowed us to find countless new ways to play the game and express our creativity. Where are the features in Destiny that allow us to do something similar? I'm not saying there should be a Destiny forge, theater, and custom games per say (because it shouldn't be a Halo re-skin), but some features that give us the opportunities to be creative in how we play the game would be great. I've heard/thought of some great examples. How about a customizable space in the tower for your guardian? Or for your clan? How about the ability to make some fun variations on PvP maps to change the pace a bit? But all I end up doing in the game is repeating strikes/missions, playing the same crucible maps/game types, or attempting the raid in order to acquire new gear. Do you think Destiny is too gear-based?
