Gamer to gamer - Health advice for extended periods of gaming?

So I'm one of those gamers that just can't get enough of playing (especially with Destiny). I can try to avoid it, but when I do get around to gaming, with the amount of free time that I have, I can't help but keep at it for hours (non-stop). While my case might be special (7+ hours of gaming at a time), I know there are others out there who have/have had this type of issue even if not as bad. Anyway, so for anyone savvy in the topic of gaming for extended periods of time, is there any advice you might have to offer to perhaps lessen health risks like vision damage (my main concern) or anything else that can arise from sitting in a room gaming for that long? Like for example, what kind of lighting is good/bad for gaming for long, what kind of tv sets work/don't work for that, maybe what time of day is less risky, etc? While like I said, my main concern is possible vision damage, if anyone wants to add more, go for it.

Feel free to continue contributing ladies and gents. Not only for my need to know but everyone else experiencing issues of this sort looking for a quick reference guide. If I gather enough advice/info, I might turn it into an informative thread. Of course, advice from people on here isn't advice from your doctor and maybe not an expert but it still helps.

  • Well the only things I know about is not to game in the dark. It can strain your eyes pretty bad. Not sure about what type of lighting or how much though. Another thing is to take breaks while gaming. Get up and walk around the house for 5 mins or something like that. Looking at other things that are not a screen will help your eyes not strain as much. Look at pictures on the wall next to you or something along those lines. That's about all I know that could help.
