This theory may be a bit more out there than those. Given how little Destiny gives players to work with in terms of the story, there’s a relative shortage of evidence. Still, the idea is this: You, the player, the Guardians, are the Darkness. I believe this theory was first sparked on the game’s subreddit where one player overheard a Fallen enemy say “The Darkness!” as the player attacked him. After that, more and more was added onto the theory until it snowballed into something halfway plausible. Another commenter expanded on the idea: “Maybe the Traveler has been to their worlds and caused great destruction. Maybe he needed a new army, we think we fight for the light but we are actually making the universe a much darker place. The Speaker has always seemed like a shady guy to me. It’s an interesting point of view.” He goes on to note that while the Guardians are given class names that sound vaguely villainous, Hunter, Warlock, Titan , the enemies are called things like Knights and Wizards which have more heroic connotations. The idea is that the Guardians are raised from the dead by AI Ghosts (not the most wholesome of origins) to do the Traveler’s bidding through the voice of the mysterious Speaker, might actually be doing the omnipotent force’s dirty work by purging the galaxy of life. To expand on the idea, there are almost no humans left when we arrive in the world of Destiny. All we see is the Tower, one last refuge that seems to solely exists to outfit and aid Guardians in their quest to help the Traveler. Perhaps the world isn’t empty because Bungie didn’t want to record more voicework, maybe it’s because literally everyone else is dead other than the Guardians (and those who help them) and they’re being used as a weapon by the Traveler to wipe out all other forms of life in the system, the Fallen, the Vex, the Hive, the Cabal and so on. And some theorize that the “collapse” that wiped out most of mankind could have been initiated by the Traveler itself. destiny story2 If you’re looking for more proof in the lore, here’s an excerpt from one of the game’s famed hidden Grimoire entries, which inexplicably can only be accessed on Bungie.net or through the mobile app. It’s the tale of a Guardian having a rather enlightening experience: “This is the vision I had when I leapt from the Shores of Time and let myself sink: I walked beneath the blossoms. The light came from ahead and the shadows of the flowers were words. They said things but I will not write them here. At the end of the path grew a flower in the shape of a Ghost. I reached out to pluck it and it cut me with a thorn. I bled and the blood was Light. The Ghost said to me: You are a dead thing made by a dead power in the shape of the dead. All you will ever do is kill. You do not belong here. This is a place of life. The Traveler is life, I said. You are a creature of Darkness. You seek to deceive me. But I looked behind me, down the long slope where the blossoms tumbled in the warm wind and the great trees wept sap like blood or wine, and I felt doubt. When my Ghost raised me from the sea there was a thorn-cut in my left hand and it has not healed since.” There are other bits and clues fans are starting to find in the world. The Bible describes Satan as an “angel of light” and a “lightbringer.” Perhaps coincidence, perhaps not given Bungie’s past history in Halo with the “Ark” and the “Flood.” Players are able to easily wield a darkness-infused weapon during a campaign missions. Some special weapons clearly draw on dark energy for their power. You kill legions of enemies so your own power can grow (unlocking new skills, etc). Story and strike missions have you hunting down and killing aliens that are worshipped as gods among their people. All that’s missing is the Speaker saying “Would you kindly eradicate that entire race from this planet?” Perhaps all of this is just circumstantial, and Destiny is more of a straight “light vs. dark” story than all this imagines (as I recall, Grunts used to call Master Chief a “demon” frequently in Halo), but it’s rather fascinating to consider that we, the “heroes” could be on the side of the dark, despite all the constant talk of light. More of the Grimoire is yet to be discovered, and Destiny prides itself in pumping out new content regularly so there will be more to analyze (and over-analyze) soon enough. I’m not sure how much water this theory holds given the limited evidence to work with, but it’s fun to consider all the same. This is why I wish Destiny had a more clearly articulated story. The universe has the potential to be fascinating with an engaging and interesting plot. Hopefully it’s not only the imagination of the fans making Destiny into a tale worth telling, and there’s more to this idea that will be revealed in the future. copyed and pasted from forbes
