Pulse Rifle in PvE

So I happened to acquire a level 20 legendary pulse rifle a couple days ago and I've been using it ever since, while occasionally switching to my level 20 rare auto rifle every so often to test effectiveness. The rare auto rifle absolutely destroys the legendary pulse rifle in DPS. Even when both are upgraded there's just no competition. The pulse rifle bursts are EXTREMELY slow in both time between bursts and time between each individual bullet, but still fast enough for the recoil to cause you to miss nearly every shot after the first. To make matters worse its upgrade causes it to fire an extra bullet if one happens to miss(which in most cases one does) and then that in turn causes you to waste another bullet in the depressingly small clip. Then to add insult to injury, there's almost no significant difference in damage per hit. With how slow the pulse rifle fires and how small the clip is, there's just no way it can ever outclass an auto rifle. Just wondering if anyone else feels that pulse rifles are overall poopy in almost every aspect... Thanks for reading!

I use shadow price with a 257 attack rating and the critical is 295 I just got the red death with 260 attack rating and it has a better impact than the shadow price but the critical is 263 how is this possible?

  • I got a legendary auto rifle from new monarchy which was pretty good but then I found a legendary pulse rifle which I prefer. All auto rifles need is a slight decrease in range, their damage is fine, I think. I've never understood the 4th bullet going off when you miss, surely if your going to miss with 3, you're going to miss with 4. Has this upgrade actually helped anyone out?

My pulse fifle isn't bad (fair and square), but if I miss a burst in pvp I'm pretty screwed. In strike though, is hard to have a weapon suck when it has 14 burst per clip with 546 shots before you run out of ammo. :D

  • I feel the same way but about most of the primary weapons in this game. I got the exotic bounty and chose to get thorn cause some of the hand cannons I used were actually somewhat decent. The rare I had, had an 11 round clip and reloaded pretty fast. So once I went through some of the grindy hard quests for Thorn it only had a 6 round clip and the reload time on it was almost 4 seconds...Compared to my other rare hand cannon that had 11 shots and reloaded in about 1second, and on top of that the rare put ammo directly back into the magazine and does about the same damage per shot with precision headshots depending on what level I am doing and with people it ranges from 400-1000 damage. The Thorn does less DPS than any auto rifle pulse rifle and my rare hand cannon. Yet it was a pain to get and exotic. The ability it gets that deals damage over time when it hits someone only ticks for about 24 damage 4 times, and doesn't stack per shot it just refreshes the dot tick. And in pvp that dot tick does about 6-7 and still needs 3-4 shots to kill someone, if someone has an auto rifle you get out shot everytime. Every weapon that isn't an auto rifle needs buffing from a PVE standpoint.

    • OP is correct. Pulse rifles are extremely under powered. They either need a buff to damage or a decrease to pause between bursts. I have done the same tests as OP and my pulse rifle at 257 attack does kills things significantly slower than my auto rifle at 242, even if I crit with the pulse rifle and only body shoot with the auto rifle. A burst fire weapon should feel powerful, otherwise, why give the balance set back of forced bursting? The pulse rifle in this game feels like a standard video game smg, minus the full auto. Quick, accurate, easy to hip fire, and bullets that don't do damage unless you use a lot of them.

If you don't go for headshots then the pulse rifles are always "weaker" then the auto rifles. It's especially noticeable in PvP, lol btw do pulse rifles have a higher critical damage bonus?
