Hints & Tips

So I thought I'd create a mega thread to trade hits and tips about the game that we pick up as we play. I'm going to categorize them as Tower, PvE and PvP. Tower is for general gameplay, PvE is for anything PvE releated, and PvP for PvP. Tower * The cryptarch gives better odds of getting a better item from engrams at higher levels. So if you can almost level up you might want to save that legendary engram for a little bit. * Items decrypted at the cryptarch convert to the level and class of the player decripting them. It's a good idea to save any blue engrams you get till you hit level 20 on the class you want that engram for. * Green engrams give 10 cryptarch reputation, blue give 150, purple give 200. * Bounties reset at 2:00 AM Pacific, 5:00 AM Eastern every day. However sometimes they glitch and reset around 2:00 PM Pacific, 5:00 PM Eastern as well so you can do double bounties. * Level 21 requires 20 light, Level 22 requires 31, Level 23 requires 43 light, Level 24 requires 54, Level 25 requires 66, Level 26 requires 78, Level 27 requires 88, and Level 28 requires 99 light. (These are best estimates). * If you miss a blue or better engram during a mission/strike it will be waiting for you at the post office in the tower the next time you return. This does not apply to green engrams. * Arc damage weapons seem to be rarer then the other 2 damage types, so if you find a half decent one you might want to hold onto it. PvE * Once you hit level 15 on any character you will unlock all subclasses for all characters. * Once per day you will get mailed a reward for doing a public event and achieving gold tier. * Once you hit level 20 all gear that is rare or better can give light. Rare level 20 gear gives 15 light each. * Patrol Missions can be determined by their icons. The icon that looks like a ghost gives a scan mission. The icon that looks like a pokeball (or radar sweep I guess) gives a scan mission. The pyramid icon gives a collect mission. The square with arrows pointing inwards gives a kill mission. The star inside the square inside a circle icon gives an elite boss kill mission. * Kill the elite boss missions in patrol give 25 reputation gain, all others give 10 reputation. * Public events happen roughly every 30 minutes and they often happen simultaneously across multiple zones, so try to run from one zone to the next after a public event is done in your zone and you might just find another. * Engram drops scale to the level of the player. This means level 1 enemies can drop legendary engrams for players level 20. Higher level enemies have a better change of dropping better engrams. The lockouts on engram colors are level 10 you can get blue engrams and level 20 you can get purple engrams (I believe, at least that was it for me). * Shields have weakness to certain types of damage. Blue shields used by fallen and hive knights are weak to arc damage. Purple shields used by vex minotaurs are weak to void damage. Red/Orange shields used by hive wizards and cabal are weak to solar damage. * Each subclass does a certain type of damage. Voidwalker and Defender do void damage. Sunsinger and Gunslinger do solar damage. Bladedance and Striker do arc damage. * Level 28 enemies with a shield are resistant to all damage types except the damage that their shield is weak against. Make sure you have a weapon with all damage types before doing a level 28 mission, strike, or raid. * All daily and weekly rewards are per character. If you have 2 characters you can get twice the rewards for the daily heroic mission, the daily gold tier public event, the weekly heroic strike, the weekly nightfall strike, and weekly raid dungeon. Bounties are also per character, as well as both vanguard and crucible marks. PvP * On capture, if you have 1 point captured each kill is worth 50 more points, 2 points captured gives 100 more points per kill and 3 points captured gives 200 more points per kill. * On capture, neutralizing an enemy point is worth 25 points per person in the circle. Capturing a point is worth 75 per person in the circle. * On salvage, capturing the relic is worth 100 points per person in the circle, if the relic is successfully captured each team member gains 200 points. Stopping the capture is worth 150 points to the player that stops it. * All points capture faster if you have more people in the circle. * Headshots give an additional 10 points. Grenade kills give an additional 10 points. Melee kills give an additional 10 points. Heavy weapon kills give an additional 15 points. Super kills give an additional 25 points. Killing the player with the most points is worth an additional 50 points. Feel free to correct me as I'm sure I've made some minor mistakes, also add your own below and I will try to keep this list up to date as I can. I have more, I just can't remember it all atm, will try to update as I come up with more to add.
